Photo manipulation is the function of image editing techniques to photographs in order to create an illusion or deception through analog or digital means. Its uses, cultural impact, and ethical concerns have made it a subject of interest beyond the technical process and skills involved (Wikepedia). Photo manipulation has been regularly used to deceive or persuade viewers, or for improved story-telling and self-expression. As early as the American Civil War, photographs were published as engravings based on more than one negative (Wikeepedia). I believe that for the sake of representing honest and accurate information, the digital editor should avoid anything that will change the actual event or scene as it was captured by the camera. This includes adding, removing or moving objects in such a way that the context of the event is altered. The digital image editor should be careful to let the photos speak for themselves. So I don’t think it's permissible to alter any aspect of place or time. Since the 1940s political leaders from around the world have been gathering in New York City at the United Nations headquarters to discuss and maintain international peace and security, to safeguard human rights, to promote social and economic progress, to improve living standards, and fight diseases. The United Nations is an international organization whose stated aims are to facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress and human rights issues (Wikepedia). In early September 2000, Fidel Castro and Bill Clinton attended a lunch for the roughly 150 world leaders taking part in the UN summit. They were making their way to a conference room for a group photograph when an encounter took place. Cuban President Fidel Castro spoke for the first time with his US counterpart Bill Clinton and shook his hand. Diplomats and other observers believed it was also the first time since Castro took power in 1959 that the Cuban leader had shaken the hand of an American president. In November 2000, the Daily News ran a cover story about the encounter entitled ‘All Shook Up’. The cover displayed Former President Clinton and Cuban Leader Fidel Castro in the process of shaking hands. Both leaders’ hands are extended towards one another and they appear to be jovial. Fidel Castro did approach Bill Clinton and shake his hand but there were no cameras present which means that the Daily News faked the photo. People who were present at UN summit explained it as a chance encounter. Witnesses said that Clinton and Castro spoke for a few minutes. They also said the two had a cordial conversation but there was no substance. Even though, the Daily News didn’t completely create a false situation of Castro and Clinton meeting, they mislead their readers by running the photo on the cover of the newspaper. I believe that an exceptional photo journalist is honest and exact and if they aren’t there at the right time then they just weren’t meant to get that shot. By creating phony images of events and situations that weren’t captured, you are only betraying your viewers who rely on your paper for the truth. Misinforming your audience can create a domino effect of troublesome situations. Some of the readers of the Daily News could have been anti-Castro activists. This kind of photo could outrage hundreds of people and create mixed sentiment towards the former president. Many anti-Castro activists believe Fidel Castro to be a murderous dictator and a photo like this could depict Clinton to be tolerable of Castro’s actions. A lot of readers may take this kind of photo as another exercise in poor judgment on the part of Bill Clinton.
The Daily News also slightly damaged it’s credibility by placing this photograph on the cover of the paper. Once readers realize that this is a spurious photo they may begin to think that the newspaper has lied about countless things. They may begin to second guess every article and photo in the newspaper. Readers could become infuriated with the editor for allowing such fraudulent behavior to occur. If the Daily News wasn’t resourceful enough to have multiple photographers covering the UN summit event, then it just didn’t deserve the shot. Condescending to a level as low as publishing fake photos demonstrates to me the true character of someone, or in this case a newspaper. Newspapers are supposed to contain the news and important information. If I have to be concerned about something as simple as a photograph, what can I really trust in the newspaper?
Generally speaking, the meeting between Castro and Clinton did take place at the United Nations summit meeting. But, this does not mean that a newspaper can swindle its audience and create a manipulated situation. In this case, the end does justify the means because the paper was trying to illustrate a momentous moment. But, that is exactly what the Daily News exemplified, photo illustration. It is unproblematic to look at the photo and notice that the two have been digitally placed together. They both have different expressions on their faces and their hands look as though they are demonstrating distinct hand shakes. It just doesn’t seem like a photo that naturally took place.
In conclusion, I believe that photojournalism is respectable up until the extent at which photojournalists digitally edit photos. Photojournalism is the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast that creates images in order to tell a news story (Wikepedia). I consider photojournalism an immoral thing when it crosses the line of what is real and what is fake. Staging a photo is a respectable act of photojournalism. In contrast, digitally altering a photo and placing two men like Castro and Clinton in a photo together to me is contrite. Newspapers and photojournalists must acquire a balance of truth and ethics.

Some may not know it, but most of these photos have been edited and retouched. This research paper attempted to determine the majority opinion of what types of photo editing was above the tolerable limit, as well as the public awareness of media manipulation. The different levels of photo editing included changing the contrast, removal of blemishes and dust, addition/removal of objects, and addition/removal of main subjects. The results revealed that most people are aware of photoshopping in the media and they suspected there was more photo editing in magazines and advertisements than newspapers. 3 Chapter 1 In every publication there are most likely photos accompanying articles, advertisements, or exist as an article by themselves. Essay On Photo Manipulation

...grade, I taught myself how to do photo manipulation and enhancement by watching tutorials on YouTube and reading articles for tips and tricks, and eventually got good at it. Although I have learned a whole lot on graphic design and illustration in my four years as an Information Design student, photo manipulation and enhancement has always been my strength. Being part of the creatives team of a school organization and my internship for Styles Entertainment Group allowed me to practice and improve my skill. I want to stay a “creatives person” and I plan on entering the advertising industry. A dilemma one might run into in the industry would be whether it is okay to alter a photo or not. Editing photos challenge one to recognize the difference between ethics, which is the judgement of what is right or wrong, and aesthetics, which is the judgment of personal approval or disapproval based on senses , and choose which to keep among the two. A question that would always be at the back of one’s mind when altering a photo might be “To what extent is it okay to edit a photo for the sake of promoting and advertising”? If we are striving for truth in advertising, should photos even be “doctored” at all? Photo enhancing and manipulation can be used for many things,...

A Brief History of Photo Journalism.

...A brief history of photo journalism Created on: May 28, 2008 Last Updated: August 06, 2008 "A picture is worth a thousand words" should be the motto of the photojournalist. It certainly is what they are all about. Who can ever forget some of the most memorable photos of the 20th century? It was the photo journalist who brought us the horror of the holocaust, the joy of the sailor who returned home and the faces of the world. We have been a part of history through the eyes of a camera lens. Photo-journalism is almost as old as the camera itself. The first photo journalist was Carol Szathmari who did documentary photos of the Crimean War in the 1850's. It was Matthew Brady who really should have the title of Greatest photojournalist of the 19th century. His photos of the Civil War were made into engravings and published in Harpers Weekly. They are no less poignant today than they were when he took them over 150 years ago.He brought to life the main players in the Civil War. If it wasn't for him we would not have seen the care worn face of Abraham Lincoln or the meeting of the great generals. It took until the 1880's for photographs to be published in newspapers. The invention of the flash powder allowed photography to go indoors added a whole new dimension to the ability of the photojournalist to tell his story with pictures. It wasn't until the flash bulb was invented along with the 35mm camera that photojournalism really took off. The period between the 1930's and the......

...Katie Haylor Unit 43 – Social Media for business P1- Explain the range of social media services * Social Networks There are many social networking sites that are used throughout the world. People use them to interact with their friends or family from all around the world. An example of a social network that is commonly used is Facebook, which enables individuals to post pictures and statuses about their lives to show to others. Social networks aren’t only used by the public, but now by businesses also. They include updating your location, sending links and images to each other, exchanging messages, sending and accepting friend requests. I have chosen to focus on two popular and large names within the industry; LinkedIn and Facebook. People use these differently to businesses. Businesses use Facebook to create and organization page, to upload pictures and events on their business products in order to advertise their organization to the people who use these social networks. Organizations found out that is a user likes their profile or page, then their friends will be able to see it and like it also, Amazons Facebook profile for instance, which inclines people to shop at the Amazon website or at least browse. Then this cycle repeats and become more and more known throughout the world as more and more people are liking the page which will make the company more popular and sites like Facebook and Likednl become more aware of it. Other examples of social networking sites......

The Photographic Essay

...give a voice to the photo. Victor Burgin and Ronald Barth have opposing views as to how this occurs. Roland Barth would argue that those words are written or implied, and are put there by the author. Victor Burgin believes that the words are put to the image by the viewer as he examines the photo, and that the images and words will be seen and heard concurrently. In the end, it would be agreed by both, that a reader’s emotions and experiences will guide how they “read” the words of a photograph. Victor Burgin’s idea is that the photo is a “message without a code” (Mitchell 510), and the image and the word are two separate forms of communication. If there is no caption on a photograph, the viewer would inject their own wording based upon on their own life experiences. “A photo is invaded by language the moment it is looked at and becomes an almost relic of the event it portrays.”(Mitchell) A viewer looking at a photo will immediately have thoughts come to mind, and those thoughts become the words of the photo. Roland Barth believes that a photograph has its own language that coexists within it, and he calls this a “photographic paradox” (Mitchell 512). He is saying that there are two messages in every photo: the denotation and the connotation. The denotation is the actual photo in literal form, and the connotation is what is implied or suggested by what is in the images. A photographer could change the message by changing the connotation of the photo. This could be done......

Chiropractic

...Chiropractic Medicine Chiropractic is a very popular alternative medical treatment system. Chiropractors work with various parts of the body to ease pain, correct alignment issues and help provide the support the body needs to naturally heal itself. “The term “chiropractic” combines the Greek words cheir (hand) and praxis (practice) to describe a treatment done by hand.” Chiropractic care is centered around hands on therapy because of adjustments with the spine, the body’s main structure. According to research and the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) cost data report, in 2007 chiropractic care was one of the most exercised form of complementary health practices. Over 18 million adults and 2 million children had expedited chiropractic medicine in a year’s time. With that being said, one of the main problems people have deal with lower back pain. However, chiropractic medicine is also used for sports injuries, job related injuries, pain management and natural relaxation. Not only is chiropractic services less invasive, but is also less expensive and nerve racking. For example, a patient with chronic lower back pain could benefit more from the chiropractic field rather than surgery or medication. The high risks and chances of improvement with surgical procedures vary with the patient. Also the time it can take to fully recover after a major surgery could be even more strenuous. Chiropractic care, in my opinion, should be ones first step to recovery because it......

Knuckle Cracking Research Paper

...Knuckle Cracking Have you ever had the urge to crack your knuckles? This “bad” habit has long been thought of as a contributor to joint trouble, particularly arthritis. Even though the mechanisms behind it aren't perfectly clear, research suggests habitual knuckle cracking is not a significant risk factor for arthritis, though it may have several other negative side effects (Kevin DeWeber, 2011). Though the exact mechanisms behind knuckle cracking are still debated, that popping sound is likely not from bone-on-bone contact. To keep them working smoothly, most joints are surrounded by a membrane filled with lubricating fluid and gases. When a joint is “cracked” an event called articular release occurs where the gases are thought to escape the membrane, causing the characteristic “pop!” sound associated with knuckle cracking (R., 1995). The same workings lie behind the “cracking” associated with fingers, wrists, ankles, and necks (R., 1995). Despite joint cracking being normal and fairly common throughout the body, knuckle cracking in particular has long been blamed as a contributor to painful arthritis. However research suggests habitual knuckle cracking isn't forceful enough to cause the wear and tear associated with arthritis (MARINA G. PROTAPAPAS, 2002) (Kevin DeWeber, 2011) (Jorge Castellanos). In fact, knuckle cracking might actually cause temporary relief in joint pain and reduce symptoms of arthritis, hence the popularity of such practices among chiropractors ......

Advertisment

...In the world of advertisement the way the way words are used to describe products can be very misleading and it is the key to advertisement deception. For the past few days I have been watching commercials, and have seen these deceptive commercials in the advertisement industry.  These commercials mislead people into thinking that these products are “wonder products” and these products will do everything they claim it says it will do.           Recently, I was watching television and caught the new Roc Multi Correxion Cream, and it stated that it has five Anti Age Actions that will help moisturize the skin and make wrinkles disappear.  What exactly are Anti Age Actions and how can they “dramatically” make someone look younger? The name of the product uses Correxion instead of Correction.  This implies that it is not guaranteed to work so that’s why they spelled it differently.   In addition, the little slogan or jingle says it corrects what aging you but doesn’t spell it out.  It implies it is correcting you so it sounds like the name of the product.             On another occasion I caught the AT&T commercial for the Iphone 3gs, and it states “the phone that changed everything”, but what did it really change if anything, except the price of the phone and the monthly bill costs.  What could this phone possibly have changed; in the commercial they were very broad about that part.  AT&T said they made the phone that changed everything even more amazing because not it was......
