I spent five years of my life serving my country. I always wanted to join the military for as long as I can remember. I honestly believed I would make a career out of it. Fairly early into my enlistment, I realized it would not be my final career choice. I was being told what to do every second of the day, wearing the same uniform every day and physical training before the first flicker of the sunlight in the morning. I also hated being thousands of miles away from my family and friends. This was not what that I wanted to do for the rest of my life. As my Marine Corps enlistment came to an end, I was faced with the decision of which direction to take my life. Ron, my boss, was the type of boss who tasks himself into as many things as possible. This was not necessarily a bad thing, but for us employees it meant being sent out five different directions at once. It was like being pushed on a merry go round as fast as it can possibly go, and then as soon as it stops, trying to put a puzzle together. I had always wanted a job that was mostly manual labor so I would feel accomplished at the end of the day. This job was a considerable amount of physical labor, I went home extremely tired almost every day. The worst part of the job had been working with dry fertilizer. The smell of dry fertilizer was like no smell I had every smelled. It would cling to me and linger in my truck after work. On a hot summer day, I would open my truck door and this horrible, sour fertilizer smell would smack me in the face. The fertilizer smell was probably enough to make anyone consider finding another job, but that was not what got me. Ron was walking around the shop one day, barking orders like he was a prison guard ordering the inmates around. It felt like the time I was making a pizza in the oven and I forgot to let the heat escape before putting my face in front of it. I had just finished grinding some rust off one of our old fertilizer trucks and Ron yelled for me and asked me to take a ride with him. We started driving towards his house, which was not too far from the shop. He told me he needed to get a few things at his house taken care of that he had not been able to get to.
