Photography

Photography is undoubtedly one of the most important inventions in history -- it has truly transformed how people conceive of the world. Now we can "see" all sorts of things that are actually many miles -- and years -- away from us. Photography lets us capture moments in time and preserve them for years to come
Today, photography is characterized by a rapid growth in the development of technology and ideas. Each year, millions of pictures are taken and an astonishing array of new films, cameras and imaging systems enter the market. One of the great attractions of the photography field is the ease with which basic skills can be learned.
The word ‘photography’ comes from the Greek term ‘drawing with light’. Without light there is no photograph. Photography is about seeing, balancing and interpreting the light.

Composition of Photography
The Camera: The materials that are usually used in creating a camera are metal, glass, plastic, wood, and mirrors.

The Film:
Collodion: This substance transformed photography. This a viscous mixture of gun cotton that is dissolved in alcohol that then creates a thin film. It is then mixed with silver bromide, silver iodide or silver chloride. This substance reduced exposure time to seconds instead of hours.

Film: The first type of camera film was produced when the collodion was combined with celluloid, a flexible plastic. This film started to be sold with “Kodak” in 1889 along with the worlds first box camera.
Chemicals of Photography

Developer: This substance is what causes the silver iodide on the roll of film to darken as if it has been exposed to the light. Developer is made out of two solutions.

Solution A: 50 ml of water, 1 gram of sodium sulfite, 0.16 grams of hydroquinone, 4.6 grams of sodium carbonate, and 1.1 gram of phenidone.

Solution B: 50 ml of water and 8 grams of sodium sulfite

Stop bath: This substance completely stops the development process
Stop bath is made out of acetic acid but many people just use water in lieu of stop bath to reduce the cost.

Fixer: This substance removes all of undeveloped silver iodide from the emulsion
Modern fixers are usually made out of sodium thiosulfate or ammonium thiosulfate

How to Produce a Photo
Film photography photos are produced in dark rooms by burning the picture on light sensitive paper and then putting it through a series of chemicals to fully develop them. The photos are taken on cameras that have light sensitive film running through the back of them, behind the adjustable glass lens.

Method

Developing Film into Negatives
Collect all equipment and materials and place them on the bench in the darkroom. Ensure that you have all the parts of the tank, cassette cap remover, reel, scissors and exposed film. Make sure that you are comfortable and know where everything is, then turn out the light so that you are in complete darkness. If you do not have access to a darkroom you can use a black bag or a very dark cupboard.
In complete darkness, pick up the film and film cassette opener. Using the opener, pry open one end of the film cassette.
Take the film out of the cassette and hold onto it tightly with one hand. With the other hand pick up the reel and find the two lugs, which indicate the entry to the reel.
Carefully pull the start of the film through the opening of the reel. Continue pulling it through until it is about halfway around the reel.
You may now let go of the film. Place a hand on either side of the reel and rotate your hands back and forth about three to five centimetres at a time. This will wind the film onto the reel. Placing your thumbs on the lugs of the reel will help keep it on track.
When all the film is on the reel you will feel the end of the film, which is attached to a small plastic spool. Using the scissors, cut off the spool and wind on the remaining small section of film.
Place the loaded reel onto the centre support and into the tank, ensuring that the lid is secure. You may now turn the lights on.
Process your Film
Set up the materials and equipment that you will need. There is a variety of brand names and different types of chemicals available. It is therefore important that you know which type of chemicals you are using. In the space provided, record the information so that you are aware of how to use each chemical.
The role of film developer is to develop the negative image onto the film. The type of film you use, particularly the brand and ISO, has a direct influence on the required developing time. Developing times can change quite dramatically from one type of film to the next, therefore it is important to use the for your film type and ISO. If you are required to mix the chemical with water, always ensure that the water is the correct temperature before pouring in the chemical.
When you have mixed the developer and ensured that it is the correct temperature, pour it into the tank, place the cap on to the lid and agitate it (gently rock the tank upside down and back again) for about 5 seconds every 30 seconds. When the developer has been in the tank for the required amount of time, take off the cap and pour it out.
The role of the stop bath is to stop the action of the developer and neutralise the film in readiness for the third chemical, the fixer. When you have ensured that the stop bath is correctly mixed, pour it into the tank, put the cap on the required time. Then take off the cap and pour it out.
The film fixer makes the negatives images permanent.
When you have mixed the fixer and ensured that it is the correct temperature, pour it into the tank. Put the cap on and agitate it for 5 seconds every 30 seconds, for the required time. Take off the cap and pour out the fixer. Some fixers can be refused, so check to see if you can pour the fixer back into the bottle and not down the sink.
On completing the chemical process, use water to wash any remaining chemicals from the film. You may do this by placing it under running water for 7 minutes.
Take the lid off the tank and retrieve the film reel. Very carefully pull the exposed edge of the film away from the reel. Be careful not to put your fingers anywhere except on the edges of the film. Hang your film to dry.
When the film is dry cut it into strips of about 5 or 6 negatives and place them in a plastic negative file.

Discussion

The word Photography comes from two Greek words “photos” which mean light and “graphein” which means to draw. Photographs are made through light or radiant energy recording a picture of an object or scene on a light-sensitive surface

Formerly, photography was satisfied with straightforwardanalouge cameras which make less clearer photos and much harder to repeat, while in todays society and times, cameras have advanced to a progressed time where pictures are adequately traded, transferred, duplicated and modified through an advanced means of digital editing, for instance, photoshop. With simple techniques anyone can turn a dull image to an image only picasso could create, editing images can lead to endless possibilities.

...CHAPTER ONE CAMERA OBSCURA A camera obscura was one of the most important devices ever created in the world of photography. It is an optical device that led to the camera. A camera obscura consists of a box or room with a hole in one side. Light from an external scene passes through the hole and strikes a surface inside, where it is reproduced, rotated 180 degrees upside-down, but with color and perspective contained. The image can be projected onto paper, and can then be traced to produce a highly accurate representation. Did you know he largest camera obscura in the world is on Constitution Hill in Aberystwyth, Wales? The first surviving mention of some of the principles behind the pinhole camera or camera obscura belongs to Mozi who lived 470 to 390 BCE. Mozi was a Chinese philosopher and the founder of Mohism. He correctly asserted that the image in a camera obscura is flipped upside down because light travels in straight lines from its source. His disciples developed this into a minor theory of optics. The Greek philosopher Aristotle lived from 384 to 322 BCE, understood the optical principle of the pinhole camera. Aristotle viewed the crescent shape of a partially eclipsed sun projected on the ground through the holes in a sieve and through the gaps between the leaves of a plane tree. In the 4th century, Greek scholar Theon of Alexandria observed that "candlelight passing through a pinhole will create an illuminated spot on a screen that is directly in line...

...To me, photography is a way to capture a moment in time. Fancy equipment is not necessary to take wonderful images. Learning to see like the camera sees and knowing your internal vision are much more important than expensive equipment to photography. Most important is that you have the desire to take great images and be willing to learn. My name is Mahmood. I’m Bahraini and I was born in 1992. I started my first photography experience when I was twelve or thirteen years old using my friend’s camera and my first photo was my nephew’s portrait. My first camera that I bought with the own money was Nikon D40. Somehow photography became the joy of my life. Photography is fantasy that I can never have enough of it. I am so touched by photography that I started learning it using you tube and internet site. In other words, I am self-taught. Photography is my calling and hopefully one day would be my profession, and the thing that will undoubtedly drive me insane someday. I don’t photograph subjects. I photograph the way they make me feel. Admittedly, it’s a bit of a strange concept. But it’s honest – and it’s the best way to describe my approach to the craft. I wrestle with every image I shoot. I assume perfection is possible and I want to squeeze it out of every picture. If that’s all you ever know about me, it’s enough to say you know me very, very well. Though, currently I am studying interior design, I am always thinking about photography. As I grow older, my personal taste is...

The Coin of Photography

...Flipping The Coin of Photography Before, I tell you about what I am going to write, first and foremost I would like you all to imagine two situations. The first is suppose you enter an old palace, what do you expect to find. Well, you are sure to have a glimpse of numerous paintings hung on the gorgeous walls depicting portraits of glorious emperors and his beautiful wives, or certain scenes of importance being depicted on the walls. Any genuine person would call the palace and its adored paintings, a work of art and rather be mesmerised by the antiquity. Now, the second situation is somewhat we all are acquainted with. What do you expect to find as you enter the house of a popular film star. Well you are luckily you are going to see numerous photographs of stars being framed and hung on the wall. You can also find a good deal of landscape photographs in any modern household. Well, now the question arises. Will you call this house a patron of art? This is where the ambiguity arises. It has been almost 180 years now, and still innumerable critics have been raging a battle among themselves on whether to consider photography as an art. Well, I am no critic, neither I am any artist or photographer. I am what you all are, a layman. And I will try to analyse things from layman’s point of view. So, being impartial, standing on the vulnerable bisector dividing the two forms, I would like to establish art with photography. How do we describe art? Art is a form of media be it painting...

Photography as Art

...“Is photography art?” may appear to be a seemingly irrelevant question today. In our culture we are not only surrounded by media and marketing images for consumers. Camera images also function as decoration, provide spiritual enrichment, and give us insight into the past and present. In the years following the discovery of photography, however, this medium was criticized and critiqued while trying to be recognized as a form of artistic expression in a period dominated by painting. Similar to painters, photographers can approach their photographs in a variety of ways, transforming them from mere “careless snapshots” into beautiful, original pieces of work. The Seven Last Words, by F. Holland day is considered one of the most important images in the history of photography. This piece contains iconic religious and spiritual importance which influenced subsequent artists significantly. The monumental self-portrait depicts Day as Christ in a series of seven platinum prints set in a frame designed by the artist. In order to prepare for his self-portraits Day starved himself, grew out his beard, and imported cloth and a cross from Syria. It is without question that Day’s depiction of Christ is unsettling and full of emotion as he portrays Jesus speaking out his last words. His images are soft and painterly-like, blurring the visible line between painting and photography. Many individuals may have difficulty distinguishing the two. His dramatic use of lighting can also be compared...

The Benefits of Photography

...The Benefits of Photography Photography allows those that work in the criminal justice to capture the scene. Whether it is a horrendous crime scene or recreating a car accident it gives us a glance at what once was. It can enhance what was taken to see things that were not seen to the naked eye. It also allows those that are working the scene to get a better understanding of what happened. When working a crime scene you have to preserve the evidence. That means that often things are time sensitive and unless you have a photogenic memory you will need a way to show you what was where. This is so important because it assist in recording the crime scene. Taking notes, video recording and taking photographs of the scene assist through the entire case. Pictures that are taken at a crime scene can and will be brought into trial to help either sides explain what happened. When taking pictures of a crime scene you have to imagine that you are creating a puzzle that will have to be put back together later. That means the entrance, exit, and corners need to be captured. Once the outline has been captured the evidence and where the evidence was found needs to be taken, at different angles and different exposures it also needs to be measured as the pictures are being taken. If there are things that you are unsure about that you may feel like it is important take the picture, it may be a breakthrough for the case. ...The Future of Photography Over the last 150 or so years that photography has been in our lives, it didn’t undergo much change until twenty years ago. While film sizes and developing techniques had minor changes, it wasn’t until the 80′s when the first glimmer of the future of photography started to appear with auto-focus camera’s and faster frames per seconds. Then digital came and has forever changed our lives. I do see many changes in the future, some may come to be, and some may be just too far-fetched, however, anything is possible. I see in camera HDR, unlimited ISO, simulated grain, 3g equipped cameras, GPS equipped cameras, and Polaroid film comes back to life, universal batteries, even, the everything lens. High dynamic range photography has been more of a curse then a blessing as most photographers see it. Most over-use the ability and create more art images compared with a true photography, layering and layering until what they have more closely resembles a digitally created image, not a photograph. If a camera can have the ability to do HDR on the fly, in camera it could open up the door for better, more equally exposed images. High end DSLRs now seem to be able to shoot in near total darkness, however the blacks still tend to go green in hue. Working towards better chips that don’t get as hot will lead to better night images without flash.
