Personal Narrative: What I Learned In My Freshman Class

In the beginning of this year I thought I was prepared for the freshman classes that I had heard about. Walking into Newton North on the first day of school I thought that everyone would stay in their own friend groups, my best friend would stay my best friend, and nothing would change. I was wrong. Throughout this year I think I changed a lot and strayed from who I thought I was going to be. I was confident in the beginning of the year, but not just with myself but with my friend group and my classes. Though my confidence with my new friend group has stayed the same I've began to question myself and who I was and am. I compare myself to others and I tried to be like everyone else. I had a certain group of friends in the beginning of the semester and I believed I’d be friends with them throughout the entire year. My group changed quickly, as all of my old best friends had ditched me. I soon understood that my true friends were the ones that stayed. Soon after the first term began I recognized that high school was actually a lot different than middle school. During the year I have struggled with my grades. My grades weren’t even bad at all, but I put so much effort into trying to maintain all A’s that the stress really got to me. In the song Try by Colbie Caillat talks about how you don’t have to try so hard to be anyone else. It’s saying that you don’t need to wear makeup, special clothes, or do anything that isn’t who you are. I think this song really goes well with how my year went because a lot of the time during the year I acted in certain ways where I wasn’t myself. I tried to be like the other girls in my grade and I pushed myself really hard to try and get there. Later on I grasped the fact that I don’t need to try to be like anyone else. ...Narrative of Adolescence Years Abstract This paper is a narrative of my adolescent years from twelve to eighteen. I label these years of awkwardness and pain off a hit show from the early nineties called, “The Growing Pains.” Similar to the characters in the show I struggled creating a personal identity and had difficulty blending in with societal norms. This common reaction reflects James King and David O’Brien’s (2002: 42) characterization of the dichotomy teachers often perceive between school and nonschool literacy activities (although they are not referring to Facebook specifically): “From teachers’ perspectives, all of these presumably pleasurable experiences with multimedia detract from students’ engagement with their real work. Within the classroom economy technology work is time off task; it is classified as a sort of leisure recreational activity.” This dichotomy can be broken down, though; students’ enthusiasm for and immersion in these nonacademic literacies can be used to complement their learning of critical inquiry and traditional academic concepts like rhetorical analysis. Although they read these texts daily, they are often unaware of the sophisticated rhetorical analysis they employ while browsing others’ profiles (or as they decide what to add to or delete from their own page).
