While there are likely several ways in which my graduate educational experience will differ from my undergraduate, I think that one significant change may come from the fact that the coursework will be more content specific and geared towards the knowledge, skills, application and awareness needed to be successful in my chosen career path.
I view the graduate learning community as a network of individuals that have chosen to expand their knowledge and further themselves both personally and professionally. Because of this desire, our community is full of eager learners that are motivated by similar goals. I believe that our community will help each other grow by supportive collaboration and by sharing our unique perspectives on a variety of

Pursue a Master in Business Administration

...achieving a higher degree in education. It always has been my ultimate goal to achieve a master’s in business administration (MBA), but because of the time constraints and long deployments of military service, attending an institution of higher education for an MBA was out of the question. After 30 years of military service and beyond the age of 50, there is no better time to conquer my dreams and achieve my personal goal in obtaining my MBA. This accomplishment will open new a new path toward venturing into another outstanding career. The value of higher education is an important factor for advancement. The opportunity to excel would be the primary reason to achieve this goal while gaining the skills, and knowledge, of management. A position of increased responsibility requires much knowledge to be successful and a company, or business, may fail without these credentials. Mintzberg stated that “managers are important people who are supposed to sit above others, removed and disconnected from the work of making products and selling services. The higher they go, the more important they are, so that on reaching the top, becoming Chief Executive Officer; they are the corporation even if they arrived yesterday. To become such a manager or, better still, such a leader who gets to sit on top, it is necessary to sit in a business school for two years, which enables one to manage anything” (Mintzberg, 2004, p. 6). This statement sums up the value of a master’s degree in business, and the...

...pages were downloaded from Writing Personal Statements Online, available at https://www.e-education.psu.edu/writingpersonalstatementsonline/ Short Personal Statement by a Geology Student Growing up in Canada with a life-long fascination for Canadian geography, I have always been interested in returning to the country. Although my family moved to the US before I entered high school, I have always kept my eyes turned north, especially in recent years as I began to read journal articles about research conducted on John Evans Glacier, located about 80° N latitude. Graduating next semester with a B.S. in computer science and engineering and a minor in geographic information systems, I am interested in attending the University of Alberta for graduate study. Geographic information systems (GIS) is a field especially suited to investigating spatial patterns, modeling diverse scenarios, and overlaying spatial data. This semester, in my advanced GIS course, Spatial Data Structures and Algorithms, I am part of a team developing a temporal database and program for tracing historical trading data. My computer science skills have also been put to use in two summer internship projects, where I acquired proficiency with using LIDAR (light detection and ranging) technology, now favored by NASA in its current 10-year study of Greenland and changes in the ice cap extent. Through my coursework and project experience, I have also accrued skills in using...

Statement of Purpose

...Sample Statement of Purpose: MBA The term “globalism” has become overused, and often misused. In fact, we might say that it has actually been devalued to the level of the everyday language of buzzword-brandishing marketing pundits. Such freewheeling usage has perhaps prompted many a CEO (or future CEO) to launch into a global plan or strategy without proper consideration of the demands and dynamics of the international marketplace. Many would-be globetrotters neglect the acquisition of language skills, knowledge of foreign trade and tax laws, accounting standards, etc., all of which are necessary to effectively “go global.” Superficial knowledge only leads to failure. This has, indeed, happened, and while there is no doubt that neglecting to capture the gains achievable in overseas markets is equally suicidal, misguided attempts at competing globally (along with rapidly developing opportunities in the global marketplace) have placed a dramatic premium on individuals who take the time to properly train themselves in international business. For me, the Columbia MBA is a significant component of this training. I foresee my own career moving in the direction of European/American business, initially from an advisory perspective (i.e. investment banking or consulting) and ultimately from a leadership role within a manufacturing entity, preferably a start-up venture. This prophecy, in part, has evolved from my past experiences in western and eastern Europe which, in turn, have formed...

...dominant unifying values, and sufficient opportunities are available for all people in all communities to fulfill their own potential and contribute to the well-being of others. In local YouthBuild programs, low-income young people ages 16–24 work toward their GEDs or high school diplomas while learning job skills by building affordable houses for homeless and low-income people and participating in leadership development activities in their communities. Many YouthBuild participants are also learning “green” building techniques, assisting with retrofitting existing homes, and discovering how to help make their communities sustainable and environmentally friendly (Cordele Dispatch, 2011).         According to the program manager, Overstreet, (Personal Communication, August 29, 2012), the Cordele YouthBuild program was established in 2004 and was transferred by Congress from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to the U.S. Department of Labor in 2006. The federal YouthBuild program is authorized under the Workforce Investment Act, managed by the US Department of Labor (DOL), and funded through annual appropriations determined by Congress. The Cordele YouthBuild program, just like other YouthBuild programs, is responsible for securing its own funding. They apply competitively for grants from DOL.         Organizations chosen...
