While college students a couple of brothers, Frank and Dan Carney, borrowed $600 from their mother to purchase some kind of secondhand equipment. They rented a small building on in their hometown Wichita, Kansas and opened the doors of first Pizza Hut in 1958. A year later, the company incorporated and opened the their first franchise in Topeka.
By 1966, Pizza Hut established a large home office in Wichita to help oversee the 145 Pizza Hut franchise restaurants that were established.

It didn't take long for Pizza Hut to become the No. 1 pizza restaurant chain in the world. In 1971, only 13 years after the Carney brothers started their first Pizza Hut, Pizza Hut became the world's most successful pizza restaurant in terms of sales as well as in the number of restaurants around the world.
Pizza Hut has aggressively sought out franchise owners. It has made itself more attractive to franchise owners is by aligning itself with other restaurants such as Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Long John Silvers (ultimately all becoming a part of the Yum! Franchising group).
One of the more unique items of note, Pizza Hut sets itself apart from a lot of its competitors because it allows Franchisee's autonomy in deciding some of the items they will carry on their menus such as
being free to use different kinds of toppings from different suppliers. While there are differences in ingredients, the basic elements in each pizza are the same. This allows consumers to get the familiar taste they love, but also allows franchise owners to branch out.

The Paper

...CASE STUDIES PIZZA HUT INDIA Overview Launch of a New Pizza Crust - Freshizza Create awareness for the introduction of the new pizza crust ‘Freshizza’, highlighting FRESHNESS of the dough as a key ingredient for a perfect pizza. Situation Analysis Each Pizza Hut restaurant prepares fresh dough several times a day on premise, unlike competing brands whose stores receive crusts from a few central commissaries making the dough older by 1- 2 days. This fact had not been leveraged by Pizza Hut in the past. In the course of product development, Pizza Hut had commissioned research to evaluate the proposition of ‘Fresh’ among consumer focus groups. The key findings here revealed that ‘Freshness’ in the context of Indian bread (chappati’s) implied kneading fresh dough daily. Consumers preferred chappati’s made from freshly kneaded dough as they were softer and tastier than those made from two day old dough. This was unlike the perception on pizza’s where ‘Freshness’ was only understood as a piping hot pizza. Strategy The PR programme decided to use both the insights gained from the commissioned research, to present an all new pizza crust and focus on leveraging editorial opportunities to create awareness for freshness and differentiate the product on taste. In order to add credibility to product claims and influence media on the freshness of the product, PR Pundit considered it vital to get a leading food critique to endorse the product. Through dialogue and product sampling...

In 1968, the company entered the international market with a store in Canada. The following year stores opened in Australia, Mexico and Germany. In 1977, Pepsico, leader in the snack and beverage industry acquired Pizza Hut, initiating its entrance into the restaurant industry.
