The school day ended. I rushed down to the atrium as fast as possible. When I reached the atrium I meet up with the rest of my team and we walked into the cafeteria for the annual Rube Goldberg competition. This year the challenge was to turn the page of a book. When we found a spot, the other three members of my team went out to get the parts for our Rube Goldberg machine, called the R. G. tracks, so we could put it back together because it had to be transported to the school. As I’m waiting, my teacher from third grade who runs the competition comes over and asks me if we could compete at middle school level due to the fact that there was only one middle school team. After it fell, the worst possible thing happened. The books fell the wrong direction because the table vibrated too much. The books going the wrong way didn’t allow the machine to finish which lost us some points. As this happened, I thought back some weeks ago when we first got together to come up with our solution for flipping the book’s page. At first, we had a ton of preposterous ideas. After this, the group and I, expect Joe, had to go home. The next time we came to Joe’s house to work. Joe had an idea that seemed to work. He had used my remote control geotrax train to turn the page. It did this by having a water bottle connected to the remote by sting dropped, causing the remote to be pulled down and the train using another string and a clip to pull over the book page. We all thought this was the perfect idea. The machine had to have so many “steps” or transfers of energy. For example, a ball rolling down something and knocking a book is one “step.” But if the book hits another book it does not count as another “step” because a “step” cannot be the same thing repeated.
