Benefits of Parent and Tot play gyms in Mount pleasant Community

I chose to explore the benefits of “Parent and Tot” play gyms in my community. Acting as a social network for parents and children, play gyms offer a positive social environment to play, learn, and converse with peers. Play gyms are a fun space for children to play and be physically active. Lastly with the ever increasing housing costs, children have limited space to play as larger places become more expensive. Therefore, play gyms have an overall positive affect on toddlers and adults alike promoting physical, emotional, and social well-being while keeping costs to a minimum. Healthy child development is an essential determinant of health because of the longterm effects on the rest of a child's life. Having a healthy upbringing can influence choices later on in life to prevent obesity, increase activity, and create a foundation for social skills. Parent-Tot programs deal with many of the determinants of health that are outside the scope of the health care system. A child's social support networks are just as important as maintaining their physical exercise. These play gyms are great for learning social skills, for instance children learn how to take turns, and exercise patients. Play gyms also allow other adults to interact with each other. Social support networks for the entire family are important to allow parents to be the best they can be for their children. Perry et. Al ( 2014) states “Support from families and friends and from informal and formal groups can provide practical aid during times of crisis and emotional support in times of distress and change.”( p.7) Building a strong community can directly influence how the parents can support themselves but also their children. Enabling community participation and involvement for parents and children, play gyms offer great support socially as well as physically Toddlers are typically considered to be active; nevertheless childhood obesity is on the rise. Therefore, participation in recreation and physical activity, is a significant influence in reversing the uprising of childhood obesity. Halvorsons(2011) indicates : “Physical activity should be encouraged from birth, particularly through floor- based play and safe water- based activities. Activities that involve crawling and rolling on the floor are recommended, as well as parent and baby swim lessons. ” (p.1)
Physical activity is integral for not only a child’s health, but also influences their lives later by creating habits of good health. Halversons(2011) guidelines “Reflect a growing awareness that early life experiences impact future health outcomes,”.(p1) Play gyms allows children to develop an active imagination, engages families together in physical activity and hopefully will create good habits for the children to be more physically active in the present and future. The affordability of housing in Vancouver is ever on the rise, forcing families to live in smaller spaces, and have less independent space to play. According to Ergler (2013) “Reduced independent mobility then potentially impacts negatively on children's current and future health and well-being.”(p.4). Having access to these gyms is inexpensive, offering recreation areas for families without space or who have low income. The impact of having community resources such as play gyms is beneficial for promoting health and creating an opportunity for children to have a healthy child development. Play gyms offered in a community are promoting well-being by allowing children to express themselves physically and actively while learning imperative social skills. Play gyms offer an inexpensive and healthy social network for parents and children to interact with, and allow child bonding.

Importance of Socialisation

...prepare them to interact with other children and adults as they grow. Socialization alone can move a child from having a dramatic experience when being left with a care giver to a more pleasant one. Not only does the child benefit from this, but the parents do as well. Often parents feel that since their child does not react well to other that they are confined to home without a night out or a play date with another family. This simply is not true. A child can and should become acquainted with other children, extended family (if possible), and eventually a care giver or baby sitter. This can soften the blow to the child and parents when the later must leave for work, a leisurely night out, or a to run errands. So, what is socialization exactly? Psychology books point out that child socialization is the introduction of new people, places, and things into the child's repertoire of daily life. Instead of staying at home everyday and playing with your child alone, it is important to introduce other children in the form of play dates, play groups, or other activities. There are a number of community activities that take place at local libraries, gyms, schools, parks, etc, that provide ample time and resources for socializing your child. There are even community groups that provide a means for parents to meet other parents and children in their area. Additionally, child...

...qualitative research, it is possible to identify the religiousness of weightlifting. Blazer (2012) correlates sports and religion, stating that sports are considered a religion when the definitions are of: communities, creed, code and cultuses. Similarly, Woodhead (2011) offers a comprehensive definition of religion by breaking it down to five categories: culture, identity, relationship, practice and power. Both sports and religion have concerns, social systems, traditions, symbols and gather communities together (Stuhlsatz, 1994). Blazer's (2012) explanation of communities: as groups of people either formally or informally bound together by the creed, code and cultus they share, specifically represents Woodhead's (2011) culture definition of religion on the basis of beliefs, meaning, values, tradition and ideology. Blazer's (2012) perspective of religion is of an organized community bounded by rules, rituals and understanding of human perfection, arguing that organized sports have the same...

Childhood Obesity

...childhood obesity has many factors to it, but what percentage of it is due to parents allowing their children to become a product of their environment? The imbalance of caloric intake with actual calories used for growth, development, metabolism, and physical activity is one of many factors involving childhood obesity (Karnik, Kanekar, 2011). Genetics play a part, by altering body fat content and absorption of energy. “Heritability of obesity from parents also influences obesity in children.” (Karnik, Kanekar, 2011). The behavioral factor of childhood obesity is directly correlated to lack of physical activity. A lot of children spend a great deal of their time indoors watching television, playing video games and being on the computer. Television advertisements related to unhealthy snack foods contributes to a child’s choice for unhealthy, eating behaviors and obesity. Cigarette Smoke

...an additional 38,000 deaths are caused by second hand smoke” (DiPlacido 1). This stat makes tobacco the number one preventable cause of death in the United States. Throughout my paper I am going to examine the effects tobacco has on the individual, the effects of second hand smoke, and discuss how quitting may be difficult. Following my examination of tobaccos dangers I will explain a solution that will help limit tobacco users as well give aid for those who are trying to quit the use of tobacco. We all know that tobacco smoke contains chemicals but do we know what these chemicals are and what they can do? The one chemical that people are familiar with is Nicotine. Nicotine is an extremely addictive ingredient of cigarettes. Nicotine plays the part of getting users “hooked”. Although nicotine is a dangerous chemical used in cigarettes there are a number of other chemicals to watch out for. The American Lung Association concluded, “Cigarette smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals, 69 of which are known to cause cancer” (General Smoking Facts 1). That alone should be enough to keep people from using but it doesn’t. Another alarming statistic is that “smoking is directly responsible for approximately 90 percent of lung cancer deaths” (General Smoking Facts 1). Lung cancer is a popular form of cancer and for 90 percent of lung cancer deaths to be associated with smoking is a scary number. Maybe...

Community Recreation

...Community and Recreation: Community Recreation Community The Merriam- Webster (2012) defines community as a unified body of individuals with common interests living in a particular area. A community is also a local grouping within which people carry out a full round of life activities. Although families or other groups can sometimes be relatively self-sufficient, most of them do not live in isolation. For many reasons, ranging from economic interdependence to shared cultural values, families and other groups normally join together to form communities. The community, rather than the family, becomes the social setting for most everyday economic, political, religious, educational, recreational and similar activities. As communities become larger and more complex, other types of organizations are often established within the community to perform these various functions. Thus, a community is a type of social organization that is territorially located and provides the setting for dealing with most of the needs and problems of daily living. Communities vary widely in size and complexity. Recreation McLean and Hurd., (2011) defines recreation as a network of public agencies that provide such facilities as parks, playgrounds, aquatic centers, sports fields, and community centers in thousand of cities, towns, and countries. Recreation is also defined as any activity performed during one’s leisure or free time. Recreation is very essential element of human biology...
