There is nothing like scrubbing someone else's toilet to inspire one with determination toward obtaining an education. Because of my absolute commitment toward earning my degree, I got a flexible shift at a retail warehouse which enabled me to a cquire my degree while supporting myself financially. Enrolled at the local community college, I experienced a different world opening up to me; excited by a new encouraging environment, I excelled academically. I learned that if I tried hard, I could suc ceed; if I wanted something badly enough, I possessed the ability to take advantage of these opportunities. I worked a minimum 35 - hour workweek for five years to put myself through school without succumbing to the temptation of a student loan. I paid tuiti on up front with the money I earned. Founded in 1912, Tennessee State University (TSU) is a comprehensive, urban, coeducational, land-grant institution. There are currently two locations. There is the 500-acre main campus that nestles in a beautiful residential neighborhood along the Cumberland River, and the downtown Avon Williams campus that sits near the center of Nashville’s business and government district. There are many students that come from all across the country. These students bring many different cultures that make Tennessee State what it is today. In 1909, the Tennessee State General Assembly created three normal schools, including the Agricultural and Industrial Normal School, which would grow to become TSU. The first 247 students began their academic careers on June 19, 1912, and William Jasper Hale served as head of the school. Students, faculty, and staff worked together as a family to keep the institution operating, whether the activity demanded clearing rocks, harvesting crops, or carrying chairs from class to class. The school gained the capacity to grant bachelor’s degrees in 1922, reflecting its new status as a four-year teachers’ college. By 1924, the college became known as the Agricultural and Industrial State Normal College and the first degrees were awarded. In 1927, “Normal” was dropped from the name. With such a versatile certification as, Occupational Health and Safety Officer, the possibilities for my future are exciting. However, I believe that before a career is even considered, one must examine his motivations. I graduated from the University of Yaoundé in 1987 with a Bachelor at Law. Soon after my graduation, I secured a job with Pecten Oil as a Lease hand. With no proper orientation, I was sent to the field and on that same day I was unconsciously rushed to a hospital for an injury incurred on site. This lasted for 08 months after which period I decided that never again should any other worker be injured for lack of safety measures on any worksite. For that reason, when I travelled over to Canada, I took the Construction Safety Officers course. I am presently enrolled as a graduate student in Occupational Health and Safety at the Columbia Southern University. ...Reflective Essay Beginning Teaching Experiences My teaching experiences have been quite varied. I began my career as a high school business education teacher in a small rural Midwestern school. Because there were only two teachers in the department, I taught a wide variety of courses. The small setting enabled me to get to know several of the students and faculty quite well and working with students at this age level helped me develop skills in organization and motivation. I found that it was important to have enough material for the entire class period because many students at this age do not seem to know what to do with free time. I was taught a very valuable lesson during my tenure at this school, although I didn’t realize it at the time. At the end of the accounting course I was teaching, students were required to complete a practice set. A practice set is a simulated exercise where students become bookkeepers for a hypothetical company. They have the opportunity to work through the entire accounting cycle—from opening the accounts as the business begins its daily operations to closing them out at the end of the business’ fiscal period. Students are required to record daily transactions, write checks, and prepare financial reports. It is a mammoth project and takes a lot of time both in class and out of class.
