Personal Narrative: My Great Uncle Farzat Sharabi

Most people think of a person with abnormal powers and a cape when asked what a hero is, but there is much more to it than just that. A hero is one who goes to the extreme to benefit others by doing righteous actions. In the United States alone, there are millions of soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for others to attain freedom; freedom that many parts of the world don’t have. Amongst these places is Syria; a country that is going through a civil war to abolish the totalitarian dictatorship. A great amount of lives have been sacrificed in the process, and amongst these heroes was my great uncle Farzat Sharabi. He was a man of love and peace, but this didn’t stop the government from murdering him while he was attempting to help others needing desperate help.
Farzat was in full support of the Syrian revolution because of the oppression the people would face on a day to day basis. As a result of the demonstrations, the government took violent actions against the civilians of Syria. My great uncle was one of the hundreds who lived in Khalidiya. Nothing could be done to stop the artillery and mortar shells, so people would stay home and hope to not be amongst the casualties. As the government was bombarding the people , a mortar hit my great uncle's neighbor’s house. Knowing that the government could be anywhere, he prayed and headed out to help those who were injured. While he was getting ready to leave, his family attempted to persuade him not leave because of the dangers that lurked outside. He refused, explaining that it was his duty to check on the other people who have been injured. He left the house and as he was attempting to look for survivors in the rubble, a shell landed near him and injured his leg. He was still alive, but a government ambulance took him and murdered
