In this essay I will talk about how Philip has evolved in the novel, “The Cay.” The book, “ The Cay,” is written by Theodore Taylor. Philip is a young boy who was on a boat the was attacked, Philip finds himself stuck on a raft with an old man and a cat. In The Cay , Phillip’s character reveals that through many conflicts he developed logic, hardworking, and maturity.
Phillip demonstrates logic after experiencing blindness as evidenced in the novel when he was able to survive by himself on the cay after Timothy’s death. At the beginning of the novel Philip was angry. For example, he says, “ I became angry and accused her of being a coward.”At the beginning of the the novel Philip was angry at his parents for making him leave Curacao. Towards …show more content…
At the beginning of the novel Philip is dramatic. For example, he says, “ I stood up, threw the palm fibers at him, and screamed, “ You ugly blackman!” When Philip was trying to use the palm fibers he became frustrated and made a big deal about it. Towards the middle of the novel Philip is frightened. I know this because he says, “ During those first few days on the island, the times I spent alone were terrible. It was, of course, being unable to see that made all the sounds so frightening.” When Timothy left Philip, he was scared of being alone in the darkness because of his blindness. At the end of the novel Philip was more mature. As evidenced in the novel he says, “The smoke would rise from the cay in a fat, black column to lead the planes up the Devil’s Mouth. If I heard another aircraft, I’d start a fire and then throw bundles of sea grape into it until I was certain a strong signal was going up from the island.” Philip learned to do things himself and figure out his own problems without Timothy, so he could survive on the island alone.
