Personal Narrative: My National Honor Society

National Honor Society is a highly viewed organization with high expectations of academics, character, leadership, and service from each and every one of its members. I feel that my academic career at Woodlynde has been very successful and I have exceeded my own goals and expectations. Freshman year my academics did not meet my school’s standards or my own standards. The main causes of my poor grades and lack of performance freshman year were my illness and my inability to focus in school. However, once I was diagnosed and received help for my ADHD and my Graves’ Disease my performance in school drastically improved. Woodlynde has provided adequate support for me to thrive academically and become a high honor roll student. Through my sophomore year I was able to maintain and improve my grades while balancing three varsity sports. Currently I maintain an A average in my honors curriculum, and have no issues balancing schoolwork with extracurricular activities. I believe that my academic record shows that I am capable of working hard to achieve academic success and meet standards set by myself and my school. …show more content…
In my life there have been numerous amounts of times where I have demonstrated character, whether it was in front of someone I knew or in front of no one at all. In my life I have been told that academic integrity will define your character. In school I have demonstrated my academic integrity by completing my assignments on time, and by not cheating or plagiarizing from the works of my peers. In my high school career, I have never been suspended for any reason. My teachers and peers can attest to the fact that during and outside of class I am respectful and do not cause disturbances or concerns. I maintain my character by keeping myself honest and working to the best of my abilities to show my capabilities academically and

Personal Narrative: My National Honor Society Sponsors

...The thing I always cherished most about service projects is my ability to make a difference and a positive impact on someone’s life through each of them. However, while I am proud of all my service projects, there is one project I will remember forever. The project was brought to my attention by one of my National Honor Society Sponsors, and as soon as I heard about it, I knew I wanted to be a part of it. The project involved fixing up a rental home for a local elderly couple whose rental home had been completely devastated by the previous renters. At first, the elderly couple who owned the home did not believe there was such a thing as a club that provided free service to those in need and were wary of letting a bunch of teenagers into their already wrecked house. However, after a lot of...

Personal Narrative: My School's National Honor Society

...Throughout my high school career, I have always asked myself the question, “What can I do to make an impact?” Out of the millions of people on this earth, I always wondered how I could stand out. My quest to be different came to an end when I noticed how foolish I was being. I never needed to try so hard to stand out, I just needed to be myself. That is why I ran for office as the president of my school’s National Honor Society. A few of my tasks included leading weekly officer meetings, organizing the fall induction, cleaning beaches, and hosting holiday gift. I was inspired to become the president because of the powerful impact this club made on the community. I acquired an ample amount of skills that improved myself as a leader. But most of all, I learned the power of doing good for goodness sake. The joy of the people I helped was all the...

It visualizes the negation of female gender in art. The paper investigates the dichotomy of language, the use of irony and situational metaphors to displace conventional ones; it blends theories with critical evaluation of discourse. The research uses empirical methods in solving hypothetical questions with the use of extensive and relatively unstructured interviews. It examines the interviews of twenty five people independently, these people include: University lecturers, students, administrative and technical staff. The work analyzes concurrently their interview testimonies to search for congruence. Data analysis begins with a detailed microanalysis in which emergent concepts...

...and cohesiveness to an ethnic identity, or encounter stories that transform their view of social injustice and spur further action to reduce inequities. Tourism planning can produce a sense of reconciliation when it brings historically divided groups together. An example is found in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, where a group of white and African American residents are collaborating to develop tourism projects designed around a narrative of reconciliation, while they use the process of tourism planning to work towards racial reconciliation within their community. This case illustrates strategies tourism planners employ and challenges they face when they envision tourism as more than merely a means of economic growth. Keywords: heritage tourism; Mississippi Delta; racial reconciliation; social justice; sustainable community development The advantages of tourism to rural communities are generally painted as economic: developing a tourism industry brings in ‘‘fresh’’ dollars, provides jobs and offers opportunities for local entrepreneurship (National Agricultural Library, 2008; World Travel & Tourism...

...Biography of Nick Joaquín (1917-2004) Posted on September 15, 2010 by Pepe Nicomedes "Nick" Joaquín This is the best biography of Nick that I’ve encountered so far… The 1996 Ramón Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts BIOGRAPHY of Nick Joaquín Resil B. Mojares He was the greatest Filipino writer of his generation. Over six decades and a half, he produced a body of work unmatched in richness and range by any of his contemporaries. Living a life wholly devoted to the craft of conjuring a world through words, he was the writer’s writer. In the passion with which he embraced his country’s manifold being, he was his people’s writer as well. Nick Joaquín was born in the old district of Pacò in Manila, Philippines, on September 15, 1917, the feast day of Saint Nicomedes, a protomartyr of Rome, after whom he took his baptismal name. He was born to a home deeply Catholic, educated, and prosperous. His father, Leocadio Joaquín, was a person of some prominence. Leocadio was a procurador (attorney) in the Court of First Instance of Laguna, where he met and married his first wife, at the time of the Philippine Revolution. He shortly joined the insurrection, had the rank of colonel, and was wounded in action. When the hostilities ceased and the country came under American rule, he built a successful practice in law. Around 1906, after the death of his first wife, he married Salomé Márquez, Nick’s mother. A friend of General Emilio Aguinaldo, Leocadio...

Role of Information Technology

...The History of Information Technology March 2010 Draft version to appear in the Annual Review of Information Science and Technology, Vol. 45, 2011 Thomas Haigh thaigh@computer.org University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Thomas Haigh The History of Information Technology – ARIST Draft 2 In many scholarly fields the new entrant must work carefully to discover a gap in the existing literature. When writing a doctoral dissertation on the novels of Nabokov or the plays of Sophocles, clearing intellectual space for new construction can be as difficult as finding space to erect a new building in central London. A search ensues for an untapped archive, an unrecognized nuance, or a theoretical framework able to demolish a sufficiently large body of existing work. The history of information technology is not such a field. From the viewpoint of historians it is more like Chicago in the mid-nineteenth century (Cronon, 1991). Building space is plentiful. Natural resources are plentiful. Capital, infrastructure, and manpower are not. Boosters argue for its “natural advantages” and promise that one day a mighty settlement will rise there. Speculative development is proceeding rapidly and unevenly. But right now the settlers seem a little eccentric and the humble structures they have erected lack the scale and elegance of those in better developed regions. Development is uneven and streets fail to connect. The native inhabitants have their ideas about how things should be done, which sometimes...

African Americans and Their Service

...African Americans and Their Service Daniel Owsley His 204 Instructor Christina Winn October 11, 2010 African Americans and Their Service African Americans have contributed to the security of this nation by serving this country in spite of the racism they faced. From the Civil War to the present war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the African American soldiers have served and broke down racial barriers in the face of adversity. This is a look at the contribution of service to this country as soldiers from 1865 to present day. During the years of the Civil War, 1861-1865, the African Americans were participating in the war whether they were freemen or slaves. In the southern states many slaves were forced to aid in the war effort by the Confederate army. On the other hand, the Northern states turn away black men at the beginning of the Civil War, but towards the end of the war the Northern army (the union) began accepting Negro soldiers into the army. “For the black soldier in the Union Army, the reason for the war was to free the slaves”, although President Lincolns effort was to save the Union. Emancipation or freedom of the slaves became a major part of the Civil War and it provided additional resources to the Union Army in the way of black soldiers (Simmonds & Carter, 2010). According to Simmonds and Carter (2010), the “Negro Soldiers” fought bravely and won praise in over 200 battles during the Civil War (Para. 4). One of the most recognized or famous black regiment...

GEIGER ELLIS, ED.D., ARTHEA J. S. REED, PH.D., UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA, EMERITUS and UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA, RETIRED A Teacher’s Guide to the Signet Classic Edition of Booker T. Washington’s Up from Slavery 2 INTRODUCTION Booker T. Washington’s commanding presence and oratory deeply moved his contemporaries. His writings continue to influence readers today. Although Washington claimed his autobiography was “a simple, straightforward story, with no attempt at embellishment,” readers for nearly a century have found it richly rewarding. Today, Up From Slavery appeals to a wide audience from early adolescence through adulthood. More important, however, is the inspiration his story of hard work and positive goals gives to all readers. His life is an example providing hope to all. The complexity and contradictions of his life make his autobiography intellectually intriguing for advanced readers. To some he was known as the Sage of Tuskegee or the Black Moses. One of his prominent biographers, Louis R. Harlan, called him the “Wizard of the Tuskegee Machine.” Others acknowledged him to be a complicated person and public figure. Students of American social and political history have come to see that Washington lived a double life. Publicly he appeased the white establishment...
