I decided to spend the money to take Valuing Diversity as one of my electives because I want to be educated on the importance of what diversity is in the workforce. Being a finance major, I am hoping to start my own business as a financial advisor in the near future. In the business, I will be working with many people who are different then me and I want to help them plan for short-term and long-term goals to the best of my ability. Taking this class, I want to leave with a better understanding on how to communicate with others in the workforce and in real life situations.
The first time I heard the word “diversity” the one thing that came to my mind is that everyone is unique in their own way. Everyone has different ethnicities, backgrounds, sexual orientation, gender identities, etc. For example, in high school one of my professors had put up a picture on the board. The picture showed a group of people getting along even though they were all different. To them it didn’t matter what color they were or what their background was and that is something I believe that we all need to work on more. …show more content…
Going to a high school with 95% of the students and faculty being Caucasian and Catholics and then coming to a diverse college was something I was not use to. The first day I moved in I was grateful for the help I received from Tasha an African American student. She had a bubbly personality and was very welcoming and helped me get situated in my dorm. Although we may not have looked the same or had the same background the one thing that we had in common was that we were both students here and that we were able to communicate and help one

Improve Communication

...Running head: The Need to Improve Communication through Diversity Skills The Need to Improve Communication through Diversity Skills Christina Smith-Kimball Western Governors University The Need to Improve Communication through Diversity Skills As educators we hold a certain position in our community. Society holds us to a higher standard when it comes to our ability to be aware, adapt, accept, and understand the cultural diversity of the students and families, our co-workers, and volunteers we work with in our community. As our cultural demographics change in our community communication can become a challenge. If we cannot communicate effectively with those we work with we cannot do our jobs effectively. Demographic Changes The United States is changing faster than it ever has before. We can find more evidence of these demographic changes in our public schools more than anywhere else. Three changes that are, and will continue to become more notable in our public school system, is the rate in which immigration has grown, low income families are on the rise, and the natural population growth continues to increase, as quickly as the diversity of that population. Immigration Growth “Immigration have put the United States on a short road to a population diversity never before experienced by any nation—a population in which all races and ethnicities are part of minority groups that make up a complex whole.” (Center for Public Education 2012) As the...

Cultural Diversity of Ford Motor Company Employees

...Cultural Diversity of Ford Motor Company Employees The rise of multinational companies and increased global diversification by even small companies has resulted in people of diverse backgrounds and cultures working together in the same office or for the same organization. Conflict in such situations is predictable, but understanding the diversity issues can help companies implement programs designed to keep conflict at a minimum and to take full advantage of the many benefits which such diversity brings to an organization. Key to understanding how diversity is managed in multinational organizations is understanding the concept of corporate culture (which defines organizations), diversity programs and their use to minimize conflict among employees, and the unique problems that employees working overseas encounter. One of the biggest companies that have worked a lot on diversity is Ford Motor Organization. Ford Motor Company is an American multinational corporation and the world's second largest automaker, selling vehicles in 200 markets and with approximately 345,000 employees on six continents. Ford also is a family with a heritage of strong and clear values. One of the most essential of Ford values is their commitment to diversity and inclusion. For Ford, diversity is a means to an end. Transforming a Company Into a High-Performance Organization

...offices and manufacturing plants get shut-down throughout the world, the morale and culture of ABC changed. ABC lost a lot of their highly skilled, highly valuable employees. They have consciously tried to hire “the best of the best” but yet they are not willing to provide the salaries and benefits to get those individuals. In fact, ABC has really been focusing on cost-cutting measures the last couple of years. Employee recognition and rewards are very rare, bonuses were not given last year, locations in the US continue to get shut down, and layoffs are frequent in order to get headcount and employee expenses down. Purchases of new computers and other technology equipment are considered an unnecessary expense. Understandably, turnover is high and those who stay tend not to be satisfied. Many leave quickly; others just complain and talk about how much better the company used to be. ABC was the organization reviewed in my OCI paper. ABC’s highest style rating was conventional and their second highest style was approval. Most employees feel the need to conform, to not get involved in any disagreements, and to have superficial relationships with their co-workers so that everyone likes them and so that they can get promoted. ABC’s weakest style was humanistic or encouraging. Training, helping, and coaching other co-workers are infrequent because the focus is on everyone getting their own stuff done and letting other co-workers figure it out on their own. Diversity

...groups of Xerox employees dating from the 1960s, play an important role in our diversity story. These caucuses, similar to networking and affinity groups, are instrumental in advocating openness, opportunity and inclusion for the entire Xerox community. They work with management to achieve common business objectives, self-advocacy and to create an environment of inclusion. Six caucus groups currently exist to address the concerns and meet the needs of employees who are African-American, Hispanic, Asian, women, African-American women, gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual. Through executive roundtables, our CEO and other senior leaders meet with diverse teams of Xerox employees, often representing one of our caucus groups. During these informal sessions, participants share their views on Xerox’s work environment and business concerns, and identify actionable items for discussion with Xerox’s senior team. The process ensures that the executive leadership team and the CEO are working together to resABSTRACT. Currently, an increasing number of organizations are attempting to enhance inclusiveness of under represented individuals through proactive efforts to manage their diversity. In this article, we define diversity management against the backdrop of its predecessor, affirmative action. Next, selected examples of organizations that have experienced specific positive bottom line results from diversity management strategies are discussed. Unit 2- Equality, Diversity and Rights

...In this report I will be explaining the concepts of equality, diversity and rights which relate to Health and social care. I will then go into describe discriminatory practices that are used within health and social care setting and the effects that they have on the service users. Equality Equality is treating everyone equal in rights, status and opportunities. Its about creating a more equal society, where everyone can participate and are given equal opportunities to help everyone achieve their full potential. There are laws in place to ensure that this happens. An example of this within a care home would be showing the same amount of respect to all residents within the care home, and to give them all equal opportunities. Equal opportunities is giving the same chance to help people fulfil their personal and professional skills regardless of their sexuality, culture, gender, age or social class. Opportunities are important within the health and social care setting. If everyone is not given opportunities then they are unable to progress and gain new skills or knowledge. The word opportunities means to give the same chance to each person so they are able to progress and learn new personal and professional skills. An example of opportunity within a hospital would be giving all staff the chance to go in training courses to learn new skills, techniques, or about any new discovers, so they have better knowledge. This then enables the staff to give a better derive to all...

Articles About Rh

...in support of the reproductive health law Rappler.com Published 5:26 PM, March 27, 2014 Updated 5:26 PM, March 27, 2014 [pic] MANILA, Philippines – A social media campaign is underway to raise awareness in support of the reproductive health (RH) law, whose implementation has been put on hold by the Supreme Court for a year a now. Republic Act 10354, which would provide information on and access to reproductive health services, is under status quo ante order “until further orders” by the Supreme Court (SC). The law – probably the most polarizing national issue today – was passed on December 18, 2012, after 13 years in Congress. Anti-RH advocates immediately questioned the constitutionality of the law before the SC. The high court is expected to decide on the case in April, with insiders predicting the law could be headed for defeat in the Supreme Court. House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr has said that declaring the RH law as unconstitutional would be "a veto against the will of majority of our people." As decision time nears, frustrated reproductive health supporters are taking the fight to the social media world. The #Yes2RH campaign was initiated by Likhaan Center for Women's Health, in cooperation with several other pro-RH organization. It will run from March 28 until April 8. Likhaan calls on other RH advocates to support the campaign, and hopefully influence the upcoming SC decision. Using the hashtag #Yes2RH, they've started a campaign that asks...

...there are continuing disparities in the incidence of illness and death among African Americans, Latino/Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Alaskan Natives and Pacific Islanders as compared with the US population as a whole." --National Center for Cultural Competence Population addressed Population addressed In 1950, U.S.-born whites made up about 90 percent of the U.S. population. By 2000, this number declined to about 75 percent, and by 2050 non-Hispanic whites will be in the numerical minority (U.S. Census Bureau 2001, 2002). This rapid diversification requires healthcare organizations to pay closer attention to cross-cultural issues if they are to meet the healthcare needs of the nation and continue to maintain a high standard of care. Looking at the Country as a whole the current area of discussion for this paper is the area of Western North Carolina and the population of Asheville, which is a melting pot of cultures which the combination they create is unique to no other. Applying Balanced Scorecard to Education

...Applying the Balanced Scorecard to Education DEMETRIUS KARATHANOS PATRICIA KARATHANOS Southeast Missouri State University Cape Girardeau, Missouri T he concept of the balanced scorecard (BSC) was first introduced by Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton (1992) in their now widely cited Harvard Business Review article, “The Balanced Scorecard—Measures that Drive Performance.” The widespread adoption and use of the BSC is well documented. For example, Kaplan and Norton (2001) reported that by 2001 about 50% of the Fortune 1000 companies in North America and 40% to 45% of companies in Europe were using the BSC. The basic premise of the BSC is that financial results alone cannot capture value-creating activities (Kaplan & Norton, 2001). In other words, financial measures are lagging indicators and, as such, are not effective in identifying the drivers or activities that affect financial results. Kaplan and Norton (1992) suggested that organizations, while using financial measures, should develop a comprehensive set of additional measures to use as leading indicators, or predictors, of financial performance. They suggested that measures should be developed that address four perspectives: 1. The financial perspective. Measures in this perspective should answer the question, “How should we appear to our shareholders?” 2. The customer perspective. These measures should answer the question, ABSTRACT. Although the application of the balanced scorecard (BSC) in the business sector...
