I recently decided to back to college because I need to relearn basic skills, to be more socialize, and predominately, increase chances of getting a job. First, the reason why I need to relearn the basic skills—such as English, Math, and Reading—is that that will help me to progress in life. That being said, it will help me to read better and speak more fluently sound coming out from English and Reading and as for math, it will help me think more logically when calculating and solving numbers in certain scenarios. ...to greet me with a handshake as she introduced herself to me as Paneora Bakutis. As with most conversations, we began our interview with small talk. I complimented her on how nicely decorated the office was, as she went to prepare what looked like materials for our interview. We began our interview and I listened intently while Ms. Bakutis told me of all the wonderful opportunities Morris Graduate College has to offer. We discussed which program may work best for me, location, and financial aid. As we were closing out the interview Ms Bakutis opened a black folder shaped like an elegant envelope and pulled out papers that needed to be returned as soon as possible. She then alerted me that classes would begin on December 2nd, 2013, so it would be beneficial to me to get started as soon as possible. The final thing Ms. Bakutis told me as we wrapped up our meeting is that I would need to submit a personal statement along with two letters of recommendation. Whoa!!!!! At that moment everything stopped. I need to write a personal statement? Wow!!! I’ve never written a personal statement. Am I really ready for this? These were just some of the thoughts running through my mind. I went into panic mode as my mind started racing. Aaaww man, I have to write a paper to get into the Master’s Program? Shoot!! What would I write about? Will this really determine whether the school will accept me or not? I haven’t written a paper since I was in the BSW program at Governors State University...

...been caught.” This quote leads me to believe that this is a statement of personal opinion, this would not work on Project #2.   * How does John Polk characterize fraternity life? (1962) John Polk comments, "Yeah, lots of parties, booze, honking horns, It's exactly what you would expect." He characterizes his fraternity as a stereotypical group of college men who drink a substantial amount of alcohol and party with women. The overall idea is a vague generality. The way john Polk talks about his fraternity describes the way his fraternity is, but not all those in fraternities drink or write papers, it is all based off of choices made by an individual. This wouldn't very well work for project #2.   * What does John Polk say he likes in his sex life? (1962) “Yeah, I like to give myself a treat”, is the response John Polk gave to Ashbe, after she mentions seeing John with a “red card”, hinting at the fact that there was a whore house close by, and she wanted to know how often he went there. This is a matter of John Polk’s sexual preference, not an arguable claim, this would not work for Project #2.   * Why doesn’t John Polk think it’s right not to leave a tip? (1963) Even though Polk, after feeling guilty, offered Hilda a quarter, his excuse for not tipping was, “I figured drinks were expensive, I just didn’t”. So, if a product is expensive, a customer should not tip? This is more of a statement of personal opinion and a vague generality. This is not a valid argument...

Personal Responsibility

...Personal Responsibility is linked to College Success Gen/200 July 1, 2013 Jeremy NeVille Personal Responsibility is linked to College Success As George Washington Carver said, “Ninety-nine percent of all failures come from people who have a habit of making excuses.” (LeadershipNow, n.d.). Although, people are naturally unable to take responsibility, college success is attainable when an individual accepted personal responsibility. With an early behavioral intervention set at a young age, academic success is easily adaptable and reachable. Continuing higher education such as attending college is an individual’s personal responsibility of choice. Higher Education offers a place for learning and practicing skills such as; setting goals, manage time, resolve conflicts, and learn new skills. Recognizing our potential can advance our ability to gain lifetime-acquired skill for success in college. Accepting personal responsibility is to own up to his or her mistakes. When an individual accepted personal responsibility of his or her actions, he or she takes full control of all the decision-making. Pointing fingers or making excuses for any circumstances are not a trait of an individual who takes personal responsibilities for his or her life. Acknowledging your own mistakes is an admirable trait of a responsible individual. In every family household there are different sets of values and approach on teaching their children personal responsibilities. These children are taught...

Building an Ethical Organization

...HSM 230: Ethical Issues in Human Services Management Week 9: Final Project: Building an Ethical Organization part 2 Title: Job Placement Program By Penelope Foretich August 20, 2015 Introduction Statement Here in the city of Commerce, TX, there is a rising problem that has to deal with the economic crisis of the town. The town has approximately 9,000 residents in it, but only a handful of employment opportunities for these residents to find work. The highest employer in town is the Texas A and M University with an average of 900 employees. However, once school is out, their job opportunities for the town drop drastically. Many employers lose their staff, since most are from the University. As a result, it has possibly added to the cause of the poverty rate increase in the town. As a Human Service Advocate and a resident of the town itself, I propose a Job Placement program to bring the economy of the town back up. The people of Commerce need a way to revive the town and bring the economy of their residents back up and out of poverty. I believe creating a job placement program for the residents could help in solving the issue of the drop rate in available jobs in Commerce. This is a growing problem and there are many that need help with finding jobs. What will also help is providing the right job training for those part of the program. Description of the Organization The type of organization that I will be to be Director of is a non-profit Job placement program through...

Why I Want to Get an Mba

...Personal Statement March 6, 2013 Marshall Islands Scholarship Grant and Loan Board Dear Board of Directors, I do believe with all my heart and soul that education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the course of our young nation to a better and brighter future. It is quite a disappointment to witness that more Marshallese students have stopped dreaming big. As I am writing this statement I’m witnessing Marshallese students graduating from American High Schools with close to zero interest of dreaming on going to college and getting a Bachelor, a Master degree, or even a Doctorate degree. I believe dreaming big and finishing college are an irreplaceable part of our lives, and the role that good education plays on the personal growth of our young citizens and the future growth of our small country, is a remarkable one. I am writing to you to let you know that I am one of those Marshallese out there who still has a burning desire after graduating four-year college to continue on and earn a Master degree in Business Administration. I have been accepted to Keller Graduate School of Management at DeVry University. I am confident that I will make it, but I will need the full financial support of your board of directors if I am going to get an MBA. Like Benjamin Franklin once said ‘An Investment in knowledge pays the best interest’. I can guarantee the Marshall Islands board of directors that once I get my MBA I will be back and be an asset to our...

Personal Responsibility

...to you that statement starts sinking in, and you start to realize how true it is. The decisions that help you lead to a successful life are all determined by how you treat your own individual personal responsibility. How you deal with your own personal responsibility factors into each and every one of those decisions you make on a daily basis. Personal responsibility to me is, living and leading a successful lifestyle as an individual. When you learn to lead a successful lifestyle then you start to gain credibility to take on other responsibilities in life. Also, for the majority of time, how well you do with your own personal responsibility factors in on your college success. To obtain college success you need a certain maturity level. In today’s society, when you finish high school we go straight to college. If you have good enough grades, test scores to get into college doesn’t justify being able to live the lifestyle of a college student. Without being personally responsible it will be very difficult on your path for college success. After reading an article on a website by Brian Tracy, I took this quote pertaining to personal responsibility. “The acceptance of personal responsibility is what separates the adult from the child. It’s the great leap forward into maturity. Responsibility is the hallmark of the fully integrated, fully functioning human being.” (Tracy) This quote should be on the front of every college catalog. To me your opinion of that statement, will define...

Personal Reflection

...Personal Reflection Christopher Davis CSS101_4 January 21, 2015 Karin Detweiler Personal Reflection In this course I learned that having commitment brings out our true potential because it motivates us to give our best, overcome obstacles, stand up even after failures, and that my soft skills are more valuable than I realized. Though I have been through this course once before at a different college, when I earned my Associate’s Degree we didn’t do a lot of research because it was a technology school. I was surprised by how much prospective employers look at your soft skills over your knowledge. What surprised me the most was the paragraph that we had to copy and paste when making our APA template. This statement really made me think, (Many students grumble and moan when their instructor assigns them to complete a group project. Some students may worry that they will have to do the whole assignment on their own, if their group members do not pull their weight. Other students insist that they work better on their own. However, students would be wise to note that working in group projects helps them develop and refine their soft skills. Soft skills are “collection of personal, positive attributes and competencies that enhance your relationships, job performance, and value to the market” (Smith, 2011). And, they are becoming increasingly more important...
