Personal Refection Paper
At this point after studying the text book definition of critical thinking. If I have to categorize myself as a beginning thinker. Where, unlike a challenged thinker I don’t necessarily and major flaws in my thought process I am indeed taking time and effort to improve my critical thinking skills. In my personal opinion is not only disipline and rational but also it’s clear concise and in every instance is backed with evidence. It also needs to be simplistic enough for anyone to participate in it, yet regimented and rational enough to promote intellectual growth. For where would the world of fine art be without thinker such as Plato and Socrates? Where would today’s perception of western religion be without critical thinkers such as Aquines? The most important thing I’ve come to learn about critical thinking is that without it we would have been robbed of this world’s greatest philosophers. Second by extension historically individual critical thinkers always have had a certain amount influence when it comes to social norms. Some of the more popular ones have their own principles that have been applied to movement and religions. Individuals like Lenin and Karl Marx heavily inspired the communist movement, while the Nazi party was heavily inspired by the works of Friedrich Nietzsche. For all we know the events of World War II could have played out completely different if these philosophers (also known as critical thinkers) were never born?! Who’s to say the communist party would not have bothered to oppose Hitler if it wasn’t for their opposing philosophical stances. As I mention earlier these critical thinkers have also in many cases defined religion. An example, my personal favorite, Jesus Christ. While many questioned his exist because of what many perceive as lack of historical evidence, he is by many accredited as the father of ethical altruism. Ethical altruism is the ethical belief of living your life define by dedicating yourself for the greater good for the betterment of mankind even at the cost oneself. Without critical thinking this philosophical stance that inspire individuals such as peace advocates and Nobel peace prize winners such as Mother Theresa and Mahatma Gandhi would not exist. While it is currently debated that religious belief has hinders society at whole, who is to say that without the practice of altruism that society would have even advance to this point? As the saying goes living in a world that live along the guide lines of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth we are all left blind and toothless. After taking this class I have come to the realization that my critical thinking skills have improve.

Personal Reflection

...Personal reflections are characterized as learning through experience in gaining new insights and changed perception of self and practices. Reflection can be a difficult experience without the support and guidance of an expert (Johns, 2004). This personal reflection presents an exciting opportunity for me to consider how successful my placement in the intermediate care has been in terms of my own personal learning. By reflecting on the positive aspects of the placement, I will be able to make sense of my personal learning and apply what I have learnt into future careers. At the beginning of my placement I knew very little about intermediate care or services it provided regarding alternatives to hospital care for elderly patients. In preparation for my placement, I visited a local health center and spoke to a therapist who agreed to send me information about intermediate care service. I familiarized myself with the services that are offered by intermediate care, for instance in house provisions and therapist group run services. This helped to alleviate some of my anxiety about the placement that I experienced during my first week, reflecting on my experiences has helped. During my placement I was allocated a mentor who was a knowledgeable and professional nurse. I learnt so much from my mentor, especially what it takes to be a crucial member of a rapid response team of the intermediate care service. Shadowing the mentor gave me the opportunity to observe all the rapid...

...Date: 27th October, 2014 Title: Morrisons breaks pledge on low prices Link: http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/business/Retail_and_leisure/article1475669.ece The ethical issue was related to credibility of a company. It was about Morrisons the supermarket increased prices of some products marked with “I’m cheaper” sign after promising to cut prices permanently on over 1000 goods six months ago. The supermarket claimed the rise in prices was only a reflection of “commodity inflation” and still “lower than they would have been” without the “I’m Cheaper”cuts. No doubt by increasing the price of goods, the supermarket could compensate the losses from the inflation in supply costs. This do help to maintain profitability of the supermarket and strengthen the confidence of its investors. Also, even though the prices had been raised, they were still lower than the general prices of these goods. The promise of enduring price cut was kept. It was a win-win situation in the eyes of Morrisons. One of the problems arose in this issue was the reputation of Morrisons towards the customers was deeply affected. Although action of increasing the prices due to inflation was justifiable, Morrisons still broke part of its vow of long-lasting price cut. A credibility gap between Morrisons and customers might have been develop as a result. Moreover, the intention of the supermarket was to maintain its profitability while the issue of the news had leaded to a fall in its share price of 0.46...

...Invidious comparison and vicarious traumatization are two things that most people will experience in their lifetime. I know for I personally have experienced both during my 28 years of life. Invidious comparison and vicarious traumatization can both be damaging to yourself and other people involved. That is why I'd like to take the time to explain a few important topics on invidious comparison and vicarious traumatization, such as; how to stop invidious comparison, identify strategies that I currently use to avoid vicarious traumatization in my personal life, how those strategies will help me avoid vicarious traumatization as a human service worker and what strategies I could develop to avoid it as well. I myself have compared myself to others at such a level that it did damage to my own self-esteem. I had a baby at a young age, I gained a lot of weight and my self-esteem instantly dropped. Always comparing myself to other moms who had babies. I would be so hard on myself about why I didn't look like them and why it was taking me so long to drop the baby weight. It even got to the point where I stopped eating because I thought that was the answer to losing weight and looking like these other moms that had babies just like I did. I was so busy focusing on my weakness and faults that I didn't stop to embrace my strengths and to embrace the difference of those other moms. Instead of allowing those other moms to inspire me, it brought me down because of envy and jealousy. ...

...situation where a person is involved in a serious injury or threat to their lives. Every person suffers at some point in their life through problems, injuries, or deaths of loved ones or suffer through traumatic events. We as human services providers will listen to many traumatic events, problems, and suffering stories of the clients that help. Some stories may be worse than others and harder to listen too. Vicarious trauma is the process in which the professional has gone through a shift on the way they see themselves, others and the world do to listening too or getting attached to the client traumatic experience (Kress, 2004). Vicarious Trauma causes changes in the person’s identity, memory, and belief system, which causes change in their personal life, relationships, and the way they view the world and others. When a person listens to the details of the client’s traumatic experience, they become witnesses to the traumatic realities, they picture and they play out the events in their mind, which leads to a transformation within the psychological functioning of counselors (Kress, 2004). Even those that work in other careers, like police officers, emergency medical workers, and firefighters go through vicarious traumas. I as a human being has not gone through a vicarious trauma, and I don’t know of many people that have gone through it. Even though I have not gone through it or I don’t know any person, it doesn’t mean that I will never go through it and more when I start working...

...Personal Reflection: The Task Interview Task interviews are a significant experience for LCA students (particularly in session one) and provide an excellent opportunity for personal reflection. A reflective paragraph based on the task experience could be used as one of the foci required for the personal statement at the end of year one. The resource attached may be useful in facilitating this process with students. Reflection on the Task Interview Experience [pic] Before the task interview: How did you feel before the task interview? What were your hopes? What preparation had you done? During the experience How did you feel during the interview? What questions were you asked? How did you feel you got on with the examiner? Was the interview as you thought it would be? ...Personal Reflection Christopher Davis CSS101_4 January 21, 2015 Karin Detweiler Personal Reflection In this course I learned that having commitment brings out our true potential because it motivates us to give our best, overcome obstacles, stand up even after failures, and that my soft skills are more valuable than I realized. Though I have been through this course once before at a different college, when I earned my Associate’s Degree we didn’t do a lot of research because it was a technology school. I was surprised by how much prospective employers look at your soft skills over your knowledge. What surprised me the most was the paragraph that we had to copy and paste when making our APA template. This statement really made me think, (Many students grumble and moan when their instructor assigns them to complete a group project. Some students may worry that they will have to do the whole assignment on their own, if their group members do not pull their weight. Other students insist that they work better on their own. However, students would be wise to note that working in group projects helps them develop and refine their soft skills. Soft skills are “collection of personal, positive attributes and competencies that enhance your relationships, job performance, and value to the market” (Smith, 2011). And, they are becoming increasingly more important...

...Personal Reflection Paper Monique Clement HUM 111 06/24/2012 Arlene Browden What is critical thinking? Critical thinking is the identification and evaluation of evidence to guide decision making. A critical thinker used broad in depth analysis of evidence to make decision and communicate his or her beliefs clearly and accurately. You can say that it is described as “thinking about thinking.” It has also been described in more detail as: “the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, apply, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action" (Scriven, M., and Paul, R.W 1987). The three most significant things that I have learned about critical thinking during this class are the stages theory. The stages are unreflective thinker, challenged thinker, beginning thinker, practicing thinker, advanced thinker and final the master thinker. The three that I am going to focus on are unreflective thinker, beginning thinker and the master thinker. The unreflective thinker are largely unaware of the determining role that thinking is playing in their lives and of the many ways that problems in thinking are causing problems in their live. Prejudices and misconception often undermine the thoughts of an unreflective thinker. Then there is the beginning thinker which I am very familiar with because I was one...

...Personal Reflection HUM/114 Personal Reflection In this paper I will discuss what critical thinking is and how my personal critical thinking skills have developed and possibly changed. Before starting the Critical and Creative Thinking course, I was unaware of the differences between thinking and critical thinking. The first assignment for the class was the “What Kind of Thinker Are You?” From this, I learned the differences between thinking and critical thinking, the strategies for developing critical thinking, and the different stages of thinking. What is Critical Thinking? Critical thinking is different from just thinking in general.  Thinking is considered daydreaming, and is distorted, or uniformed.  However, critical thinking is more controlled, is improved thinking, and is more of a problem solver. One would be critically thinking when he or she breaks each thought down into analyzing, and assessing each task. A critical thinker will direct their thinking with details and organization. “It is the ability to apply reasoning and logic to new or unfamiliar ideas, opinions, and situations. Thinking critically involves seeing things in an open-minded way and examining an idea or concept from as many angles as possible. This important skill allows one to look past their own views of the world and to better understand the opinions of others” (Wise Geek.org, 2013, para 1). What I have Significantly Learned I have learned many things about critical thinking; however...

...Personal Reflection Paper BSHS/345 November 10, 2014 Personal Reflection Paper Invidious comparison and vicarious traumatization are two very real concepts in life. However, when working in the human service field, both concepts must be controlled to avoid negative outcomes. This paper will describe two concepts and how each has played a part in my life. The first concept of discussion is invidious comparison. The second topic of discussion will focus on vicarious traumatization. Aside from how both concepts have affected me personally, I will examine strategies that can help me avoid vicarious traumatization as a human service worker. The first concept of discussion is invidious comparison. According to Merriam-Webster (2014), invidious comparison is defined as “tending to cause discontent, animosity or envy”. In other words, invidious comparison is when a person compares themselves to others by class, religion, sex, and race. While this concept occurs to everyone, and seems to be a normal part of human nature, negative ramifications such as poor self-esteem, depression, and stress may result if not directed in the correct manner. The concept of invidious comparison is one I can relate to well. For many years, I used to compare myself to those who had more money that I did. While I am ashamed to admit how shallow I was, this comparison brought me into a state of depression. It was during my depressed mode that I realized that I needed to take control of...

...Personal Reflection Denise Johnson Professor Lana Sampson Philosophy 100-Psychology of Adjustment 3 November 2014 The majority of people that I come in contact with over time has been able to balance home, work and school. I chose these three areas due to my personal reflection on where I started in life and will end up in the future. I believe that my beginning was very hard especially losing my father at age 4, then having to live with different people so that I would not be put in a foster home. I will say that I have been blessed knowing that even though things were not always good, I realize my life was not in my control though a part of something bigger than myself. Psychology is defined as an academic and applied discipline that involves the scientific study of mental functions and behaviors. Psychology adjustment is the concept of positive mental health which refers to an individual's state of mind and overall well-being. After I went from place to place, I started to really be more independent in taking care of myself. I did not want anyone’s help, just allow me to do everything on my own. I really looked at life as you have a long time to live on this earth so take your time. I believe that when really go through situations, it just makes you stronger for worse issues in life. Now, I have learned a lot about myself and how I can handle circumstances as they happen. I have also learned how to prioritize home, work, school, and recreation. One of the things that...

...Personal Reflection Bryant Gripp HUM/114 April 17, 2014 Deborah Shrum Personal Reflection What is critical thinking? For me, critical thinking is not just one thing. Critical thinking is finding the logical solution or answer. Clear rational thought and the ability to engage in reflective and independent thought. Not everything that you hear or see is what it seems. Sometimes there are hidden meanings, nonfactual statements that you must determine if valid or not. Questioning the statement or researching a topic may bring truthful facts to your attention. Critical thinking takes everything you know and feel and throws it away. Now you must look at everything with an open mind and soul. The idea is not something that is perfect, evaluating the idea from every possible point is necessary. Strip yourself of everything that you know and be curious about everything. What are the most significant things that you learned about critical thinking during this course? The most significant thing that I learned from this course is that critical thinking involves learning. Instead of taking things for granted you need to ask questions and investigate things that you do not know about. When someone is speaking or writing pay attention to what they are trying to say. If you do not get it then ask questions. Every idea or statement must be backed up with facts, not just someone's opinion. How has your critical thinking changed since starting this course? To...

...Mgt 456 Professor Hartley September 10, 2012 Personal Reflection Culture plays a big role in everyday conflict. Every type of culture has its own unique way of approaching a conflict and responding to it with different actions. The different beliefs and views impact our feelings and behaviors regarding conflict and conflict resolution. Looking more in-depth of conflict resolution, below each culture lays a web graph of gender, religious beliefs, home and/or national cultural influences. Resulting from the diverse cultural differences influences dissimilar approaches to resolving conflict. Coming from a strict Armenian heritage, our culture is considered to mainly having the “blow up conflict” approach. According to Hocker Wilmont, the blow up conflict approach is stated as “hostility and uncooperativeness which leads to heated emotional exchange”. Unfortunately, the male gender of most families makes the decisions of any type of conflicts. Usually in the case of conflict in our culture then results to the “silent-treatment conflict” approach where there is silence between the relationships in conflict. This specifically applies to my background in my families approaches to conflict management. I was born into a family where conflicts existed every day. Growing up I thought to myself why are my elders yelling at each other and informing me to behave and not talk back to them when they were the ones going “wild” in front of me. As I got older I realized there...

...Running head: PERSONAL REFLECTION Reflection of my Time Amy Wofford CSS101-24 September 18, 2014 Dr. Nash Returning to school after graduating high school over a decade earlier, is scary. Needless to say I was anxious, and ready to quit before I even started. Carver (n.d.) once said “Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom” I used that quote as motivation. The continuing of my education was always something that was there but in the back of my mind. Being at a crossroads in my life, there were things that we do in our daily lives were becoming harder to do. Paying bills and being able to keep food on the table, were becoming so overwhelming. As I sat down one day and thought about how I get myself out of the situation I was in, I decided to make that call. By the end of the day I was enrolled in Independence University and was about to earn my associates in Business Management and Accounting As I sit here and reflect on the last 4 weeks of my Psychology of Motivation class, I realize I should have done this before. I was expecting this transition to be hard. I am a single mom of 4 kids, three of them who are attending school themselves. I was so happy to find out that being an online learner is really working in my favor. I don’t even have to leave my house to attend my classes. I have time to learn at my own pace and still...

...Nursing Expertise Reflection Paper Communication is essential for survival. As humans we learn to communicate the moment we are born. Babies rely on their caretakers to interpret their non -verbal communication to provide them with comfort, food, and relief from pain. According to Merriam- Webster.com (2013), communication is a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior. Communication is not only reserved for humans but animals, plants, insects, and just about every living thing on planet Earth has some form of communication. In person to person interactions it is not enough to communicate with words. We must know how to effectively communicate. Without this you may as well not communicated at all. Poor communication can lead to many problems and stress that could have been prevented. Effective communication can improve personal and professional relationships. It can help resolve differences and create a caring flourishing environment. Just as poor communication can cause conflict, resentment, and even damage personal and professional relationships. Developing effective communication skills take time and a conscious effort to listen, slow down, and manage stress in the moment. Self-awareness of personal feelings and emotions is also essential in developing these skills. The ability to improve communication skills allows for positive interactions with peers, loved ones, and as...
