There are a lot of characteristics that need to be considered while looking as someone as a possible new hire. During my research I came across an article on the FBI website titled Perspective: Characteristics of an Ideal Officer, written by Larry Capps. In the article it lists several characteristics to be considered when hiring new officers. In no particular order here are three important characteristics in which I value the most and why.
First one to be discussed is ethics. Ethics is someone’s moral barometer. The ability for a person to do what is right, because it is the right thing to do. Law enforcement officers are faced with a myriad of situations where their morals with be tried and tested. The officer that stays true to their morals and ethics, is an honest law enforcement officer who can be trusted to represent wherever you work honorably and respectfully.
Second is leadership skills. Generally speaking most law enforcement officers are of the type-A mentality. Law enforcement officers seek to protect and serve the community in which they live and work, to uphold the laws, and to hold others responsible for breaking those laws. Compassion is one that not most think of offhand. However, I feel compassion is essential. Law enforcement officers see humanity at its worst. Law enforcement officers will deal with some of the same habitual offenders. For instance, victims of domestic violence and or sexual abuse, statistics show will most likely be victimized again because of their traumatic history and their sense of normal being misguided from a young age. Another example would be a runaway juvenile who continues to run away. Unless someone asks the child we may never know what the child is trying to run away from. Maybe the child is just a delinquent, but maybe the child is not and is running away from something worse such as physical and or sexual abuse. This is why compassion is on my
