Personal Statement

I am looking forward to pursuing a Master’s of Science in Public Administration because I want to accrue skills to assist me in working with offenders of the justice system. Life is about choices. I have been taught that the choices we make can either be optimistic or pessimistic. Above all, I am a realist, and no matter what I want in the future, what is most important now, is the present; which is the living moment where as I can demonstrate actions that will provide a brighter future. Walden University, I stand knocking at your door to allow me to refocus on this never-ending journey in life which I call, “education”.

As an undergraduate student at Elizabeth City State University, I was very active in working with at risk populations where I held a position as a Habilitation Technician. I also completed a social work internship at a local elementary school that was in a low-economical environment. These positions served as the foundation to my passion to serve at risk and rehabilitative populations.

Since I have began my career, I have continued to study best practices in my career field and gained professional development to keep me marketable and up to date. I have done a variety of home based counseling to include, individual, family, child, adolescents and adult mental health, I co-facilitated a larceny reduction program, created and implemented individualized service plans. All while raising two sets of twins as a single mother I remained optimistic through real-life hardships and challenges. I still feel a void and know that I am missing a very important piece to my complicated puzzle I call life. I know that there is something about education that is liberating.

My life has taken a different avenue than one would imagine. Yes, you would think that obtaining a college degree would pave my roads with smooth concrete. Consequently, I have stumbled across cobblestones and rocky roads along the way. These rocky roads caused me to leave one of my goals unfinished. It resulted in me having a unfinished Mater’s Degree. On the contrary it did result in a blessing of another set of beautiful twins for me. I also suffered with congestive heart failure as a result of childbirth, which as given me another outlook on life. I now realized that I can not lose site of one of my “golden tickets”, education. I aspire to be a federal probation officer and I know in order to accomplish this goal , I have to obtain adequate education. I have reviewed several programs and found your Masters of Science in Public Administration to be the most compatible with my needs, academically, personally, and professionally.

There is something about education that can free us! Seven years later and a family to support, I have dusted off my “ruby slippers”, ironed my “sky blue dress” and have a host of “characters: to include my family and friends. I am ready to walk the “yellow brick road” at Walden University in hopes to obtain a Masters of Science in Public Administration, this will lead me to my destination “somewhere over the rainbow.”

...As a child, I always enjoyed watching the Discovery health channel and learning and practicing healthy lifestyle habits with my mother. Throughout my life I have developed a strong passion for helping others through direct service however I can. Although my three older siblings have pursued passions in economics and politics that require lots of repetitive desk work, meetings and traveling; I have chosen to take a different route to make a positive impact on the lives of others by combining my interests in health and passion for helping others directly by pursuing a career in the fast-paced, ever-changing and highly rewarding field of Emergency room medicine. As a doctor, not only do I want to diagnose and treat patients as efficiently and accurately as I can in the hospital, I want to give back to surrounding communities by educating youth on healthy lifestyle habits because growing up I received minimal education on healthy living and America is currently in the midst of a health crisis. Various lessons I have learned and qualities that I have developed by participating in extracurricular activities such as running track, will assist me on my path to becoming a doctor. In track, it is either give up when the going gets tough, as it always does, or persevere through the pain to accomplish a greater reward; there are no breaks or stoppage in play. Similar to the field of medicine, the 4x400 meter race is highly competitive and not a race for just anyone. It is a race that requires...

...materials for our interview. We began our interview and I listened intently while Ms. Bakutis told me of all the wonderful opportunities Morris Graduate College has to offer. We discussed which program may work best for me, location, and financial aid. As we were closing out the interview Ms Bakutis opened a black folder shaped like an elegant envelope and pulled out papers that needed to be returned as soon as possible. She then alerted me that classes would begin on December 2nd, 2013, so it would be beneficial to me to get started as soon as possible. The final thing Ms. Bakutis told me as we wrapped up our meeting is that I would need to submit a personal statement along with two letters of recommendation. Whoa!!!!! Personal Statement

...Personal Statement. Shaniyah Tensae S4-English September 17th, 2014. Dear Admissions Committee, Upon many months of reflection, I have made decisions that I believe will serve me, and perhaps others, as we begin our adult journey called life. I have made many wrongs but I know that with these wrongs I have learnt a lesson at the end of it. As some people may say, ‘In life you get the test then get the lesson.’ And with this I do agree. In life I believe that we are given a test to see if we fail or succeed. If we succeed well that’s onto another test and trials. But if we do fail, we learn what we did wrong and what we can do to fix it. There’s nothing wrong with failing a test, because we can always study and study until we are sure that we can pass and then go and ace the test and that’s where you learn your lesson. There are many different tests in life and we may not all get the same ones but that’s life. Because we are all different and that’s the greatest thing to remember. That we are all different, and it’s okay to be different. To put this theory to the test, let’s take a struggle I had a couple years ago. We all lose people we care about. Whether it be your mom, dad, sister, brother, or spouse. We all lose people and it all affects us in different ways. Well, when I was 11 years old I lost my grandfather. Losing him hit me very hard. He is my everything. So to lose that something in your life that matters to you most is going to affect...

Having majored in Social Sciences in HKU Space Community college has sparked my interest on sociology and I have gained greater insight into some institutions, especially the education system in Hong Kong. I would like to further investigate on what social issue that affect student’s learning or mechanism the government had processed to enhance Hong Kong education. Hence I would like to pursue a degree in Faculty of Education in Liberal Studies in Chinese University of Hong Kong to equip myself for the upcoming challenge. Cramming up all the knowledge in education institution is meaningless. What most important is having a wide variety of life experience and critical mindset. In order to get more exposure to the social issue, I participated in numerous extra-curricular activities and social events. I have been a teacher assistant in tutorial Centre and guitar tutor for leisure class in recent years. These experiences have greatly escalated my passion towards teaching since I need to explain the concept clearly so as to eradicate students’ bewilderment. ...Andrew Breault Mrs. Pennycuff Personal Statement Essay (Rough Draft) 30 August 2012 “Should I run?” “Yeah, get the hell out of here!” One spring night in March of 2010 I made the worst mistake of my life that turned out to be one of the biggest turning points in my short lived existence on this earth. During my life there have always been lessons, achievements, and faults. What is interesting about those three aspects is that you have to have all three of them in order to have the others. One cannot learn a truly valuable lesson without a previous fault; therefore you cannot achieve and accomplish goals without the knowledge gained from the lessons learned. Learning lessons and values is the key to understanding who you are, and what you are going to do. Yes, learning is great, but it is what you do with that knowledge that in fact defines the person. The lessons I learned from this event are always with me, they have made an indescribable impact in the person I have to grown to be today. This is the incident that changed my life and gave me the greatest wakeup call I have ever known. BMW manufactured a sport crossover called the X5. The X5 has a powerful engine and has remarkable handling. My father had always driven SUVs’ and wanted to try something new so he acquired a 2008 BMW X5. On this spring night I decided to try out the speed of the car. There is a street called West Parkway, which is approximately three quarters of a mile. This street is long and straight...
