Personality Assessment and Theories

Personality tests can be objective or projective. Through using a standardized format or through assessing yourself more directly the answers may change from day-to-day or month to month. People behave differently in varying situations through tracking personalities many inconsistences are found. Whether someone is given a structured interview or a personality inventory may not matter when the individual has learned and adapted. Personality inventories such as the NEO-PI-R or big 5 are based on the trait theory of personality. This theory stands for a more factored analysis that holds group traits accountable for personal behaviors. One example of trait in this theory is a person’s tendency to be aggressive. Eysenck’s theory based on traits claimed there were areas of personality; emotional stability, introversion-extroversion, and psychoticism. These tests take into account inherent predisposed behaviors and talents. Tests that gauge a person’s strengths and weaknesses this way are multiple choice formats, centered on extroversion, orderliness, emotional stability, accommodation, and inquisitiveness.
Each time a big 5 assessment was taken results received differed. I think the results partially have to do with how you are feeling on a day-to-day basis and should be used as a guide. I believe these assessments to be objective and open to interpretation considering life situations. These are the kinds of surveys that a person has to think honestly about their current position and not think of the past or future which can be difficult.
Similar to trait theory is the humanistic theory based upon what drives an individual. This theory explains that in order to achieve goals considered to be a reward is how motivation in channeled. This is obvious when considering that there are some people adept at math and

...S08 psychology of personality This essay will provide information on the Thematic Apperception Test and the Millon Multiaxial Personality Test. It will be followed by a compare and contrast section on the two personality assessment instruments. The Thematic Apperception Test or TAT was first developed in 1935 by Henry Murray and Christiana Morgan at the Harvard Psychological Clinic. It is based in the psychodynamic theories of personality. The TAT is administered as part of a group of tests intended to evaluate personality. The TAT is a projective instrument intended to evaluate a person's patterns of thought, attitudes, observational capacity, and emotional responses to ambiguous test materials. In the case of the TAT, the ambiguous materials consist of a set of black, white and gray cards which portray human figures in a variety of settings and situations. The subject is asked to tell the examiner a story about each card that includes the event shown in the picture; what has led up to it; what the characters in the picture are feeling and thinking; and the outcome of the event. The stories reveal expectations of relationships with peers, parents and/or other authority figures, subordinates, and possible romantic partners. In addition to evaluating the content of the stories, the examiner evaluates the subject's manner, vocal tones, posture, hesitations, and other signs of an emotional response to a particular story picture. When interpreting TAT responses...

...Personality Assessment and Theories Mary Beers BEH/225 Week 6 Day 5 Personality is a special gift for each and every individual. The uniqueness we all have is very complex as well as interesting. Psychologists have different techniques for the understanding and explaining the way an individual thinks and acts for each situation in one’s life. The four methods a psychologist use to test our personality. The four are personal interviews, direct observations of behavior, projective testing and objective testing may be used to calculate and explain our personality. The Personal interview is the Psychodynamic Humanistic and Social Learning theory. Psychologists use the test by obtaining information in ways such as conversation, some structured and some unstructured interviews are given. The information obtained is used to evaluate how a person is structured individually. The unstructured interview is more of a spontaneous nature where as the structured interview is a more focused on more structured and specialized material. The structure interview will hence lead the direction of the interview between client and psychologists. Direct observation is the second method used to gather information. The direct observation is conducted thru observing a client. This method is preferred by the...

Personality Assessment

...Effective Leadership and Management in Nursing According to the Myers- Briggs assessment, I discovered that my personality was ISTJ (Introverted Sensing Thinking Judging). The detailed version of this assessment was described as moderately expressed introvert, slightly expressed sensing personality, slightly expressed thinking personality, and moderately expressed judging personality. Nothing made sense to me at first, but after I read the detailed explanation I found out that there were several similarities. According to the assessment – “They have a keen sense of right and wrong, especially in their area of interest and/or responsibility” (ISTJ, 2012). This statement is true as have often noticed that when I try to get work done I do it if I have a complete awareness of what is the right approach. I am extremely devoted to the task at hand. People who interact with me think that I have a cold barrier in front of me at first glance. It takes me a while to warm up to others. I always believe in planning and adopting a methodical approach. This helps me to finish my tasks on time in an orderly fashion. I always make it a point to meet deadlines. Therefore, I always work faster and love to be busy. I am not happy when my colleagues do not finish their work on time. Their inconsistency upsets me. I prefer to stick to conventional methods on performing a tasks. I believe if I follow an approach that is most familiar, work gets done at a faster pace...

Personality Assessment

...Throughout my years of growing up, I had came across many personality assessments in my life, yet none of them had got me thinking that I was looking in to a personality trait mirror, until this one. I discovered that most of the traits had given feedback very accurately and among these traits, the most accurate one of all was ‘extraversion’, it stated exactly who I feel I portray; a sociable, energetic, outgoing and lively person that enjoys being around people as much as they love to be around me. The only traits that caught my attention was my ‘activity level’ and ‘gregariousness’ because the two results somewhat contradicted themselves. Gregariousness describes a person who is fond of the company of others and I scored 96 out of a possible 99 points. Yet I only scored 32 points for my ‘activity level’ which defines whether individuals live active, fast paced and busy lives. ‘Gregariousness’ scored as my top trait, which means that I would find the company of others very rewarding, which is true because much of my time spent is with someone or seeking someone for company. On the contrary, I only received an average score for ‘activity level’ which I feel is too low because my life is considered to be fast paced as I always try to finish as many tasks as fast as possible to allocate more time to fulfill my gregariousness. As for the most helpful feedback I received through this assessment would be ‘imagination’ which I scored 10 out of 99. I always felt I had a rich imagination...

It was interesting to know common in psychology categorization criterion or indicator measuring personality traits for myself. 2. Do you feel the results are accurate? I am very sure nothing in existing world we can 100% sure about. I can say, it definitely has some true in it! 3. Describe some emotional and physical behaviors that you exhibit. I am introvert, Introvert live in inside him or herself, all the most important thing in his life happening inside him. This does not mean that he does not see the world around him; he just pays much less attention than the inner world. And even looking outside, he looks at everything through the prism itself. It is not self-centered, but rather isolation, isolation on himself. His world is a world of his experiences, feelings and thoughts. There he goes off to recuperate after a collision with external reality. Outside world brings him more tests than joy. But his inner world, his refuge, he knows inside out. If you ask an introvert, what happens to him inside, he cannot describe it, because there is no such word or words you need a lot. And if this is to ask an extrovert, he also cannot say anything, but because their inner world for him - a dark...

Personality Assessments and Theories

...Personality Assessments and Theories Pamela Draughn BEH 225 October 5, 2010 Heddora Wilburn Personality Assessments and Theories There are different types of personality theories and assessments to determine the personalities of every person. In measuring a person personality there are four basic tools: the personal interview; direct observation of behavior; objective tests; and projective tests. Psychodynamic is related to personal interviews and projective tests, which is repressed problems from early childhood. Humanistic is related to personal interviews and objective tests. Trait is related to objective test. Social Learning is related to interviews, objective tests, and observations. Objective tests are the most widely used tools for assessing personality, but they have two serious drawbacks. First, they rely entirely on self-report. If people do not know themselves well, or cannot be entirely objective about themselves, or want to paint a particular picture of themselves, self-report questionnaire results have limited usefulness (Funder, 1991). But the results can change and may not reflect on the real personality of the person especially if the person does not know him or her that well, or cannot be entirely objective about themselves, or what to paint a particular picture of themselves. The general mood and the person’s ability to concentrate when taking the test can significantly affect the result as well. The results I got from test were all mostly...

My Personality Assessment

...1. After completing the survey's, I agree with the results. I've done personality tests before, and I'm a very self reflective person- for the most part, the answers are what I thought they would be. For example, on the first survey, my highest relative score was for emotional mentoring; this entails helping others with their emotions and showing empathy. I've always considered myself an empathetic person, and I'm always trying to help others. Another example, is the second survey. The results state that "(I am) a high achiever... workaholic... do whatever it takes to complete assignments or projects on time and as close to perfection as possible". I've always been a very driven and ambitious person, aiming to be highly successful in everything that I do. 2. My Emotional Intelligence/Personality Assessment test all provide similar interpretations of myself. The theme is that I'm a logical and ambitious person, and that I can understand the emotions of others relatively well. However, I still need some work managing my own emotions. I believe that the last survey is the most valid, simply because it was the most in-depth. There are 146 questions on that survey, and is questions many aspects of self, such how you handle stress, how you read other's emotions, and how you would...

Psychoanalytic Personality Assessment

...Psychoanalytic Personality Assessment When people think of psychology, many think of it as a science but in reality, psychology has different levels with many dimensions. Psychology is compounded with many theories and studies that by trial, and error, have made psychology into the discipline that it has become today. Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Alfred Adler are just a few scholars that have helped psychology become the science studied today. One must remember that these men are psychologists, yet they all possessed very different views and theories from one another. Sigmund Freud Probably one of the best known psychologist’s is Sigmund Freud; he has been the most influential on psychodynamic ideas. His psychodynamic therapy was used to cover the theories of personality and a source of therapy to go along with it. He believed that human behavior comes from three types of intuitions or impulses, which are the id, the ego, and the superego. The id is responsible for unconscious thoughts of personal pleasures. The id grows into the ego, which is basically on a conscious level and is thought to protect one’s self or self-preservation. The ego becomes the superego, which develops to consist of thoughts on one’s moral judgments and conscience. The id, the ego, and the superego are supposed to work together to form human behavior (George, 2008). Freud believed that traits of one’s behavior started at birth, which led him to break down behavior into stages...

Psychoanalytic Personality Assessment

...Personality Reflection University of Phoenix PSY 250 Most people, physically speaking are very similar in compound. We are all carbon-based life forms that are composed mostly of water. We all have the same organs and look similar. So why is everyone so much different? The answer to that question is our personalities. A personality derives from our biology, our environment, and our experiences. The personality is the brains way of coping with certain situations. For some, they choose to be very extroverted, perhaps so they can feel more in control of the situation. Many extroverted, confident people become successful and not because they are the smartest but because they have a personality that is meant for leadership. This is not to say that a shy person cannot be successful, but their means of achieving success may be different from an outgoing counterpart. I would like to think of myself as a very personable being. I try not to be shy, although sometimes I am comforted by solitude. Confidence is a feature of my personality that I am very proud of. Simply being confident can make controlling or dealing with adversity much easier. I want to think of myself as being ambitious, although I have noticed that deteriorating, as I grow older. Ambition may fade as the years past because of the realization that childhood dreams have become out of reach. Given that I am 31 years old, I am at that age where one...

Psychoanalytic Personality Assessment

...Psychoanalytic Personality Assessment Psychotherapy has different approaches depending on the school, theorist, or person administering the therapy. Is one approach better than the other? This is an extremely difficult question to answer. The best way to determine which approach to administer is by using knowledge coupled with unique information in regards to the individual seeking psychotherapy. For psychotherapy to work effectively, one must first evaluate the psychological issue at hand. Every individual has a personality that is uniquely made up eight key aspects that are the unconscious, ego forces, biological, conditioning, cognitive, traits, spiritual dimension, and interaction. Although there might be similarities between personalities, it is impossible to have the same eight key aspects on more than one individual. Personality psychology truly is fascinating and is defined as the scientific study of psychological forces that make individuals unique. This paper will compare and contrast the psychoanalytic theories of Freud, Jung, and Adler. These three theorists devoted much of their time and energy developing unique approaches, methods, and techniques of psychoanalytic theory used to treat patients today. Sigmund Freud was the true founder of the psychoanalytic theory. Later, his student’s Alfred Adler and Carl Jung questioned Freud’s interpretation of dreams resulting in the Adler and Jungian theories. The psychoanalytic theory developed by Freud encouraged patients...
