Study Guide: Lesson 18
Arguments for the Existence of God

Lesson Overview:

In this lesson, we arrive at 1 of the most important questions of the course for Christians: Do we have good reasons to believe that God exists? Today, many are claiming that there is no evidence for God’s existence and those who believe in God are just deluding themselves. However, this lesson will show that some very interesting arguments have been developed throughout the history of philosophy that demonstrate that the theist is within his epistemic rights in believing in God. While the case is not 100% certain (few things are in philosophy), it is certainly reasonable in the absence of any contrary evidence to hold that God exists as the best explanation for certain effects we observe in creation.

Tasks:

View and take notes of the presentation: “Arguments for God’s Existence.”

Read “The Absurdity of Life without God” by William Lane Craig.

This reading by Christian philosopher William Lane Craig is titled the “The Absurdity of Life without God.” In this powerful argument, Craig seriously considers the ramifications for us if in fact there really is no God. I assign it to my students on campus and they always tell me it is their favorite reading of the semester. I think you will really enjoy it. It is not a difficult reading and is very powerful on a personal level. While it does not prove God's existence, it does add positive epistemic evidence for the cumulative case for God as the best explanation. As you read, make sure you understand the following points and questions:

* What are the 3 specific areas in which Craig argues life is absurd if there is no God or Immortality? * What is the atheist response to each of these areas and why does that response ultimately fail according to Craig? * What is the dilemma for modern man as a result of denying God’s

While the historian or sociologist may study religious beliefs, but his focus is not specifically on the truth or reasonableness of such belief theologian looks at religous beliefs from within, as an adherent or representative of a religous tradition. philosophy of religon may be engaged in by thinkers who are not religous at all, as well as by committed religous thinkers philosophy of religion not so much religious thinking as it is thinking about religion. Religious Philosophy is Religious thinking Explain the arguments for and problems with fideism. Fideism: human beings are never religously neutral; they are always either in faithful service to or in rebellion against God. Claims that faith is the precondition for any correct thinking about religion Problem: fideist cannot attempt to win over his critics by rational argument as the presupposition of such dialouge means the possibility of common ground (fideists deny common ground) eliminates the possibility of showing the nonbeliever the superiority of a religous worldview where should...

The Meatpacking Industry In Upton Sinclair's The Jungle

...meatpacking industry was controlled by a few companies. As a result, the Sherman-Anti Trust was created to break up those Beef Trusts. While that worked to break them up initially, the meatpacking industry today is controlled mainly by 4 companies. Investigative journalist Eric Schlosser states, “In 1970 the top four meatpacking firms slaughtered on 21 percent of the nation's cattle…. Today the top four meatpacking firms- ConAgra, IBP, Excel, and National Beef- slaughter about 84 percent of the nation's cattle” (Schlosser 137-138). Large strides have been made to reform the meat packing industry, but these companies alway end up going back to their original practices. These practices contaminate meat and could kill consumers. Infact, “1 in 6 Americans, or 48 million people are sickened by food-borne illnesses” (Food Processing and Slaughtering). The recall system should be in place to help protect lives, but in fact it does the opposite. Food-borne illnesses are the main reasons for recalls. These bacteria include Campylobacteriosis, E. coli 0157:H7, Listeria, or Salmonella: “Campylobacteriosis is often found in chickens and is commonly contracted by eating undercooked poultry or drinking raw milk. Infected fecal matter that’s on the hide could get into the meat if slaughtered improperly, and can cause E. coli 0157:H7. Listeria is an environmental microorganism that can be found in the water droplets on ceilings and floor drains. Salmonella is a group of bacteria in animal feces...

...February 2015 New York State Bar Examination Essay Questions © 2015 New York State Board of Law Examiners QUESTION 1 In 1995, Walt, a widower, executed a will prepared by his lawyer, Len, which contained the following dispositive provisions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. I give and devise my residence to my daughter, Amy. I give and bequeath my 100 shares of C Corp. to my son, Ben. I give and bequeath $100,000 to my son, Cal. I give and bequeath $100,000 to the American Red Cross. I give, devise and bequeath all of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate to my grandson, Dave. Walt signed the will at Len’s office, and at Walt’s request, Len and Walt’s son, Ben, signed as witnesses in the presence of Walt and each other after Walt acknowledged that the document was his will. In 2000, Walt duly executed a new will which expressly revoked any and all wills previously made by him. In 2001, Walt decided that he did not like the terms of the 2000 will and physically destroyed it by his own hand. Walt died last year, survived by Amy, Ben, Cal, and Dave. Dave is Walt’s only grandson and is the son of Walt’s deceased son, Ed. The 1995 will has been admitted to probate over the objections of Cal that the 1995 will had not been properly executed and that, in any event, it had been revoked. Walt’s residence has been valued at $300,000, and his 100 shares of C Corp. have been valued at $200,000. After payment of all debts, expenses and taxes, the net estate...

Weir Allison

...A STUDY OF FULVIA by Allison Jean Weir A thesis submitted to the Department of Classics In conformity with the requirements for The degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada December 2007 copyright © Allison Jean Weir 2007 Abstract Who was Fulvia? Was she the politically aggressive and dominating wife of Mark Antony as Cicero and Plutarch describe her? Or was she a loyal mother and wife, as Asconius and Appian suggest? These contrasting accounts in the ancient sources warrant further investigation. This thesis seeks to explore the nature of Fulvia’s role in history to the extent that the evidence permits. Fulvia is most famous for her activities during Antony’s consulship (44 BC) and his brother Lucius Antonius’ struggle against C. Octavian in the Perusine War (41-40 BC). But there is a discrepancy among the authors as to what extent she was actually involved. Cicero, Octavian and Antony, who were all key players in events, provide their own particular versions of what occurred. Later authors, such as Appian and Dio, may have been influenced by these earlier, hostile accounts of Fulvia. This is the first study in English to make use of all the available evidence, both literary and material, pertaining to Fulvia. Modern scholarship has a tendency to concentrate almost exclusively on events towards the end of Fulvia’s life, in particular the Perusine War, about which the evidence is much more abundant in later sources such as Appian and...
