Ever since the beginning of the course we have been identifying and analyzing the three stages of childhood and the ten principles based on the philosophy of respect. In our text, “Infants, Toddlers, and Caregivers, A Curriculum of Respectful, Responsive, Relationship-Based Care and Education” by Janet Gonzalez-Mena and Dianne Wildmeyer Eyer, they list and describe the three stages of childhood which include young infants, mobile infants, and toddlers. They also list and describe the ten principles based on the philosophy or respect which include (1) involving infants and toddlers, (2) investing in quality time, (3) learning each child’s unique ways of communication, (4) investing time and energy to build a total person, (5) respect infants …show more content…
Throughout my paper I will be listing and describing the five principles that are based on the philosophy of respect towards toddlers. The five principles based on the philosophy of respect that have to deal with toddlers are principles one, two, five, eight, and ten.
Based on what I have learned throughout the course, I have learned that a child need more than just an adult’s presence. Many people believe that all a child need is to be fed, have a clean diaper, and have things to entertain them. But what they really need is to be cared for and loved. We have learned that there are ten principles based on the philosophy of respect, but not all ten of them have to deal with toddlers. From the ten principles only five of the have to deal with them. Investing in quality time means to focus on individual infants and toddlers, be totally available and fully present, by distinguishing wants-something and wants-nothing. Want-something quality time is when an adult and child are involved in something the caregiver has set up while wants-nothing quality time is when the caregiver makes themselves available without directing the action. An example of investing in quality time with toddlers is by having one on one time with them without any distractions and by providing most, if not all the attention towards the infant. Principle five, respect infants and toddlers as worthy people. With that being said, we need to stop treating toddlers as object. We need to treat them as humans. An example of treating toddlers with respect is by not talking over or around them. We also need to let them know what we’re going to do in order for them to be prepared for whatever that activity might be. Caregivers also need to acknowledge the children’s feelings. We need to gain the toddlers respect. The best way to gain the toddlers respect is by modeling it. We need to model how they need to act and how to treat others. If the caregivers don’t treat one another with respect the children will be confused as in why they are
