...matter what the cost to her relationship with her fiancé Mike. Lenny on the other hand, seems to be the lower-powered person using seduction to try and charm or trick his mother into going along with what he wants. Marie uses avoidance and destructive competition instead of resolving the matter in a more collaborative or accommodating way. While Mike wants to engage in conflict to resolve the matter, Marie wants to protect her son by avoiding it, no matter what the cost to their relationship. Marie’s preference for engaging or avoiding Mike can develop into a rigid style, and when this happens, constructive conflict becomes very difficult according to Wilmot and Hocker. Every time the issue of her son defying the rules and doing as he pleases comes up, Marie and Mike will have to reach some type of an agreement on the “avoidance/engagement”, or this metaconflict will override any other emerging issues (Wilmot & Hocker)”. Marie uses avoidance to sidestep the issue by withdrawing from the issue and destructive competition through personal criticism when she tells Mike; “Real punishment? How would you know? You never had children. What do you know about being a parent? You never even call your own mother.” (Case Study) This competitive tactic can often damage a relationship. It “locks the participants into round-robin sequences of attack on each other, and deprives the participants of cooperative solutions to their problems (Wilmot & Hocker)”. According to Brockriede (1972)...

Anthology 1

...Anthology 1 The opening song for the first anthology sets a good mood for continuing with the video. “My Life” is a very moving song that portrays the love the Beatles’ members had for each other and how they always stuck together. The line, “But of all these friends and lovers, there is no one compares with you” stuck out to me most and just shows how much all of them cared for each other and cherished the times they had together. In the beginning they described each of their childhoods and what their young life was like. It was difficult to decipher which voice belonged to which band member, but I was able to figure it out. Each of them had a very different life growing up. John was raised by his aunt after his parents split up when he was young. His mother visited him often and taught him to play the banjo and then the guitar. Paul was born in Liverpool and his mother was a nurse and midwife. He traded in his harmonica for a guitar so he would be able to sing and play at the same time. George lived down the road from Paul in Liverpool and his father was a bus driver. When he was 13 or 14, George was fascinated with guitars and would always draw different designs of guitars. Ringo lived in Liverpool with his father who was a cake baker. He became ill at a young age with appendicitis causing him to fall behind in school. At 13, Ringo bought his first base drum. It was interesting to me to learn about the different lives each of them had growing up and to know they weren’t all...

...INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND ON ECONOMIC GROWTH Overview and Summary The International Monetary Fund is an intergovernmental organization that oversees the global financial system by taking part in the macroeconomic policies of its established members, in particular those with an impact on exchange rates and the balance of payments. This organization has just recently downgraded its economic outlook for the United States and Europe through the end of the year. Originally, the International Monetary Fund had expected the United States to grow at around 2.5 percent to 2.7 percent. Instead, its outlook decreased this growth in 2011 to around 1.5 percent and 1.8 percent in 2012. For Europe, the International Monetary Fund lowered its projection of economic growth from 2 percent to 1.6 percent this year and 1.7 percent in 2012 to 1.1 percent. The reason for this decrease in its economic growth projections is due to events on the political plain. Over the summer, the United States congress increased its debt ceiling without effectively implementing strong policies to decrease its deficit. President Obama has proposed $3 trillion in tax increases and spending cuts over the next ten years. This proposal is going to be considered by a congressional panel which has been charged with finding at least $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction. Any proposal that has been presented to raise revenue has also been met with stiff resistance from the Republican Party. This has also impeded progress...

New Ideas traces the development of the study of economics, focusing one by one on many of the most influential economic thinkers of the Modern Era. Buchholz’s historical approach makes this a useful bridge between your study of history over the last few years and the study of economics. Please read Chapters 1, 2, 4, 9 and 10. I’ve selected these chapters as the ones that are most in sync with the early part of the AP Econ curriculum. Feel free to read the other chapters if you’re feeling ambitious; you might especially enjoy Chapter 3 on Malthus, Chapter 6 on Marx and/or Chapter 11 on Public Choice Theory. The questions that follow below will guide your reading and help you to process the ideas of some notable economists. Answer the questions that follow and hand them in on the first day of class. You will also take a test during the first week of school on the reading. Please note that a poor grade on the test will invite closer scrutiny of your written response to the study questions. You may not consult with other students, past or present, in answering these questions. Any evidence of cheating will result in a grade of zero for all parties involved. Due date: Tuesday, September 2rd(first day of school) Study questions: 1. In Chapter 1, Buchholz discusses the role of models in...

Family Time Please

...Today’s generation is filled with constant access to web browsing, social networking, social media, IPads, IPods, and Iphones. With all of these constantly upgrading, convenient ways to connect, our current generation is becoming more and more reliant on technology. Almost all Americans have access to the internet. Families spend more time networking with each other, and connecting by posting on each other’s walls, viewing pictures, and listing each other as relatives. We are a web-based generation, who is to the point where we barely even have verbal conversation with one another. Is this the way to go, or is a more simple, nostalgic lifestyle change a necessity for future generations? What is left for our future children? Should we, as Americans learn to limit our use of technology, and take a lesson from our parents, and grandparents? Currently, the divorce rate in America is over 50%. Does this seem like a coincidence? Children are being raised in single-parent households, or are being toted back and forth between parents, on a weekly basis. Is the reliance on technology playing a role in the reason that relationships are falling apart? Maybe it’s time to take a step back, and re-learn the important factor in creating successful relationships; family time. There are many traditions which were practiced in previous generations’ households, which are either rarely practiced now, or even non-existent; among these, are family dinners. Having dinner with one’s family...
