Ow! My teeth

“I don’t want to get my adult teeth pulled,” I said.
“But you have to. It will be quick,” my mom responded.
“Fine!” I said back.
I had to go to the dentist and get four adult teeth pulled today. I knew it was going to hurt, so I didn't want to go. To overcome this adversity, I used the advanced life skills of relationships and creativity.
Some reasons or causes why I had to get my teeth pulled is I have a small mouth like my dad, because my mouth was small. I don’t have space for new teeth so I got some pulled. One more reason is I had a cavity that that left a hole in my baby tooth. The life skill Relationships help me because I knew my previous dentist, who was my aunt, and I have gotten baby teeth pulled before, but these

Rhetorical modes simply mean the ways in which we can effectively communicate through language. This chapter covers nine common rhetorical modes. As you read about these nine modes, keep in mind that the rhetorical mode a writer chooses depends on his or her purpose for writing. Sometimes writers incorporate a variety of modes in one essay. In covering the nine rhetorical modes, this chapter also emphasizes these as a set of tools that will allow you greater flexibility and effectiveness in communicating with your audience and expressing your ideas. rhetorical modes The ways in which we effectively communicate through language. 1.1 The Purpose of Narrative Writing Narration means the art of storytelling, and the purpose of narrative writing is to tell stories. Any time you tell a story to a friend or family member about an event or incident in your day, you engage in a form of narration. In addition, a narrative can be factual or fictional. A factual story is one that is based on, and tries to be faithful to, actual events as they unfolded in real life. A fictional story is a made-up, or imagined, story; the writer of a fictional story can create characters and events as he or she sees fit. However, the big distinction between factual and fictional narratives is based on a writer’s purpose. The writers of factual stories try to recount...

All these matters are important. Concise treatment of them may be found in THE CENTURY HANDBOOK OF WRITING and THE CENTURY DESK BOOK OF GOOD ENGLISH, both of which manuals are issued by the present publishers. As English

...AS English Language [pic] [pic] [pic] Fiction style models and tasks – 2012/2013 Style Model Workbook Style models are examples of a type of writing used to give you an idea of the features used when adapting a particular style and form. As you will be required to include a fiction and non-fiction annotated style model as part of your coursework folder we have compiled a selection of materials to give you a head start. The two booklets (one fiction, one non-fiction) will contain the type of extracts you should be looking for and the questions that accompany them will help you to annotate the materials appropriately. You will be given some of the extracts to study in class and some to complete as homework tasks. There may be some materials that you haven’t been directed to by your teachers, these will make very good additional preparation and you should look at these in your own time. All the resources, and some additional style models, can be found in the AS Language section of Moodle. AS LANGUAGE COURSEWORK You must keep all work during the production of the coursework in your folder. You will need all drafts and style models for part of your final grade. Criteria • Two pieces of your own writing • Each piece must have a different audience and purpose • You should write with a specific genre in mind • Pieces should be designed with a real publication in mind • Two...

...Illumine by !Super Cat Book One: Rio Book Two: Paris Book Three: Miami A Vampire Chronicles trilogy. Illumine Book One: Rio by supacat Armand has gone into the sun, which means that I have a story to tell. You may blame Lestat. If you have not read the preceding Vampire Chronicles: experto credite. Armand's first words to me were, "I suppose you too are going to write a novel." My name is David Talbot. I was seventy four years old when I became a vampire, but circumstances, Lestat and a psychic accident deposited me into the body of a much younger man. As a result, I am six feet two inches tall and look approximately twenty six years of age. I am also the former Superior General of the Talamasca, though my current situation has reduced that fact to little more than trivia. I have never been able to discover the identity of the man whose body I inhabit. Oddly, however, it is not a mystery that bothers me. Occasionally I look into a mirror and wonder, but that is all. Once, at the beginning of this whole adventure, I told Lestat that I was grateful for the Dark Gift. "It took you two hundred years to learn that you wanted it," I said to him. "I knew the moment I woke out of the stupor. I knew with every breath I took and with every new colour and shape I saw." I was looking with vampire eyes, as he calls it. I was enamoured with the night, and excited by the prospect of eternal life. I am learning that these emotions are not easily sustained. Not after killing a mortal every...

...C h a p t e r 1 Prewriting GETTING STARTED (OR SOUP-CAN LABELS CAN BE FASCINATING) For many writers, getting started is the hardest part. You may have noticed that when it is time to begin a writing assignment, you suddenly develop an enormous desire to straighten your books, water your plants, or sharpen your pencils for the fifth time. If this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader,...

No, that won't do, there's no getting away from the date: I was born in Doctor Narlikar's Nursing Home on August 15th, 1947. And the time? The time matters, too. Well then: at night. Oh, spell it out, spell it out: at the precise instant of India's arrival at independence, I tumbled forth into the world. There were gasps. And, outside the window, fireworks and crowds. A few seconds later, my father broke his big toe; but his accident was a mere trifle when set beside what had befallen me in that benighted moment, because thanks to the occult tyrannies of those blandly saluting clocks I had been mysteriously handcuffed to history, my destinies indissolubly chained to those of my country. You have to get up pretty early to call the States, if you want your privacy and you want to catch anybody awake at home; at home it’ll be sometime the night before. The desert is cool in the mornings too, or cooler, so that you’ll see the occasional soldier getting his PT in before it gets too hot, but he’s usually far enough away that you don’t have to whisper. I would watch the big black beetles fighting with each other in the dirt (they’re way bigger here than they are at home) while waiting for the call to go through. It always takes so long just to connect that I nearly give up before the static stops and the phone starts to ring. The day I was going home was about the worst: I...
