Stage | Age | Description | Sensorimotor Stage | Birth to Two Years | This is the first stage of Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. In this stage an infant’s understanding about the world happens trough their five senses. The sensory term in the Sensorimotor Stage indicates how important senses are to this stage. Through sight, smell, and touch, etc., the baby is able to learn and discover the world. The term motor in the Sensorimotor Stage points out that the infant learns mostly through muscle movements. In this stage the infant lacks ability to grasp object performance. This can be observed when one hides a toy with which they play. He or she immediately loses interest. Therefore, what is out of sight is also out of a baby’s mind. In addition, the baby has no capacity for any symbolic representations (Martinez, 2010). The task a baby can perform in this stage is crawling to an object and trying to manipulate it. Most likely, objects that are very bright and shiny are of most interest. | Preoperational Stage | Two to Seven Years | This is the second stage, where children begin to format concepts. An increased independence is indicative in this stage. Object performance is mastered in this stage, which helps him or her to know that even if a toy disappears, it still does exist. However, the most important development during this stage is the one of language. This development helps him or her to describe important things such as other people, their feelings, and events. Even though his or her thinking is much more advanced when compared to the previous stage, it is still far from an adult. A K-W-L chart is an example of a graphic organizer. It is broken up into three columns label K, W, and L. This chart is used to list what the students already know, what they want to know, and what they learned at the end of the unit. This graphic organizer activates the students’ prior knowledge and gets them thinking about the topic and what they want to know. ...Craving 03/13/2014 This graph portrays the craving of people depending on the kind of substance they receive in a certain phase of the study. Heroin tops the charts, while heroin antagonist drops the graph to the bottom. As we have discussed before in class, craving tends to be highest when people are actively administering the certain substance, which can explain the Heroin phase and its high craving rate. As people move over to the methadone phase, there will be far less high involved, and thus people will lose some of their craving. The chart then will drop further with the drug free phase. However, the craving rate rises slightly again during the antagonist and heroin and antagonist phases, only to plummet down again. Considering antagonist blocks heroin receptors and feels ‘bad’, it is understandable that the antagonist phase has a brief spike in craving rise before plummeting again. The interesting part is the heroin and antagonist phase, where the graph is far too low compared to the heroin phase.
