IV. SUMMARY/CONTENT
VILLAR FOUNDATION
The waste plastic factory was our first stop. The Villar Foundation and the local community are in charge of collecting and segregating the plastic wastes, which are then shredded, washed, dried, melted and molded in the plant. The Villar Foundation aims this kind of project not just to clean and protect the environment but to provide livelihood to the poor. They can produce 1000 armchairs in a month.
About 24 kilos of mixed soft plastics such as those used as food wrappers are needed to make a chair, which can be fashioned to look like wooden pieces and comes with replaceable parts. Amazingly, the chairs made up of plastics could last up to 20 years.

From the coconut husk that the vendors gave to the foundation the fiber can be extracted through a decorticating machine, the decorticated coconut will be air dried, then the fiber and the dust will be separated through dusting, the fiber will be twined and lastly they’ll weave it to make a coco net.

To lessen the waste Las Pinas produces the Villar Foundation also started a project to turn wet waste into soil conditioners and Vermicompost through composting. The process is to mix wet waste, mostly food with coconut dust and trichodema fungi that produces enzymes that helps in composting.

Another problem they encountered in cleaning the river was the water hyacinths also known as water lilies that floats on the river and traps more wastes and causes flood when it rains. They found a solution by transforming water lilies into beautiful pieces of arts like decorations and baskets.

GARDENIA FACTORY

After we watched a short video presentation about Gardenia we were whisked off to the fully automated production area for the plant tour.

As we move along, this machine cuts and divides the dough into round shapes. This ensures that all bread weights the same and note that this is done by an automated machine and not by human hands. There's actually a sensor that double-checks if all dough gets the same volume. After which, the dough will be placed in a rectangular pan and baked to perfection.

After which, the dough will be placed in a rectangular pan and baked to perfection.

After the bread is baked, they're taken for a spin at the colossal cooling towers. That's a whole lot of bread up there because the Gardenia plant produces a whopping 6,000 loaves an hour. The bread definitely comes out piping hot after baking and it gets transmitted to this cooling cylinder to lower its temperature.

By this time, the bread is almost ready to be consumed but, of course, it had to be sliced equally and packed properly. In this machine, the special G-Lock is also attached which is unique to Gardenia only. These plastic locks are color-coordinated depending on the day of its production which helps consumers easily identify and ensure the freshness of the bread.

After the breads were properly packed, the last stop is the Distribution Center where the freshly baked Gardenia breads gets stored and later on sent to its distributors all over the country. At present, Gardenia has 150 trucks in its fleet.

...Rawson World Literature Assignment 1 An analysis of the role of minor characters in The Visit and Chronicle of a Death Foretold in establishing a collectivistic or individualistic society. March 13, 2011 Word Count: 1073 Rawson 1 Without any characters; there is no story. Every tale needs a knight in shining armor to save the endangered princess or a misguided hero to meet a tragic end. A protagonist and an antagonist are the most basic of writing conventions and are crucial to the story. It is important; however, to not overlook the roles of minor characters in the plot. For example, Snow White would have been a radically different story without the seven dwarves. This exemplifies how minor characters can drastically influence the outcome of a story in a number of ways. In both Durrenmatt’s The Visit and Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the minor characters have an influential role in determining the fate of the protagonist. These minor characters are used by Durrenmatt and Marquez to establish an individualistic or collectivistic society within their works and by doing so isolate the protagonists and lead them to their deaths. In a collectivistic society, the people tend to view themselves as part of a group and hold the needs of the group over that of the individual. This is the society which Durrenmatt has presented in The Visit. In Durrenmatt’s The Visit, the town of Guellen is populated by minor characters lacking any names. Throughout the play...

Us Demin Plant Visit

...The Plant Exterior Located in the outskirts of Lahore at Raiwind Industrial Area, the sister concerns’ US Denim & US Apparel Plant Facilities were constructed in 2005 and are extremely well-maintained, above traditional industry standards. The grounds are large and aesthetically designed so that each factory building is surrounded by greenery. This makes sense as in case of future expansion, the new buildings can be constructed on the parklands. The car park is situated right at the entrance and although plant workers do not park vehicles there, this is more because of the fact that they are all availing transportation facilities provided by the company rather than because they are not allowed to park in the area. However, other non-management staffs such as executives in administration, and marketing etc. do park their cars in this vicinity. What we found impressive about the plant is that the buildings and grounds are well-labelled – each building has been named, warning signs are posted from place to place and there is a gathering point in case of emergency. Manufacturing US Denim makes different kinds of denim fabric while US Apparrel makes denim stiched denim clothing, both of which change depending upon customer requirements. Owing to this variability in fulfilling customer demands, the fabric is manufactured and/or stitched in customer-wise batches, whereby the production process is started separately for each customer. The layout of the plant floor at...

Wriston Manufacturing

... The Detroit plant of the Heavy Equipment Division is the central source of concern in the operations of the Automotive Supplier Group, primarily because of the following reasons :- * The plant has been producing only a residue of low-volume products. * Product variety has been incredibly high with two lines of products with their own families and models. * Although visibility is low in the company as a whole, the Detroit plant has a higher visibility due to the existence of the servicing facility for the company’s three product lines and the potential visits of customers who came to the head office which was situated in Detroit. The usual implications of the above combination are high job repetition, less systemization and high unit costs. The main reason for low profits out of the products in Detroit is a high total overhead burden rate (highest among all the plants in the group). On top of that, the development of the layout of the plant has been completely unplanned and haphazard, leading to deficiencies in the electrical system, water and fire sprinkler systems, and more importantly, storage and machine layouts. Continued production with high overburden costs would only lead to very low investment on the plant (as investment on a plant is currently dependant on the plant’s return on assets) and in turn, poor motivation levels and performances of the employees in the plant. Recommendations – With 60%...

Pgp Company Case

...Company The PGP Company was a large concern making many types of consumer products. It had six plants spread around the country. Their purchasing procedures had never been completely coordinated. In fact, the head office of the company had encouraged each of the plant managers to operate with their staffs as separate independent units in most matters. In 2005, when it began to appear that the company would face increasing difficulty in securing essential raw materials, Mr. Seth, the CEO, recruited an experienced purchasing executive, Mr. Ghosh, as VP in charge of purchasing—a position especially created for him. Mr. Seth gave Mr. Ghosh wide latitude in organizing his job, and assigned Mr. Murthy (who had served the company in various capacities for many years, and knew most of the plant executives personally) as his assistant. Mr. Ghosh’s appointment was announced through the formal channels usual in the company, including the house magazine. One of Mr. Ghosh’s first decisions was to begin immediately to centralize the company’s purchasing procedure. As a first step he decided that he would require each of the executives who handled purchasing in the individual plants to clear with the head office all purchase contracts which they made in excess of Rs. 1 lakh. He felt that if the head office was to do any coordinating in a way that was helpful to each plant and the company as a whole, he must be notified that the contracts were being prepared at least a week...

...assignment I decided to research and write about the Tropical Rainforest. I have always found the world’s rainforests to be very interesting with all of their secrets they hold inside of them. By doing this paper it will allow me to discover more in-depth information on the Tropical Rainforests. I wonder what all I will discover? There are many rainforests in the world but can be found only in three major geographical areas around the world. The one that stands out the most to me is the Tropical Rainforest in Central America in the Amazon Basin from the previous assignment I researched. Others are located in Africa, Australia, and Assam to name a few. Tropical Rainforests are made up of large trees, exotic wildlife, and thousands of species of plants. The structure of the Tropical Rainforest is very complex but can be simple to understand when broken down into sections. The rainforest can be divided into layers from top to bottom and can get a better understanding of the Tropical Rainforest as a whole. The different layers are: emergent, the canopy, the understory, and the leaf litter or cryptoshere or also known as the ground. Emergent are the larger, taller trees that stick out above the canopy. They can be 20-100 feet above the canopy and endures strong winds, temperature fluctuations, and damaging solar radiation. The canopy is the level under the emergent that has billions of leaves that converts sunlight into energy called photosynthesis. The canopy is where vast amounts of fruits...

Michigan Manufacturing Corporation

...Corporation: The Pontiac Plant Submitted on 12th July 2013 Submitted by Group 13 Nikhil Majhi 1111045 Overview of Michigan Manufacturing Corporation: Michigan Manufacturing Corporation's Heavy Equipment Division (HED), headquartered in Pontiac is a large scale manufacturer of axles (both on-highway and off-highway applications) and brakes. The division has been underperforming and has been under the corporate radar regarding its long term alignment with the company’s long term business strategy. As of 1987, the division has 9 plants operating on-stream, and 1 (Fremont) under construction. The complexity of the products manufactured could be measured based on 3 categories: i. Product line (on-highway axles, off-highway axles, and brakes), ii. Product families, and iii. Product model. The Pontiac plant operates two product lines. It manufactures the low volume product families that include parts for new products and replacement parts for all old products to support its past customers. Based on the corporate strategy, it had been decided that as the demand for a new product being manufactured at Pontiac grows, the production shall be transferred to a new plant having requisite economies of scale and available capacity. As of 1987, the key factors that possibly have contributed to underperformance at the Pontiac plant are: • Investment: Due...

Coastal Dunes

...The dune starts with wind that moves the sand. The wind moves it into piles just like a snow drift. The sand will build up on itself layer upon layer. Each new wind can make the dune larger and each new pile of sand can grow into a huge dune. Sand dunes form around stuff on the beach like rocks, drift wood and stuff that washes up on the beach during high tide. Inside sand dunes there are plant roots, which hold the sand together. This helps protect the sand dune from being destroyed. A dune holds the sand on the beach to help cut down erosion. Dunes are very important, without them the beaches would disappear. Coastal sand dunes can be found in North Carolina, South Carolina, Massachusetts, Maryland, Florida, Georgia and Texas. Dunes on the Georgia coast normally grow 10 to 12 feet tall and can be found all along Georgia’s barrier islands. These Dunes and islands have protected Georgia from the ocean tide. Plants are an important part of a dune. Plants that are on the fore dune must be able to take salt sprays, strong winds and burial by blowing sand. Plants like sea rocket, beach croton and Russian thistle grow here. On top of the dunes grass such as salt meadow cord grass, bitter panic grass and drop seed grass grow. The rear dune will have larger shrub type growth with deeper roots and dense dune mats that hold the dune together. Behind the dunes will be trees ad forests which are protected from the sea. ...
