Play Review Of Calisto's 'The Illusion'

As I watched The Illusion I knew what was going to happen at the end. I knew that Calisto would not be dead even though he was killed. I knew that he was living in Paris as a theater actor. Since I read the book first I understood the play much better. Reading the book was challenging. The book was confusing because scenes kept changing as well as the names of the characters. I could not understand how one person could be three different characters. As I watched the play I could see how each scene changed the name of a person but the actor was the same. It made it easier to follow one actor throughout name changes. In the book, as new scenes happened the names were changed and I had to find out which character from the previous scene played the character now. It was really hard to follow every actors character because they played so many. …show more content…
In the play these characters were women, except Matamore, who was played by a woman but still considered a man. I think if they kept the characters’ male, it would have made a stronger play. I think it would have had more meaning. While reading the book I saw Pridamante as being harsh and demanding to Alcandre. He would do anything to find his son. In the play I saw Pridamante as being a more passive person when talking to Alcandre. She was more caring and sympathetic to her son while watching him fall in love, and being killed. I think Matamore should have been played by a male because he was still portrayed as a male. His costume was more feminine in the play than I picture him wearing in the book. The costume was purple and blue, which are colors I represent as more feminine. I pictured him wearing greens and browns. Matamore was more feminine in the play than I thought he was in the
