Philadelphia

The Movie Philadelphia is about lawyer Andy Becket. Andy Becket is a very successful lawyer in a well respected law firm. Andy has two lives, the conservative Andy at work, and the homosexual Andy who has contracted the HIV virus. Once his coworkers at the office start noticing legions on his face, Andy is fired for incompetence. He knew there was more to his release so he sought out legal representation from Joseph Miller to sue the company he had worked for, for firing him because of his AIDs condition. As the months of the trial go by, Andy becomes more and more frail as his condition takes over his body. Towards the end of the trial Andy collapses in the court and is rushed to the hospital. The case was won and Andy soon after passes of AIDs related disease. The role of family in this movie is interesting because there is a mass difference between the family of Andy Becket and the family of Joseph Miller. Andy Becket comes from a traditional family he is the only son and grew up with his mother and father. Andy moves away from the traditional family because he is a homosexual. In the time setting of the movie, the family he lives with consists of Miguel, his partner, and three friends of the gay community. Joseph Miller's family is an example of a traditional family. He is married and has a little girl. Joseph Miller grew up in a traditional family and explains to Andy that people who grew up like him aren't exposed to nontraditional lifestyles and that is why people judge and have misconceptions about the gay community. To truly understand the situation it important to have a strong character prospective. The family dynamic perspective of Andy Becket has many levels. Andy has been diagnosed with HIV but he won't let it take him over. Andy continues to

Police commanders designed 120 foot patrol areas around these corners, and stratified randomization was used to assign pairs of foot patrols with similar crime rates as either a comparison or a target area. * Officers generally patrolled in pairs with two pairs assigned to each foot patrol. They worked from Tuesday morning to Saturday night in two shifts (10am to 6pm, 6pm to 2am). Identify an operational definition used by the researchers. * An operational definition used by researchers is describing a foot patrol as a police officer working on foot throughout their beat or assigned area rather than utilizing a vehicle. Provide one example of inductive logic and one example of deductive logic presented in the results. * An example of inductive reasoning is foot patrol beats returned to their pre-experiment crime levels once the foot patrol experiment was concluded. If I Had to Explain

...If I Had to Explain, You Wouldn’t Understand This is a picture of a recent weekend trip north of Traverse City, MI. my Fiancé and I, spent an entire day just riding. We rode up to a lighthouse, through Sleeping Bear Dunes, and all over some of America’s beautiful roads. Why I chose this photograph is because it reminded me of our recent reading by Allan Johnson, In The forest and the Trees, and Barry Glassner, The Culture of Fear. Johnson talked about symbols and value. “But most of what we value is what we learn to value through socialization in a particular system’s culture”(49). What he meant by this was that we value things we are taught to. Whether we are intentionally taught, even know we are learning values, or just absorbing them as we struggle through life. we are acquiring values. A person’s culture plays a huge significant role as to those values learned. I imagine there are quite a few cultures that would not understand the mentality of a biker. The meditation one gets from serene riding alone; no radio, no conversation, just open roads and thought. This is a culture that was learned as Johnson spoke of. The value one possesses was most likely a conscience choice of preference to things they were exposed to. Many cultures stereotype and fear the culture of a motorcyclist. Most motorcyclists that are not casual riders, but bikers, are not the criminals that America portrays them as. They may be obsessive about their machines, similar to a hot rod guy about his...

Patho on Pneumonia

...Infections are caused by an invasion of unwanted organisms that attack ones body. With that being said, pneumonia is an acute infection of the lung parenchyma (Anatomical Chart Company, 2010, p. 100). Pneumonia, like any other infection, has a pathophysiology that describes how the infection affects the body. It also has different causes, several signs and symptoms, a variety of different treatments, and even a long list of possible complications. Pneumonia is always handled with delicate attention, but for individuals who have normal, healthy lungs and a strong immune system the final outcome is almost always a good one. Serious attention needs to be focused on those who are at a greater risk such as the elderly, children, and the immunocomprimised (Anatomical Chart Company, 2010, p. 100). According to the Atlas of Pathophysiology, there are three different basic types of pneumonia: bacterial, viral, and aspiration. The primary cause of pneumonia is an inhalation or aspiration of a pathogen. The secondary cause is related to an existing infection or disease. Each of these are caused by different irritants that result in the same disruption of normal perfusion. The attacks on the lung lead to alveolar inflammation and edema that causes low ventilation and blood and fluid to be pushed into the capillaries. This leads to a stasis in the lung’s gas perfusion and creates a pressure that makes it harder for the individual to breath (Anatomical Chart Company, 2010, p. 100). The...

Code of Ethics in a Corporation

...ETHICS NOTES-Outline: 1: Summary of writing intent leading to thesis 2: Define ethics 3: Discuss the importance of ethics in the business environment 4: Connecting Law and Ethics/The role of ethics in law 5: Elaborate on the ethics side of each case. 6: Summary The question of whether an employee can be terminated for off-duty activity can be answered in numerous ways. Some occupations require employee carry a firm moral code even when they are not present at workplaces such as priests, CEOs, and other public or civil servants while other occupations are more lax or do not even require anything more of their employees rather than to show up on time and perform at expected performance levels. The varying levels of standards, in regards to moral code, with the multitude of industries pose the question of what the underlining basis of these rules are. Because as an employer or manager contemplates the reasoning behind the termination of an employee, there must be a general rule of thumb to abide by in order to make the decision. The rules that the employer or manager relies on are called ethics. When an employee is considered for termination, an ethical approach from the employer’s side as well as the employee’s side must be apparent and clear. In order to better understand the role ethics play in employee relations, we must have a thorough understanding of what ethics is and it’s importance in the business environment. Furthermore, in the context of employee termination...

Nursing Leadrship

...Nursing leadership and management Leadership refers to setting a new direction or a way forward for a group of people, so that can they follow. Management on the other hand is controlling or directing people or resources in a group regarding the values that have already been established. Leadership and being an outstanding leader depends on ones qualities and behaviors that they exhibit in different circumstances or situations (Hader, 2008). Leadership has to go hand in hand with management because; without management, the direction that is set does not reflect on how the new direction is going to be achieved. Others will have to work hard in the shadows that have been left behind by the others. Effective nurse leaders are those who involve others to work together in pursuit of a common goal (Sullivan & Decker, 2005). For this reason, I choose to shadow with my manager for couple of hours to see how a tipical day goes for him. In this essay, I will discuss how my manager manages our unit, his communication style and it effectiveness, his type of leadership style or styles and it effectiveness, and what my thoughts and reactions are about this experience. Our unit is a mixed unit consisting of respiratory and geriatric patients. We also care for stroke patients on the unit. In managing the unit, our manager uses more democratic, or participative leadership style though he also exhibits transactional and transformational styles. According to him...

Women in Liberia

...Kayla Robles Doctor Dawn Dennis History 202A-02 4 May 2016 Freed Black and White Women in Liberia In 1822 the American Colonization Society(ACS), emigrated freed black slaves to Liberia located in West Africa, however, during this time the indigenous had already been living there (Brown, Education in Liberia, 46). Unfortunately, there is not much information on women in the colonization. “Scholars have written surprisingly little on the role of women in the movement. The few historians who have studied women in the colonization movement have examined the rise and decline of female support in the South” (Younger, Philadelphia Ladies Liberia School Association and the Rise and Decline of Northern Female Colonization Support, 237). To fully understand the social aspect of how women were affected in Liberia I will examine the Mississippi women’s colonial experience in Liberia as well as education during the American Colonization particularly in Philadelphia including influential female colonists, the history of the Philadelphia Ladies’ Liberia School Association, and the reasons colonization flourished and failed in Philadelphia. According to Thomas Jefferson in 1787 he believed “Blacks would never achieve full equality in the United States,” Black women in the South were seen as these controlling images or stereotypes that it is natural for women to experience racism, sexism, and poverty. White people saw them as sexually immoral, hypersexual, hyper fertile, or too masculine...

Please see the “Nursing Theorists’ Grading Criteria” document, located on the Materials page of the student Web site. Name: Steve Early Theorist Selected: Sr. Callista Roy Description of Theory: Sister Callista Roy believed that “Humans are bio-psycho-social beings existing within an environment. Needs are created within interrelated adaptive modes: physiological, self-concept, role function, and interdependence” (Taylor 74). Sr. Roy believed that the patient’s modes of adaption were partly innate and partly acquired behaviors; if the behaviors are appropriately applied there is an increase in health restoration. According to "Nursing Theory" (2011), The nursing theory was named “The Adaptation Model,” and includes a “six step nursing process: 1) The first level of assessment, which addresses the patient's behavior, 2)The second level of assessment, which addresses the patient's stimuli, 3)Diagnosis of the patient, 4)Setting goals for the patient's health, 5)Intervention to take actions in order to meet those goals, and 6)Evaluation of the result to determine if goals were met.” Theory’s Historical background: Sister Callista Roy is considered a living legend as she has been awarded various acknowledgements for her contributions to nursing. Communication

...The Importance of Communication in Patient/Client Care According to Philip Burnard, author and vice dean of the School of Nursing Studies, Cardiff, “Communication is a vital aspect of health care”. Burnard P (1997) Effective Communication Skills for Health Professionals, page 2, Cheltenham, Stanley Thomas (Publishers) Ltd. Nurses tend to form a professional relationship with both patients and colleagues requiring effective communication. This is inevitable due to spending the majority of the working day in face to face interaction. Nurses will come across a variety of different patients varying in age, gender, race and culture; each requiring different approaches to communication. The contents of this assignment will demonstrate the importance of essential skills required when communicating with patients/clients in a healthcare environment. Communication is often generalised as ‘verbal’ and ‘non verbal’ however, more in depth ideas and methods of effective communication will be explored within this paper. Communication has three major components: a sender, a message and a receiver. Nursing occasionally requires information to be delivered in a short period of time therefore certain factors have to be considered such as the timing of the message, personal opinions of the patient and abbreviations. Abbreviations should be avoided when dealing with patients, however when it is a matter of urgency this cannot always be the case. (Nursetogether.com) For example, if a patient...
