When entering this new semester I was stronger in some aspects of my academic abilities than others, writing, not being one of those strengths. Due to past high school experiences confidence in my writing abilities dwindled as a result of four years of poor mentoring. Developing a strong passion for the sciences and acquiring an acute fear of any English reading or writing course. My fight with comma confusion and run on sentences stunted my excitement to be enrolled in a purely writing and comprehension focused course.
Within the first few weeks we were introduced to an assignment that focused on defining a word or phrase, I chose to define the word “perfection”. Unfortunately, sending myself into a self-loathing downward spiral due to the unknown degree of difficulty of this word. I struggled with the direction I wanted to go with this paper, then ran into the time engulfing task of trying to capture the ideas that I had accumulated in my head into four pages. The job of capturing these ideas and organizing them into a comprehendible paper was no easy feat, battling between my free writing thoughts and my high school English essay rules, this took me 5 days, 4 long nights, and many calls for help to …show more content…
Following the definition paper our writing became more focused and topic orienteered. Which I have found is, again, not one of my strengths. I struggled with the information and felt as if it was harder to have freedom in my writing when writing about a non-fiction topics. With the research and sourcing I first found it was hard for me to properly incorporate the sources in the text and thought that it broke up or impeded the flow of my paper. The difficulty of not being a strong writer really challenged me to work harder and achieve a well written paper within my allotted time
