Dark Girls: Duke & Berry

...documentary started by depicting the issue of colorism in great depth. “Colorism is defined as prejudice or discrimination based on the relative lightness or darkness of the skin” (Duke & Berry, 2011). In fact, there was a story about the paper bag test that explains this problem of colorism. “The paper bag test determines that if you were lighter than the brown paper bag then you were considered beautiful, smart. If you were darker than that, then you were considered dark and unattractive” (Duke& Berry, 2011). I find this this to be one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard in my life. A paper bag should not be able to determine whether a person is beautiful. However, most dark skinned girls believe the paper bag test because they were ingrained with the belief that they were not beautiful if they were dark skinned, so I don’t blame them. Another topic that was brought up was the history of colonization. “We weren’t even considered people in the eyes of the law nor in the eyes of our neighbors in the country. “Beauty is just a small piece of a much bigger animal, and until we understand that much bigger animal, we will never understand the issue of colorism” (Duke& Berry, 2011). I thought this was a very, very powerful statement in the sense that it opens your eyes about where the root of the problem...

Retail Environment Macy's Inc. Quarter Paper

...|Macy’s Inc. | Macy’s is considered a store; where there are actual brick and motors stores across the United Sates, online website, app, catalog, direct sales, and a kiosk. At first, Macy’s wasn’t my retailer. I originally wanted to do Michael Kors at The Grove, but I had no transportation to the location. I had changed it to Michael Kors in Macy’s Plaza, but there was a misunderstanding to what I was requesting to the teacher. Little did I know that I would learn so much from Macy’s? Everything happens for a reason and this was a sign from God. I’ve learned how Macy’s was founded to their philosophies. I was so shocked about the information I was reading. Even though Macy’s wasn’t my original choice, it taught me so much and I’m very grateful that it ended up like this! |Background | Federated Department Stores, Inc (renamed Macy’s Inc.) was born through the combination of Abraham & Straus of Brooklyn, Filene’s of Boston, F&R Lazarus & Co. of Columbus, OH, and Bloomingdale’s of New York. As Federated emerged in the years of the Great Depression and World War II, it became apparent that the corporation was equipped with both resilience and flexibility. It adapted to the times by implementing innovative retail firsts, such...

Consumerism in America

...Consumerism in America Our economy is based off of consumerism and therefore we have been persuaded by our culture to believe purchasing entities will make us happy. We are trapped in the idea that the more we consume the happier we will become. Many Americans are waking up from this disillusionment through their realization that happiness is not derived from stuff but from a positive perspective on the coexistence of people and experiences. Material possessions on their own do not make people happy. Alex Honnold, a free soloist who lives a simple life devoted only to climbing, insists that what makes people happy is their concentration on community, family and their own tight nit little web. Family and friend groups are ultimately where people find the most satisfaction because there they feel they belong and are accepted. Yet simple experiences such as eating at a dinner table with family are becoming more and more rare. Instead, family members are often focused on their iPhones, laptops or eat completely removed from the table in front of a television. These material objects that are believed to make a person happy instead inhibit the simplest of enjoyable experiences like a family dinner. Outside the family, young people are not experiencing the happiness that is the present moment and the people in front of them. They are constantly connected with everyone they know through services like facebook and texting which offer quick jolts of shallow happiness but remove people...

Hills That Have Eyes

...the bar, to keep out flies. The American and the girl with him sat at a table in the shade, outside the building. It was very hot and the express from Barcelona would come in forty minutes. It stopped at this junction for two minutes and went to Madrid."What should we drink?" the girl asked. She had taken off her hat and put it on the table."It's pretty hot," the man said. "Let's drink beer." "Dos credenzas," the man said into the curtain."Big ones?" a woman asked from the doorway. "Yes. Two big ones." The woman brought two glasses of beer and two felt pads. She put the felt pads and the beer glass on the table and looked at the man and the girl. The girl was looking off at the line of hills. They were white in the sun and the country was brown and dry. Ironic symbol—the hills, traditionally a symbol of attractiveness, beauty, tranquility, appear to Jig as not having these qualities. "They look like white elephants," she said. The Importance of Bbc

...Banks get ready for Greek failure to pay debt At meetings here in Washington, the group of twenty leading nations have been working on plans to deal with the potential damage from a Greek default. A lot of their efforts have been focused on the banking system. If Greece were allowed to go bust, the bonds that banks hold would become worthless. German and French banks are most at risk. So there's been lots of talk here in Washington on how to inject more capital to shore them up. The other big worry is that if Greece defaulted, the financial markets would start turning on other countries. If Italy or Spain were to come under pressure, those here say there isn't enough cash available to help them. That's why finance ministers are working on building a firewall around Greece to stop the situation from getting that far. Turkey bans men from football match Turkish football fans are famed for their raucous passion, and the Turkish Football Federation punishes violent behaviour by making the team play without an audience. But from this week they have moderated that rule, to allow women and children to watch sanctioned matches. Last night the first such game, at the stadium of the top team Fenerbahce, was attended by an unexpectedly large crowd of 41,000 women and children. The players said they approved of the changed atmosphere, where, instead of the usual war-like chanting, there were flowers and applause for both teams. The Federation changed its rules...
