Is that my Responsibility?
Ron Haskins writing for the bookings institute defines personal responsibility as the willingness to both accept the importance of standards that society establishes for individual behavior and to make strenuous personal efforts to live by those standards.

Personal responsibility is my personal choice to do what I know to be right and conduct myself in accordance with my personal set of moral values. These values are formed from the perimeters society has established and what I have learned throughout my life. The process of learning to be accountable for our action is a lifelong process. Every day we take on new responsibilities and learning how to take responsibility continues throughout our lives.
I have learned many ways to accept and hide from responsibilities. It has taken me a lifetime to learn what I have learned so far. This learning process did not end when I finished high school, when I finished basic training in the Army, when I retired from the Army, and it is not over now. It is a lifelong lesson that I will strive to pass on to my children through the example I set and the education I provide for them.
