...How gaming has an impact on society: Gamming has a very powerful effect on society as we know it today most people think gamers are recluse that stay inside all day, are obese and have no social interaction what so ever. But not all gamers are like this some of us are sophisticated and have lives rather than not talking to anyone. What people say about the gaming industry and about gamers are wrong most of the time. Some of these are just plain wrong. Gamers and violence: Ever since a violent game has been around there have been people who are trying to put them down and cause controversy over the amount of violence in the video games. The papers have blamed many accidents caused by children or teenagers on them being able to play violent games. Many of these include, anger from call of duty competitiveness as well as more dangerous ones like shooting and robbing shops due to some effects of gta (grand theft auto) .These are of course due to speculation the papers have no proof that this is the case they say that games are the problem when they are not the problem it is mostly due to the fact that the children have access to a gun in the first place or their parents our bringing them up in a rough way or getting peer pressured into doing theses certain acts. This is a prime example of the papers speculating: The study is called “violent video games do not cause teens to become aggressive” ‘An 8-year-old in Louisiana shot and killed his grandmother. The incident...

Video Games

...------------------------------------------------- The Impact of Video Games on Children Video games have been available to consumers for the last 30 years. They are a unique form of entertainment, because they encourage players to become a part of the game's script. Today's sophisticated video games require players to pay constant attention to the game, rather than passively watching a movie. This has both positive and negative impacts on players. Several studies have been published that explore these impacts on today's children. Sections: * What impact does playing video games have on children or adolescents? * Tips on managing your child's media consumption * The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) * References What impact does playing video games have on children or adolescents? The most widely used "positive" impact video games are said to have on children is that they may improve a player's manual dexterity and computer literacy. Ever-improving technology also provides players with better graphics that give a more "realistic" virtual playing experience. This quality makes the video game industry a powerful force in many adolescent lives. However, numerous studies show that video games, especially ones with violent content, make teens more aggressive. Part of the increase in aggressive behavior is linked to the amount of time children are allowed to play video games. In one study by Walsh (2000), a majority of teens admitted that their parents do not impose...

Studies on productivity provided ideas as to how to design our own study, while the studies on work breaks gave us an idea of how merely not working for a segment would affect our study. This would mean that we could have a clear idea of the effect of the games themselves rather than merely the break. Foreign Literature A paper made by Thomas M. Connollya, Elizabeth A. Adolescent Sleep Needs and Problems

...Sleep Patterns The Effect of Presleep Video-Game Playing on Adolescent Sleep journal article suggests that playing a video game before bedtime has a small effect on the sleep of older male teens. The study involved thirteen male participants between the ages of 14 and 18 who were good sleepers, which was defined as falling asleep in less than 15 minutes. They were “evening types” who did not have excessive daytime sleepiness and had no identifiable sleep disorders (Weaver, Gradisar, Dohnt, Lovato & Douglas, 2010). Participants completed a seven-day sleep diary for the week prior to their initial testing night. This information was used for the testing conditions so that participants attempted to sleep at their typical bedtime. The study was conducted at Flinders University Sleep Research Laboratory. There, participants sat in a bed beneath the covers with electrodes attached and lights dimmed for both testing conditions: active video gaming and passive DVD watching. During the experimental condition, the participants played a Sony PlayStation 3 video game called “Call of Duty 4: Modern Welfare” for either 50 or 150 minutes on two different nights. During the control condition, the participants spent the same amount of time watching a documentary called “March of the Penguins”. Data showed that eleven adolescents took longer to fall asleep after playing the video game than after watching the documentary, while two of them fell asleep faster. Seven teens reported that they...

Television and Children

...concern over the effect of television on children has gripped the nation. Studies have shown that today’s shows on television have a negative effect on the social behavior on children, causing them, among other things, to be more hostile toward others, and interact less with others. While in the past, cartoons could have been an easy target by parents and other watchdogs on this issue, these days, other types of shows and programming have been culprits as well. The suggested solutions on how to remedy this stem from parents connecting with their children. As the saying goes, easy to say, but hard to do. In today’s busy world, parents often miss how big a presence television is in their children’s live. According to the University of Michigan Health System, “television viewing among kids is at an eight year high” (Boyse, 2010, para. 6). Children spend an average of 32 hours a week in front of the television, collectively from watching movies, playing videogames, or just watching shows on TV. As their parents get busier with work, children spend more time finding ways to entertain themselves, and the most obvious choice is the TV. Television executives are aware of this, of course, and today many shows are being geared toward babies and toddlers as opposed to past generations, making television the number one teacher in the early lives of these young ones. According to Jerry Odland (2004), “young children are spending more time watching television, playing video games, or interacting...

Media Violence

...violence can cause viewers to be more aggressive. Violence is the groundwork of many films, TV shows, and TV movies. Violence on screen is usually referred to as ‘action’. In a lot of cases, violence drives the story line. Rape, murder, or crime is used to begin a plot. If violence is the reason for the beginning of a story, there is usually more violence to come. There is an extraordinary amount of violence in media today because producers believe that it keeps audiences interested. TV violence rarely has consequences. There is a lot of fighting, but none of the main characters seem to get hurt. Only the characters that are less important die and when they do no one seems to care. TV violence rarely shows the real life consequences of violence such as physical handicaps and emotional costs. Children copy behavior they see in the media. If they watch TV programs that don’t show consequences of violence they may start to think that violence doesn’t cause serious harm. Children under the age of four are unable to distinguish between fact and fantasy and may see violence as an everyday occurrence if they are used to seeing it on TV. While violence on TV seems to be able to make a large impact on young children this doesn’t seem to be the case for teens that play violent video games. It is easy to think that playing a video game that involves shooting, stabbing, and blowing people up could make the player have aggressive behavior. According to federal crime statistics, the rate of juvenile...

Throughout the years there have been numerous studies to try to prove that gaming was either beneficial or harmful to children and later to adults. There are skills that can be advanced with the right exposure and restraint to video games. There are some risks involved with lifelong gaming. As adults there are long term damages and ill-effects that can occur. One of the major points in this argument of whether video gaming is favorable is the exposure to violence. The effects overall prove that controlled game play can enhance the players’ lives. Playing video games at a young age has its downfalls and rewards. Research has shown that children who participate in playing video games have to undertake unique activities. This includes increasing their hand-eye coordination and pushing players to improve their coordination skills. (Matthew Anton http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=67460656&trk=tab_pro Webmaster / Internet Marketer).
