Butterfly Affect

...How to pimp a butterfly. Listen to Kendrick Love Marvin. Hope well. You’ll recall that To Pimp a Butterfly leaked just 24 hours before its official release date, March 15, and that most major music websites published their reviews of the album within three days of the leak. On such an immediate deadline for filing a feature-length album review, it’s nearly impossible for a young critic to stunt. At Jezebel, Clover Hope just wrote the truth. With bits of personal and political context interspersed, Hope framed her review as a first-take impression of the “overwhelming blackness” of an album about funk and self-destruction. “This initial feeling is suffocating,” Hope wrote. “It’s the essence of Dis Tew Much.” I think most fans and critics would agree that Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly is, indeed, overwhelming. I reviewed To Pimp a Butterfly in about 72 hours. In that narrow band of time, I "got" the album's messages and themes but couldn’t grasp the motivations for the album’s sound. Why, in. Sex Trafficking Research Paper

...The word, according to Andrea J. Nichols, originated back in the 1600s to define an individual who coordinated the sale of sex for his own profit. Shared Hope International claims that almost all prostituted minors have pimps who profit from and manage them (Schauer). Pimps also perceive the sex economy as a low-risk enterprise with a high-reward through reported “incomes from $5,000 to $32,833 a week” (Withers). In the sex industry, modes of exploitation and oppression by pimps typically involve acts of abuse, degradation, and violence against women (“Sex”). This usually involves young people - mostly women - who have left home, after having been abused as a child, and are addicted to drugs (“Sex”). This hard life and background often lead women to the romanticized idea that pimps can save them from their past, which causes them to eventually end up in the violent control of a pimp. This is exemplified by Meghan Casserly’s interview with Rachel Lloyd that directly brings to light the glorification of pimping done by favorite rappers that serve to romanticize pimps for thirteen-year-old girls with how they can be “cute and handsome” men who “pay attention.” In pop culture, the word pimp means “really cool” with achieving a high level of success (Nichols). Overall, Nichols states how the word signifies images of wealth, power, and respect through the management of girls and women who sell sex for profit. However, Nichols takes notice of how...

Prostitution

...racism, etc.” Prostitution and drugs go hand and hand. Most prostitutes use drugs to numb themselves in order to continue working from all the physical and mental pain. Others turn to prostitution as a last resort to score drug and money for an ongoing drug habit. While prostitution is still a choice, troubled women find it is an easy path to escape to. Prostitution should not be legalized because it promotes domestic abuse and drugs associated with the profession. Legalization will bring more power to the predators. Brothels are an example of legal prostitution. In the article “Nevada’s Legal Brothels Are…”, Stella Marr a former sex worker in a brothel states, “People think that legal brothels will protect the women in prostitution from pimps and johns. They are mistaken.” According to the same article women who are sex workers in the brothels explain how it feels like a prison, with high security fencing,...

How Does Martin Amis Subvert Morality in Time's Arrow

...How does Amis subvert morality in chapter 2 Morality is the distinction between right and wrong. It is the determination of what should be done and what should not be done. Morals deal with behaviours as well as motives. Tod's morality is questioned when polar opposition is reverded for example good is evil, wrong is right and guilt is innocence. Amis does this to make the reader question on their views on morality and describe what is seen to be wrong or evil to them as something good and innocence. This links to the how Amis describes the holocaust as an ironic and humorous thing to ridicule the nazi ideology and how it was ironic as the they set out to create the perfect race and make the Germany a better place by committing genocide because in their eyes they went against their idea of the perfect race, and doing this meant exterminating millions of jews and were doing the right thing. Amis explores the theme of morality through his use of temporal inversion as this allows him to reverse ideas of morality. In chapter 2 he reverses ideas of right and wrong. We can see this when he discusses the rape of women in the ‘crisis centres’ describing the perpetrator as “the men who suddenly heal them”. The word ‘heal’ implies that the men are heroes and take them away from a life of sadness which is problematic for a reader as it reverses the idea of right and wrong as it describes the men as the innocence and sinless and the women as weak and fragile. Also it says how “there's...

The Worlds Oldest Profession

...life of prostituted women is very physical. Their job is to perform sexual acts to please the customer’s sexual desires. They encounter extreme violence such as being robbed, beaten, tortured, rape by one or, gang raped by 2 or more and sometimes murdered. Can you imagine being burned with a cigarette, punched in the head with a closed fist, having a black eye, hair pulled or your eardrum damaged? The sad part about it is the pimp and the customers think the prostituted women are fair game for this type of treatment. According to the Council for Prostitution Alternatives in Portland, Oregon in 1991, 78% of prostituted women were raped: Mostly by their pimps and customers. In a year’s time, they are horribly beaten by their pimps about 58 times and 1 to 400 times by their customers. Can you believe that? The second area I would like to touch upon is the verbal and emotional abuse of the prostituted women. On a daily basis, they are called every name except the “Child of God.” They are constantly reminded that they are worthless because their pimp is the one who makes her who she is. That...

The Plight of Young Girls Living as Teenage Prostitutes

... 2009 Shorter College Professor Ashley Robbins Abstract In recent years there has been a surge in the number of young girls living as teenage prostitutes. The average age of a teenage prostitute today is 13 years old, and this problem has hit communities from the impoverished to the upper middle class. The lure into prostitution has captured girls that are runaways from broken homes, as well as those who suffered emotional and sexual abuse. Although these girls are offenders, they are first victims; thus causing advocates, social workers, and policy makers to unite to establish prevention programs and provide help to those girls living as prostitutes under the hands of men who represent themselves as their pimp a way of escape. Teenage prostitution is a problem in our community that many have failed to look at the severity of its growing presence. The number of girls living a life of prostitution has greatly increased over the last few years and is now beginning to draw local and national attention. The numbers and tragic stories of these young girls lured into this lifestyle for various reasons are beginning to cause society to stop and take notice. Girls as young as eleven years of age are being forced into a lifestyle of prostitution as a means for survival. In order to begin to work on addressing the problem of teen prostitution, it is important to understand the dynamics of this cycle of lifestyle choice...

Sociological Theories on Prostitution

...A theory is defined as “a coherent group of tested general propositions, commonly regarded as correct, that can be used as principles of explanation and prediction for a class of phenomena.” There are three major theories that sociologists use when viewing social life: Structural Functionalism, Conflict Theory, and Symbolic Interactionism. I will offer a brief explanation of each theory and apply each one of these theories to prostitution. Structural Functionalism focuses on viewing society as a whole, instead of on a smaller level. The theory views social life as having many smaller parts that all work together. It is studied at the macro-level. For example, think of a fire pump. The goal of a fire pump is plain and simple – to save lives. There are many parts within the pump that must work together to make it work properly. The speed increaser/pump transmission, the impeller shaft assembly, and the pump body all play very important roles in the flow of water through the pump and into the discharge hose for firefighting operations. The structure represents how all parts of society fit together to make the whole and the function represents each smaller part and how it works together. There are two different kind of functions to consider when studying structural functionalism. The first is manifest functions. Manifest functions are beneficial consequences of a social process that are intentional and obvious. The second is latent functions. Latent functions are beneficial...

Time to Legalize the World’s Oldest Profession

...Time to Legalize the World’s Oldest Profession Prostitution is the act of offering sexual services to another person in return for money. Prostitution is often referred to as the world’s oldest profession and has existed in the sex industry for centuries occurring all over the world. Since prostitution first began the debate has raged: should prostitution be legalized or not? To protect the safety of sex trade workers, the time has come to legalize prostitution. A major argument for legalizing prostitution is the questionable logic of criminalizing an activity that occurs routinely in our society. The services of a prostitute are used regularly by many people. According to Doctor Allan Schwartz, four main reasons that men visit prostitutes are a “compulsive need for sex, an insatiable need for sexual pleasure, a fear of intimacy or relationships, and misogyny” (Schwartz). These reasons for using the services of prostitutes have existed for a long period of time and the demand for paid sex will always exist. In many segments of society paying for sex is acceptable. History has proven that eliminating prostitution is not possible. Decriminalizing the sex trade will recognize prostitutions role in our society. Prostitution is generally an act between consenting adults and different categories include street, brothels, escorts and sex tourism. According to Sherry F. Colb of Rutgers Law School, prostitution is classified as a victimless crime. She states “What makes prostitution...

Rhetorical Analysis

...Essay #2 In the article Child Prostitutes: Criminals or Victims? By Susan L. Pollet she talks about child prostitution in the state of New York and how they need to change their laws and the way they handle child prostitutes. Pollet talks about how there isn’t a federal law for prostitution and how the minors involved in prostitution aren’t criminals, but victims in some cases. Pollet did a great job in this article by hitting all the main points that she would need to discuss to make this article a good piece to analyze. Pollet does a great job of giving background information on this subject, since most people who probably read this article aren’t living in the state of New York. In the part of her article titled background Pollet gives statistics on prostitution in the state of New York and its largest city NYC. Pollet uses the statistic that “The New York Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) estimates that there are 2,500 youth engaged in commercialized sex in New York City.” Pollet is then able to give us some laws that are in place now that help in stopping prostitution, but are the reasons that children are continuing to work in prostitution. I like how Pollet tells you all the laws that are in place against prostitution because it gives you knowledge about the subject and gives Pollet credibility. The next part of her article Pollet talks about the Services and Protection that are there now and need to be put in place to help these youth that are being...

Prostitution the Oldest Profession in the World

...Kier McCall-Ward English 201B Ms. Wilson November 20, 2013 Prostitution the World’s Oldest Profession In the article “From the Streets to the ‘World’s Best Mom’” written by Nicholas D. Kristof the issue of prostitution is discussed. His article features a woman named Sheila Faye Simpkins and her experience. The article focused on three specific things needed for these women to get out of that life: 1) Residential Recovery Programs, 2) Employment, and 3) Cracking down on pimps and johns. In my essay I will focus on these three points, but I will also include some of my own opinions and personal experiences of being a former prostitute. Sheila Simpkins started prostituting at the age of fourteen years old and has been arrested over 200 times. In the article Ms. Simpkins discussed her life as a prostitute and the role her pimp played in her life. The program that was eventually able to begin to change her life was a two year program called Magdalene residential recovery. In this program she was able to take her life back and learn skills to start over. The services offered at Magdalene are substance abuse, employment training, medical and dental, therapy, and various other services. In San Francisco there is a program called the Sage project that has been around since 2002 helping victims of human trafficking. When I was involved in this lifestyle I did not know about these kinds of programs, maybe if I had I would have gotten out sooner. These types of programs are...
