I especially like the sponge idea when you soak it and swipe it on the page. Pen and Ink was used in Rembrandt’s Cottage among Trees (6.11) in Getlein’s text. He used different kinds of pens to draw varied lines in the painting. My favorite material from the Painting media would have to be Fresco. The process of using Fresco is interesting. It is using pigments that are mixed with water and applying them to a wet lime plaster support. When the plaster dries, the lime undergoes a chemical transformation and fuses the pigment with the plaster surface. Fresco is used in the Mixtec Culture by Diego Rivera. From the Print media, my favorite the woodcut. I find it very creative to draw a desired image on a block of wood, and creating all sorts of works of art with it. The earliest surviving woodcut image was made in China in 868 C.E. which portrayed Buddha preaching at the Diamond Sutra (Getlein 8.2). From the Sculpture media, my favorite is material is blocks of material and cuts used for carving. For one thing, it is evident that Thomas Springer did work outside, most likely agricultural and lumber work. He has both a large amount of supplies intended for work outside, including crowbars, axes, and plows, as well as a large portion of agricultural and lumber goods, such as potatoes, cider, and wood. Not only this, but it is noticeable that he has more boots than he has drawers. The fact that he would have more boots than underwear shws that he certainly has a great need for boots, a need which would be justified by daily outdoor agricultural work. Although it is obvious that a good portion of this man’s day and his income is determined by outdoor work, it is also evident that his time is not entirely dominated by such work. It is listed that he has “a lot of books”. It can be assumed that if Springer had no time remaining outside of his agricultural work, then he would be unable to have time to read and thus be unlikely to accumulate many books. Therefore Springer most likely has spare time outside of working, which he is able to use for leisure. ...annoyance because you know a solution as soon as you find the issue. A problem is when you uncover a potential issue, and you don't know how to fix it. Yesterday I had an issue. The stairs are missing 4 balusters, and I need more balusters to reinforce the railing at the top of the stairs. The balusters in landing are spaced about every 12". They should be about every 4.5". I took one of the balusters to HD and of course, they don't match. Instead of buying around 25 balusters, it looks like I'll be buying 50-60 of them. This was an issue because I knew the solution. I just didn't like it because it costs more, and takes more time. Today was different. Today I found a problem. As we were demo'ing the back bedroom we removed the drywall, plaster, lath, and trim from the back wall. Below the window we noticed the wood didn't look right. After poking around a bit I came to the conclusion we had termites. Not good. I'm not sure if they are still there, but I'll research this tonight. The termites ate some of the framing supporting the window. This explains why the upper sash of the window was broken... I wish the termites stopped at this. They didn't. They have eaten the main transverse support that is supporting the 5' overhang off the back of the house. This is a real problem. I have a few ideas of how to fix this, but it all involves more work than I expected. Hopefully I can come up with a solution we can fix from the inside. ...Upon visiting the Newport Art Museum in Newport, Rhode Island, there was a variety of different artworks. One painting that caught my eye was of the many works created by William Trost Richards that I selected is the “Guernsey Cliffs, Channel Islands”. The painting uses color, style, and structure to visually represent his image with the water that is the focus of his piece as well as the surroundings of it. He uses a blending of two styles in his painting of dramatic and detailed illustration. There is a dramatic image of the rough water hitting the rocks with some dark clouds in the background. The colors are warm and vivid. In this oil seascape, he is able to catch the expression of the gentle but yet rough motion of the water. There is a mixture of the calm and cloudy atmosphere. The use of different shades of color in the sky makes the image look more realistic. The oil produces a shine and enhances the liveness of the colors. The brushstrokes are visible and rough that gives off a vibrant feeling and brings the painting to life. It can be noticed that this illustration is painted and drawn with power and also the skill. William Trost Richards, an American, was born in 1833 and died in 1905. He created this oil painting in 1899, which can be found at the Newport Art Museum that was given as a gift from Willard Clinton Warren II and Timothy Matlack Warren, grandnephews of the artist and other members of the Warren family. It was a pivotal period in which farming, technology and human culture made very significant advances. There are many important settlements from this period, and one of the most significant is the site known as Çatalhöyük. Çatalhöyük, meaning “mound at the fork” in Turkish, is located in South Central Turkey, a region known by many as Anatolia. Çatalhöyük is now a large mound covering thirty-two acres and reaches sixty feet at its highest point. The people of Çatalhöyük built houses out of mud brick and would knock them down and rebuild over many years. This rebuilding would accumulate land higher and higher, thus the mound. The site’s layers, representing each “city”, are numbered from the top, 0, to the bottom, X. The oldest level has been dated to about 6500 B.C. The mound was first excavated in 1958 by British archaeologist James Mellaart, and after over thirty years the excavations are being led by fellow Englishman Ian Hodder. The discoveries made by Mellaart and Hodder, as well as their interpretations, shed light on what the people of Çatalhöyük were like. ...wire with Kathryn’s work gave me inspiration in bending the wire to whatever shape and design I wanted to create. I figured out that wire would be a good link to my chosen necklace. Deciding to use organic shapes and materials, I decided to focus on shapes of bones. I used card to specify the basic shape. Then I decided to wrap around wire to give it a tighter shape. Then using the technique of ‘dry brushing’ I painted the section of bone that I wrapped wire around. Then focusing on the texture of bone, I decided to try put plaster on to add a bony texture to it. The plaster was successful, especially after dry brushing paint on to add colour, it made the piece look like bone. Dry brushing was something I hadn’t done before; this was something that my teacher recommended after hearing about my idea. I was exploring how to represent the bones in different ways, I first used only wire, then I used cardboard and wire, then I used cardboard wire and plaster to finish off the look I was going for.
