Ebp Scip Measures

...Standardization of Nursing Protocol for Cardiac Arterial Bypass Patients Abstract Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is an important factor in determining medical courses of action. Nurses have long used tradition rather than evidence in making decisions about beside care; to convince them to switch practice, it is useful to draw a comparison between the efficacy of these disparate routes. Our study designed a research question based on the PICOT model for the cardiac floors and designed procedures using the Kotter and Cohen’s Model of Change. In order to study the effect discussed in our PICOT question, a web search was conducted and the quality of each pertinent study reviewed. Introduction In the nursing staff of an adult Cardiac Surgical Care unit, how does the buy-in from the staff for Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) changes in a new Coronary Arterial Bypass Graft (CABG) pathway affect the decreases in infection rate among this patient population when compared to the old way of delivering patient care through nursing tradition in a six month time frame? The formation of a guideline for practice in nursing is not a new occurrence; books and manuals have been a reality for many years. However, in the past these resources lacked the evidence for standards of care, which traditionally have been based on professional consensus and tradition. The Joint Commission has recognized processes that can be measured regarding patient outcomes and care in order to meet standards for Medicare...

Reducing Falls

...Effects of Physical Restraints in Reducing Falls PICOT paper Larisa Myers Nova Southeastern University Effects of Physical Restraints in Reducing Falls Physical restraints are described as equipment attached to a patient’s body that limits movement. Physical restraints are commonly used in an adult medical facility to prevent patient’s falls or injuries, interference with clinical therapies, and protect patient from harming themselves or others (Kope et al., 2012). However, there is great debate whether or not physical restraints prevent falls. Evidence-based research can be used to expedite the recognition of adults at risks for physical restraints use and assists nurses to find alternative methods (Kope et al., 2012). Background Physical restraints are a common practice in industrialized countries (Kope et al., 2010). Older adults, who are confused, psychotic, and demented, have the greatest risk for being restrained in medical facilities (Kope et al., 2012). Physical restraints include hand mitts, waist belts, and wrist restraints to prevent body movements. The most common misconception among nurses is that restraints prevent falls or injuries (Kope et al., 2012). Data Bases and Key Terms The data base used to research effects of physical restraints in reducing injuries was CINAHL. The...

The Fall of the Ottoman Empire & Its Impact on the Middle East

...war resulted in the destruction of the empires, particularly the Ottoman Empire and Austria-Hungary Empire. The dissolution of the Ottoman Empire allowed many Middle East countries to be self-governed, while the West such as Great Britain and France had more interest in Europe than in the Middle East enabled the former to play a dominant role of colonization in the region. This seeded confrontation between two different civilizations, resulting in chaos later and to a large extent helping shape the Middle East in today's world. This paper attempts to examine this history arguing how the Ottoman Empire declined and eventually dissolved at the end of WWI. It shows that the internal problems of the Empire, such as its backward political and economic system, failed to compete with the increasing influence of the Western European countries, whose government was more efficient and more industrialized than the former, in the Middle East. The paper starts with a discussion of the contemporary situation in the Empire, and then deals with the problems that led to the conflicts between the Ottoman Empire and the European powers over the Middle East during WWI. It finally analyzes how the defeat of the Ottomans and the increasing British and French dominance in the Middle East laid the ground for today's conflicts in the region between the Arabic states and the Jewish nation, which is supported by the West. Since 1600s the Ottoman Empire had controlled a large territory extended from...

Such changes have led to organizational restructurings and implied rethinking of leadership functions and practices. Changing organizational structures, from traditional hierarchical towards lower and more flexible ones, have made leaders organize work in new ways. Teams account for one new way of organizing work and reaching organizational goals. Likewise, globalized markets have made leaders search for new solutions to meet the needs of customers. In consequence, organizations strive for competitive advantages through downsizing, subcontracting, joint ventures, strategic alliances, and other collaborative and network-based alternatives which are typically facilitated by virtual teams. Virtual teams are geographically and organizationally dispersed teams that function over time zones. Due to such dispersion, physical contact in virtual teams is reduced or lacking altogether which means that collaboration is enabled by IT-solutions...

From what I have learnt in the past few weeks, they are all far more present than I had realized. We see it in schools, justice system, job market etc. In the next few pages I will explain how they correlate in Canada today. More specifically relating to aboriginals and Muslims. Canada is home to more than 200 ethnic groups, with 16% of its population (over five million individuals) identifying as a visible minority. Information from the Census showed that Canada’s visible minority population grew 27% from 2001 to 2006, five times faster than the population as a whole. The diversity of Canada’s population is expected to continue to increase over the next two decades. According to projections by Statistics Canada up to 14.4 million Canadians (or about one-third of the population) will be members of a visible minority by 2031. The religious composition of the country is also changing, with some of the largest...

Quantitative Article Critique

...Critique of Colella & Gejerman’s Study “Survivorship Health Information Counseling for Patients with Prostate Cancer” Laura Laughbaum, SN Lake Superior State University Abstract This paper is an academic critique of an article written by Colella and Gejerman (2013) titled: “Survivorship Health Information Counseling for Patients with Prostate Cancer.” The authors undertook a research study to examine whether specialized discharge education counseling increased prostate cancer patients satisfaction with their care and education related to their chronic health problems after radiation therapy. My examination systematically focuses on specific aspects of the article in terms of process and validity of research methods and results. I have attempted to develop a cohesive and unified explanation which not only expounds the particulars of the research but which also formulates a clear interpretation of that research throughout. I suggest that the lack of communication of the researchers in this article about their methods of sample selecting and data analysis greatly reduces the validity and generalizability of their findings. Caring for Caregivers: Movie Review "Amour"

...Caregivers of Dementia patients Vascular dementia is the second most common form of dementia after Alzheimer’s disease. Caused by problematic supply of blood to the brain, symptoms include challenging communication, depression and anxiety, strokes, physical weakness or paralysis, confusion, changes in behaviour and difficulties in walking and unsteadiness. This paper discusses the problems faced by caregivers of patients suffering from vascular dementia who are above the age of 65 and possible recommendations to improve their plight through the review of the movie, Amour (a movie about an octogenarian couple, Georges and Anne, where Anne develops vascular dementia) and current literature pertaining to the topic. Georges “Put yourself in my place. Didn’t you ever think it could happen to me, too? Anne: “Of course I did. But imagination and reality have little in common.” Anne’s sudden speech arrest and frozen stare at the breakfast table with no recollection afterward are the first signs of a partial seizure. Caregivers, like Georges, who are not prepared for looking after patients are under pressure because of their increasing needs. Georges does not seem to mind this responsibility of taking care of her initially, but Anne’s condition deteriorates fast. She experiences profound right sided weakness and is bound to the wheelchair. Georges struggles to lift her from the wheelchair and make her sit on a chair or go the bathroom. Increased stress in his behaviour is...

...long range planning Long Range Planning 34 (2001) 357-381 www.lrpjournal.com Success Factors of Strategic Alliances in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises—An Empirical Survey Werner H. Hoffmann and Roman Schlosser Strategic alliances are increasingly gaining favour over go-it-alone strategies for organisations to achieve fast and economical growth. This study aims to identify critical success factors in alliance-making with special consideration given to the specific situation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A comprehensive questionnaire was used to interview a random sample of key executives in 164 Austrian SMEs. This paper reports on the results of that empirical survey, and seeks to identify the weights of various success factors in alliance-making in SMEs. The results show that “soft” facts such as trust are important for alliance success, but not on their own sufficient. Also “hard” facts such as strategic compatibility and appropriate governance mechanisms have an important influence on alliance success. Careful strategic planning and good partnership preparation are essential for alliance success, but the full value of an alliance has to be developed as it evolves. k 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
