Like many others, as a child I loved my toys. Especially legos, although my father didn't like my favorite type of toy. My dad didn't like legos because there were messy and I would never actually build the sets. As a result i had to work harder for what I wanted. chores were the best way to obtain my beloved legos. I had to do the hard chores like scrub the floor and wash the windows. In contrast to simply washing the dishes for a hot wheels car. I was fine with this because I knew the harder and longer I worked the greater the reward. This awareness led me to adopting this technique in everyday life. I have discovered that people practice for a reason. Practice is necessary for major and minor tasks alike. It would be ignorant to think that professional athletes don't perfect their skills. Pro athletes work day and night, like an industrious ant to be successful. I may think that being proficient at spelling would be easy. Well that's true if you practice. Winning a big game or a spelling bee are substantial tasks. These tasks are instantly gratifying if you put in hard work. …show more content…
It is not easy to cut, haul, and split trees. I was willing to do this for the potential reward. My Grandfather and I would generally cut down mid sized trees. One day, half way through the summer, we decided to cut down a larger tree. This task would require more time and effort than any old average tree. We still went on with this task. As we were halfway through cutting the behemoth the tree started to fall backwards. This resulted in the saw getting jammed inside the tree. This scary and unwanted incident forced us to pull the tree down with the truck. Through all this time consuming and hard work we finally realized that we had three times as much wood compared to a medium sized

Constructing the Public Perception of Sports

...Constructing the Public Perception of Sports Mass media has become a dominant factor on sports culture in today’s society. “Mass media serve as a dominant hegemonic force in American culture, resulting in the construction and reinforcement of narratives, particularly in professional sports” (Berg & Harthcock). The media can be held responsible for creating the majority of the public’s perception of sports to this day. The heavy dosage of sports communication, in every aspect thinkable, has altered and constructed the influence of sports on millions of people. The sports communication field has become a vast entity and proved to be a profitable market. However, the communicative process regarding sports information has lately cannibalized the true essentials of sports coverage. Sports in general have grown dramatically along with the growth of media. Growth is normally good, but the growth of sports communication in general is so massive that it has become over saturated with inadequate information. The focus of what the media communicates with audiences today is hardly ever statistical information like how many runs Kansas City pitcher, Yordano Ventura, allowed but more on his instigating attitude and why he throws 100mph fuzz balls at guys’ heads so often. After all, Major League Baseball is known as “the show” for a reason. It is easier for the media to narrate exaggerated, unexpected events. These narrations often exclude the true sports coverage essentials. However, they...

Title Ix Paper

...Title IX approaches its 40th anniversary, its policies and impacts on both men’s and women’s sports is still greatly debated and argued. While it is proven fact that it was tremendously successful at providing women far greater opportunities both in sports and outside of sports, the topic of how it is negatively affecting men’s sport is often debated. The five articles that I gathered advocate for Title IX. They express its positive impacts through narrative accounts and personal experiences of well-known female athletes who prospered due to Title IX not just in sports, but in their educational and professional careers. They also disprove the myths commonly associated with Title IX that lack evidence about how it is responsible for negatively affecting men’s sport opportunities and potentially ruining the programs currently in existence. Title IX is generally associated with women’s opportunity in sports to the point where its other positive implications tend to be forgotten. Title IX isn’t just about providing an opportunity for women to participate in sports in high school and at the college level, it is about providing young women the skills needed to achieve greater successes later on in life. Pugmire’s (2013) article quotes Women’s basketball legend Anne Meyers Drysdale saying the following: “According to the Women's Sports Foundation, 80% of women in Fortune 500 companies played sports. It teaches you so much -- confidence, failure, success, courage, how to get along. That's...

Richard Sherman & the American Dream

...emphasis on merit over social status. Although the American community preaches equality for all, its racially-fueled disapproval of Richard Sherman’s “outburst” is a microcosm of Americans’ selective application of the American Dream, the tendency to view those who come from underprivileged neighborhoods as inherently and genetically unequipped with the cognitive tools required for academic and professional success. On January 19th, 2014, the day of the NFL NFC Championshp, the stakes could not have been greater; Richard Sherman was just thirty seconds away from his first Super Bowl. Sherman’s Seattle Seahawks led the San Francisco 49ers 23-17, leaving the 49ers with a final opportunity to win the game. The 49ers ran a play for Michael Crabtree, whom Sherman was guarding, who was making his way into the end zone. Sherman, the NFL’s best cornerback, leaped with Crabtree and tipped the pass towards a teammate in a historic play that ended the 49ers season and, in turn, catapulted both Richard Sherman and the Seattle Seahawks into the history books. Sherman, who has had publicized personal problems with Crabtree in the past, made an emphatic choking motion before sprinting over to a deflated Crabtree and extending his hand in a sarcastic attempt to wish his opponent a good game, to which Crabtree responded to by shoving Sherman away. What happened next...

Hazelwood Vs. Kulmeier

...Back in 1988, a principal removed personal stories about student pregnancies and students of divorced parents. He found these to be offensive and inappropriate for the school newspaper. The students took the school district to court for violating the First Amendment rights of student journalists (Abrams, 1). This court case is known as Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier. The court ruled that, despite the Tinker ruling recognition of strong First Amendment protection, student expression in school-sponsored venues may be subject to greater limitations when those venues have not been established as “designated public forums.” In that context, school officials can censor, if they provide a reasonable educational justification for their actions (Bowen, 1)....

Fullbright Essay

...The Fulbright Essays Two essays are required: The Personal Statement and the Study/Research Proposal. These essays serve very different but complementary purposes. Unless noted, the following information comes straight from the Fulbright Web site. THE PERSONAL STATEMENT (1 Page) The following information is applicable to both Study/Research and ETA applicants: The Personal Statement should be a narrative giving a picture of you as an individual.  Remember, applicants are not interviewed on the national level. The Personal Statement is your opportunity to “talk” about yourself and to tell the committee more about how you came to this point in your life and where you see yourself in the future.  There is no single “right way” to approach the Statement; rather candidates will consider what they think is important for people reviewing the application to know about them. The Statement can deal with your personal history, family background, influences on your intellectual development, the educational and cultural opportunities (or lack of them) to which you have been exposed, and the ways in which these experiences have affected you.  Also, you may include your special interests and abilities, career plans, and life goals, etc. It should not be a recording of facts already listed on the application or an elaboration of your Statement of Grant Purpose.   It is more of an autobiography, and specifically related to you and your aspirations. Adhere to the following format: ...

The Life and Influence of Ignatius Loyola

...WAYLAND BAPTIST UNIVERSITY THE LIFE AND INFLUENCE OF IGNATIUS LOYOLA PAPER PRESENTED TO DR. GARY MITCHELL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR RLGN5354 SCHOOL OF RELIGION BY MARK D. RIGG PLAINVIEW, TX OCTOBER 15, 2015 THE LIFE AND INFLUENCE OF IGNATIUS LOYOLA Introduction This biographical research paper will focus on the life of Ignatius of Loyola. It is the intention of this writer to deal with three major concerns regarding this post-New Testament Christian personality. First concern: to provide some background and personal history. Next, to set forth the contributions of Ignatius and the significant impact he had on the Church in general among his contemporaries, right up to the present day. Finally, the writer will reveal how the life of Ignatius relates to and has personally influenced his own. Background and personal history Iñigo Lopez de Oñaz y Loyola, whom we know as St. Ignatius, was born the youngest of thirteen children in northeastern Spain in 1491. He was raised in a noble Basque family of high Catholic piety but lax in morals. His father had several children by another woman, and his grandfather's lawless behavior led to the top two floors of the Loyola castle being demolished by order of the crown. Iñigo hardly knew his mother, Marina Saenz de Licona. As was the custom of the time, “A few days after his birth Iñigo was handed over to a wet-nurse, Maria de Garin, wife of the blacksmith living in a cottage...
