Personal Narrative: Rehab

Rehab. It’s just a simple five letter word, yet the complexity and significance of the word know no boundaries or extent in which it influences those whose extinguished spirit must overcome. The word is scientifically defined as “a course of treatment for drug or alcohol dependence”. But, to me, this so called treatment manifest the pain and discomfort that fester within the damaged psyches of the patient.
I’ve never been one to be exposed to anything dangerous or that can pose a harm to me; this was directly due to the buffer between me and the “real’ world, better known as my parents. However, now that I’m planning on leaving this sheltered nest and off to the destination that is college I must begrudgingly face what the world has to offer. My first personal divulgence of this had occurred when I got my first part-time job at a Home Depot.
When doing such a simple job such as stock and inventory, I had hoped my lackluster social skills wouldn’t arise and make the workplace awkward for all staff and customers. This …show more content…
This man who I can only describe as a pinnacle of pride and hard work had been reduced to a sniveling child who couldn’t stand upright. When supervisors had pulled him to the side and asked for what’s wrong the answer had only confirmed our suspicions. The bloodshot eyes. The involuntary shaking. The inability to focus and do his job. The catalyst of such actions was due to the consequences that came with harsh rehabilitation. Throughout most of his life, Kyle had to face such problems such as anxiety and had mistakenly taken drugs such as heroin as an escape. However, he had built himself back up. He had gone clean for many months, he had gotten his own car and even two jobs. But these virtues were slowing slipping through his grasp like free flowing air, and no matter how much he tried the truth of the matter is, they’ll slowing fade just like all good things

Britney

...to an American father, and Scottish mother. She later moved (1999) to London, where she studied economics and political science. She has also lived in Montreal, Berlin. She has an online-based blog, where she uploads a few essays and inputs – inputs that are all backed up by her academic background. Despite the online essays, her first official published book was in 2009. “I Killed Britney Spears” is a (non-fiction) personal essay, with a first person narrator which makes the essay identifiable. Edelstein clearly wrote this essay to highlight a few consequences and flaws in the relationship between fan and idol. Most of these flaws are shown in the age 13-18. These years are filled with the confusion that follows the transition from child to adult. Edelstein might have thought about this particular transition and thereby, intending the text to be read by these confused adolescents. The text “I Killed Britney Spears” was written in 2008, a year of great turmoil for the star Britney Spears. She was fighting over the custody of her children, she had been in rehab and just cut off her hair. All these events generated a lot of public attention. Mostly negative attention. Many of the “Spears” fans (including Edelstein herself) who identified themselves with her, were emotionally hit by Britney’s instability. The intention of Edelstein is spread across a few points. First, Edelstein intends to raise awareness towards the ignorance of “feeding the show business machine”. Towards the...

Leadership

...Advanced Leadership Skills I grew up in a conservative family. My father has served in the Philippine military and the Philippine government most of his life, and my mother was a dedicated nurse midwife and professor at a university hospital. Serving and caring for people has become second nature to my family. My father was strict and a disciplinarian; he did not allow my family to be out of the house after 6:00 p.m. He believed that it was important to have every member of the family home for dinner. It was from him that I learned the value of self-discipline, respect, and the importance of good education. Meanwhile, my mother was the go-to person for most of our relatives and family friends. Our home was open to anyone who was in need. It was from her that I learned to be available to the people I cared about. When asked about my leadership values, I always knew that they are strong reflections of my parents’ beliefs and practices. Self-reflection is essential in knowing who I am. My Advanced Leadership course from New York University has taught me that a leader is not born to have a specific characteristic or trait to be great; likewise, a unique leader has leadership gifts within him or her. To use this leadership gift to inspire and motivate others, George, Sims, McLean, and Mayer (2007) stated that I must come to understand who I am and my life stories and experiences in order to develop self-awareness. I must continue to explore and develop my values and principles...

Not in the post-modern era were living in today; they’re quite simply just another part of society, at least in my opinion. Richard Dyer documented that ‘stars articulate what it is to be human in contemporary society’ and this seems so in the case of fan-culture and star worship my peer group are subconsciously members off. Rimmel’s young, experimental female 16-24 year old target market is me.  Their marketing strategies have been effective in that I have bought and continue to buy their make-up products because they are up-to-the-minute, cheap and accessible. Why had she been one of only three students with wheelchairs at the entire university? “The other two wheelchair riders were Australian students,” she says today. “I asked myself the question—where are the other people with disabilities, and why aren’t more people with disabilities able to have this type of study experience?” Her...

Case Study-Promiscuity

...LIB-495-GS001 Abstract Paternal authority, according to the existing literature, is of upmost importance to the healthy psychosexual development of a child. Women who were raised with a lack of paternal authority can often face significant setbacks when dealing with everyday life issues. Promiscuity as a self-destructive behavior has substantial consequences often resulting in mental and physical suffering. This qualitative single case study was designed to explore the correlation of promiscuity- as a self-destructive behavior with women who were raised in single-mother households where there was a lack of paternal authority. A single intrinsic case study was used to explore one woman’s battle with promiscuity. The data obtained formed a narrative generated by the triangulation of psychoanalytical therapy sessions, a client intake form and the woman’s journal. A case analysis was performed and later reviewed by an attending mental health clinician. The results indicated the woman manifests the self-destructive behavior of promiscuity at the expense of poor self-esteem which directly correlates with a lack of paternal authority. The disruption of the woman’s psychosexual development in childhood negatively altered her self-image. The woman uses transference in her intimate relationships as a desperate attempt to gain control of her life. Further research and use of psychometric testing with a large number of women suffering with promiscuity as a self-destructive behavior in correlation...

In the end, we are our choices. —Jeff Bezos, commencement speech at Princeton University, May 30, 2010 Prologue In the early 1970s, an industrious advertising executive named Julie Ray became fascinated with an unconventional public-school program for gifted children in Houston, Texas. Her son was among the first students enrolled in what would later be called the Vanguard program, which stoked creativity and independence in its students and nurtured expansive, outside-the-box thinking. Ray grew so enamored with the curriculum and the community of enthusiastic teachers and parents that she set out to research similar schools around the state with an eye toward writing a book about...
