Personal Narrative Essay
Title: “For Sale” Everyone knows that phrase: “The grass is always greener on the other side”. But as a child it was a hollow statement for me. Until the day I perceived it as my philosophy of survival. This story is of my purest memories following my relentless battles. Simplistic flashbacks of virtuous kids. Full of laughter and play with nothing to be feared except for the day’s end. All before the moment where the innocence was dissolved away by the acidic misfortunes of life. [a series of sentence fragments] To illustrate, the first setting in this world was in the town called “Ocala”. It was in South-central Florida, a place where nature thrived and creatures of all walks of life roamed. The most business we had there was a prison thirty miles away, and a Wal-Mart 30 miles further down the same road. So one would say it was pretty rural. Just a quaint ole town, where the trees outnumbered the people. My best friend Samantha and I loved the fact that we had mother-nature as our playground. Spending most of our waking moments playing in the open forests, we’d sneak around concocting strategic methods on how to collect lizards and insects, then place them in small decorated cages. Once we obtained our new pets, we would examine and befriend each one, always setting them free later. However, our nights were different, pictures were taken, video games were played and even dress up was included from time to time. Videogames helped enable our mind’s imagination. So many hours were spent on games such as, Fusion Frenzy, and Halo. During the night, darkness would descend upon my room after my step-dad would shut the house down. Pretending to get shut eye in order to turn a console on once more, I would continue another odyssey. I craved not just one life of adventure, but multiple. These scenes were priceless and to this day I look...

Personal Narrative Essay

...English I Introduction In the ninth edition of the St. Martin’s Guide to Writing, in chapter I, Margaret Mead quoted as saying, “Learning to write well takes time and much effort, but it can be done.” I believe I could connect to this quote the best because no matter what you do in life, you have either been taught to do it or learned how to do it on your own. It will take time and much effort to get better but at the end of the day hard work pays off, and you know that it can be done. My name is chris johnson I have served five years in the Army, at Fort Riley, Kansas. This will be my first class attending Barton. I am from Warner Robins, Georgia and will be relocating to Houston, Texas for school at the end of this year. One major thing I love to do is play basketball. I am the oldest of 3 brothers and two sisters. The one thing I like about writing is being able to express myself in my own words. One weakness as a writer for me has to be being able to put all of my ideas and thoughts together the way I want it to be, also using correct terms in my papers. A strength in my writing I would say is being able to develop a good flow of interest within any topic given to me. I hope to improve more as a writer and also retain everything I’ve learned during this...

Personal Sport Narrative Essay

...Khoa Nguyen English 1005 Assignment of Personal Sport Narrative Essay Date: 02/04/2011 The Unforgettable Tournament Last year, after summer vacation, I went to my student soccer team kind of sad. My past captain, the person whom I had really admired, had moved to another team. I did not really feel down, though, because many of my friends were playing with me this year. The greatest thing I had learned about soccer is “Team Spirit”, which I thought my team was full of. Day by day, we played together, joked in the yard, hung out after tired matches. I was so happy to have them as teammates. In my city, there were many rival teams, and they were always trying to pull pranks on each other. Sometimes nothing serious happened, but sometimes something really terrible happened. I remembered the time our team did not have any uniforms because someone has painted them. Luckily, we could have new uniforms, which I thought were better, but we also had to pay a lot of money for them. This season was not just like any season before. We had a new captain, and we were also playing competitive soccer, which was a lot different than our normal soccer. Instead of playing with other local teams, we got to play in big tournaments and against different teams from other cities. The games were also more vivid; I remember the first game, against a team from Hue City, the city next to my city. We called this “Derby Game”....

Personal Narrative Essay: The Last Day Of College

...The last day of college, finally I get to spend my summer break with my two best friends Amanda and Bethany. We have planned to travel to three different countries this year, the most exciting part about it is that all the countries we are visiting are islands. With seas and oceans as clear as a pure diamond, so we get to tan and get some Vitamin D. We have organized to travel to the Maldives, Bora Bora, and Bali. We arranged to meet at our local Starbucks to finalize everything for tomorrow. At about Six Am the next day, I woke up to a beautiful sunny morning. The sun poured through the windows as I got ready. I put on my favorite pink hoodie, got my plane carry-on ready, and headed out of my apartment. Our flight was at Nine Am, we all met...

Personal Narrative Essay: The Story Of My Pregnancy

...This is the story of my pregnancy. The night I found out I was pregnant I got a funny feeling in my stomach, and I wasn’t sure what was going on. I told my mom what was going on, but she was already suspecting I was pregnant and already had a test ready for me to take. I took the test and the results was positive. I cried because I was scared and in shock. I showed my mom and I called my boyfriend Damonte to tell him the news. He was in shock and scared of how his mom was going to react. My mom already agreed to tell his mom. The next day I went to the doctor and she confirmed the test was right. I was indeed pregnant, she said I needed an emergency ultrasound. So, she set that appointment up for the next morning. After my appointment my mom called my boyfriend’s mother to tell her the news because I was scared. I didn’t know how she was going to react. We found out that she already suspected as well and wanted to see me after we got back. So, when we got home my boyfriend’s mother Jendie came and got me from my house. I had previously texted my boyfriend when our moms were on the phone to let him know she wasn’t mad at all and he could relax a little bit. Everyone got their shock of the news and seemed happy that...

Personal Narrative Essay: The Experience Of My Dreams

...I sat straight up in my bed, my back soaked with sweat. This would be the third time this week i've had a nightmare. I ran a hand through my damp hair and slowly turned myself so my feet were touching the hardwood floors. I got up and stretched my arms, trying to loosen my very tight shoulder blades. I rolled my shoulders back and then opened my door to walk down the stairs. The rain was still beating against the rooftop like african drums. It calmed me down as I got to the end of the stairs. I went to the counter and start the coffee maker. While the coffee was brewing and sat on the couch thinking to myself. Wondering why I was having the same dream constantly over the past few weeks. It seemed ever since we moved to this crap town, my dreams have been getting worse and worse. There was something I couldn’t put my finger on. The beeping of the coffee maker brought me back to reality. I got up and pour myself a cup of joe. I added two packets of hot chocolate mix, just the way I like it. I sat on the couch drinking my...

Personal Narrative Essay: Shakespeare's 'Beloved Son'

...Beloved son, As you already know I have been sent off to the evil forest to die; according to our ideologies I am now worthless and filthy, understandably burying me would be considered both unethical and sinful. Call me a coward but the thought of dying here was traumatizing at first, however I have come to realize that the evil forest is not as bad as people claim it is. It is quiet, yes and at night it can get eerie, however that is solely because it has been left completely isolated all these years as our people truly believe that this harmless place is filled with beastly spirits seeking vengeance. The following will probably get you thinking that I am paranoid and that this sickness is truly getting to me, you might as well be right as...

Structure of Personal Narrative

...CLRC Writing Center Structure of a Personal Narrative Essay “Narrative” is a term more commonly known as “story.” Narratives written for college or personal narratives, tell a story, usually to some point, to illustrate some truth or insight. Following are some tools to help you structure your personal narrative, breaking it down into parts. The “Hook” Start your paper with a statement about your story that catches the reader’s attention, for example: a relevant quotation, question, fact, or definition. Introduction Set the Scene Provide the information the reader will need to understand the story: Who are the major characters? When and where is it taking place? Is it a story about something that happened to you, the writer, or is it fiction? Thesis Statement The thesis of a narrative essay plays a slightly different role than that of an argument or expository essay. A narrative thesis can begin the events of the story: “It was sunny and warm out when I started down the path”; offer a moral or lesson learned: “I’ll never hike alone again”; or identify a theme that connects the story to a universal experience: “Journeys bring both joy and hardship.” “Show, Don’t Tell” Good story telling includes details and descriptions that help the reader understand what the writer experienced. Which Essay Is Better: a Narrative or a Descriptive?

...Which Essay is Better: A Narrative or A Descriptive?   Ever read a story and say to yourself, “What’s happening?” Whenever I read a descriptive essay, that’s what I would say. In this essay I would be comparing and contrasting two types of essays, a narrative and descriptive. I have chosen “Are the rich happy?” by Stephen Leacock 1916 and “Sister Flowers” by Maya Angelou, n.d. By writing my essay, I want to give my views on each and decide which I would rather write. Narrative Essay A narrative essay reflects a personal opinion that is based on your own experiences. This helps you bring a reader into your very own mind and shows him/her the topic you’re writing about through your eyes. Telling a story or event the way it happened for you. It also could provide a sort of lesson or moral to be learned from the outcome of the story as well as what the writer did that contributed to it or not. It’s more on a personal level that any one reading could say that happened to them or that they learned from the story by not doing whatever it was that the writer did. In Stephen Leacock’s “Are the Rich Happy?” the author writes about his experiences with his friends, with of modest income. Most of it, all in his opinion, points out the problems or troubles those with an existential amount of funds in their bank accounts. He goes on to give some examples that he encountered several of his friends going through....

Compare & Contrast

...Compare-Contrast Essay The thought of doing an essay for most people can at be quite intimidating because of the need to be technically proficient, following the mandatory expectations outlined and some might find them boring because they feel like it is too restrictive in nature. That is merely just a common misconception though, there are several different styles of essays and the two that are going to be discussed are descriptive and narrative essays. The narrative essay's main purpose is to tell a story using characters and a plot, where perhaps a problem is given, and the events that unfold eventually explain a solution to the problem or issue presented. In contrast the descriptive essay can be very powerful in the fact it is written using the five senses (visual, audible, taste, tactile sensations and smells) this allows the author to bring a scene or object to life in the mind of the reader. While narrative essays are almost like a movie that is played out in the judgment of the reader, the descriptive essay paints a vivid photograph or place the reader can experience and this is why descriptive essays are the superior of the two styles. One of the best qualities that narrative essays are able to offer over descriptive essays is they are structured to appeal to the simplest of mankind's urge to share a good story. There are various forms in which we can find a narrative writing example such as a poem, play, novel and the obvious essay....
