THE PROCESS OF GENERATION OF POWER AT CAPTIVE
POWER PLANT, CPP
The basic energy conversion scheme in a thermal power plant is
Chemical energyHeat energyMechanical energyElectrical energy (fuel) (boiler) (turbine) (generator)
Electrical Energy is generated by eight (8) no's of identical Units each comprising of a Boiler, Turbine, Generator& associated Auxiliaries.
Based on the Modified Rankin Cycle, the Process converts the chemical energy of coal into thermal & then to kinetic energy, which is in turn converted to Electrical energy.
The vertical , single drum, natural circulation, tangentially fired,
Balanced Draught, Dry Bottom type boiler of 430 T/hr capacity (for
U# 7 & 8, the capacity is 395 T/Hrs) utilises the energy available to it by combustion of coal. Five pressurised Bowl Mills are provided in each Unit for pulverising the coal fed to their respective bunkers by
Coal Handling Plant (CHP) .The coal from Pulverisers is conveyed to the boilers by pressurised air supplied by 2 nos. of PA Fans. Oil from
FOPH is used as supporting fuel during start-up, shut down & flame stabilisation. The required combustion air is supplied by means of 2 no's of FD fans while the products of combustion are drawn out by 2 nos. of ID Fans to maintain a balanced draft in the Furnace. As the flue gas comes in contact with the water walls & steam tubes & coils of the boiler, heat transfer takes place and superheated steam is
generated.
