The hairs on the back of my neck began to prickle, my stomach began to tighten, and I could feel sweat forming on my forehead, as Carol one of the volunteers, began to give me a brief history of the lighthouse and describe the resident ghost.

Point Lookout in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, located on a split of land between the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River. Is one of the most haunted sites in Maryland, and maybe the United States. Here numerous disasters have taken place. It was once the location of a Civil War era hospital, a resort hotel destroyed by fire, and many shipwrecks off its sandy beaches. All of which suggest wandering spirits and paranormal happenings.

In 1612, John Smith landed at Point Lookout and established a small

Although they were likely inspired by market concerns of a double-dip recession in the U.S. and threats of contagion stemming from the eurozone debt crisis, analysts may have underestimated the earnings power of U.S. companies. The Valuation and Risk Strategies (VRS) research team continues to expect slow GDP growth in 2011. As we said in the previous issue of the Lookout Report, if third-quarter earnings exceed analyst expectations--as they have for the past two years--we think the case for growth over recession will solidify. Heading into the third quarter, the Capital IQ mean estimate for S&P 500 companies declined sharply, with growth forecasts dropping from 17% at the beginning of the calendar quarter to 12.8% on Oct. 10, the day before Alcoa Inc.'s earnings unofficially launched...

Law Enforcement Today

...Law Enforcement Today Paper Chelsea Berry Foundations of the Criminal Justice System June 2, 2013 Gary Lair Many police departments are facing budget problems, forcing them to cut their police force down. Many officers are being asked to do things they normally don't do such as patrolling. Police departments are also facing increasing crimes due to the poor economy. More people are engaging in criminal activities. Local and small agencies interact with the communities that they patrol on a daily basis. Sharing information between agencies are important not only for Home Land Security but for the public’s safety as well. Law enforcement agencies are using The Home Land Security Information Network which allows them to securely collaborate with partners across the country. Law enforcement professionals also use HSIN to share information including Be on the Lookouts (BOLOs), Requests for Information (RFIs), For Your Information (FYIs), Intelligence Reports, and other Law Enforcement Sensitive documents. HSIN allows users to create and distribute messages to large, mission-specific contact lists. This rapid, secure information exchange provides law enforcement professionals with critical intelligence as they conduct work in the field ("Homeland Security Information Network - Law Enforcement Mission", n.d.). Sec440 Social Engineering

...Recommendations for Security Measures SEC440 Abstract A social engineering attack is a threat that can be both the most effective attack, as well as the most devastating. This paper will detail some of the strategies of identifying and circumventing a social engineering attempt on an organization. I will give real world examples of social engineering attacks and how the attack was able to succeed in easily infiltrating an organization’s IT systems. . Recommendations for Security Measures Dictionary.com defines Social Engineering as “the application of the findings of social science to the solution of actual social problems.” (Dictionary.com, 2011). However in the Information Security world we use this word in a more specific sense. Christopher Hadnagy wrote a great book on this subject called “Social Engineering: The Art of Human Hacking” He defines on his website that Social Engineering is “the act of manipulating a person to accomplish goals that may or may not be in the ‘target’s’ best interest. This may include obtaining information, gaining access, or getting the target to take certain action.” (Hadnagy, 2011). This is the definition of Social Engineering I will be using throughout this paper, and this is perhaps the most dangerous form of attack available to hackers. A Social Engineering attack can be initiated from many different vectors. A phone call could be made by an attacker to extract data. email phishing attacks can be composed to look like a...

The Merit of the Lion King

...Mason Schmidt Rose Womack Business Ethics 11//2014 Hunting Ethics For my research paper I chose to discuss the topic of hunting ethics. I have several reasons for choosing this topic, first and foremost hunting is my biggest passion in life and I see a lot of misconceptions regarding hunting in the media and in the general public, another reason I chose is due to the firestorm that was generated when a Texas cheerleader, Kendall Jones, posted pictures of game animals she had legally taken on an African safari with her father on Facebook. This incident truly showed me for the first time how widespread anti-hunting sentiment was as well as how little people seem to know about it. In order to counter these sentiments and give people a better understanding of hunting and how it is not unethical, I will state what I believe to be the three most common ethical objections to hunting and then provide rebuttals. The three objections are, hunting is unethical because it disrupts nature and has caused the extinction of numerous species, hunting is unethical because modern technology gives humans an unfair advantage, and finally, the biggest and most common objection, hunting is unethical because it causes animals to experience extreme duress and pain. It is my hope that my arguments will sway you to see that hunting, when done lawfully, is completely ethical. Objection one is “hunting is unethical because it disrupts nature and has caused the extinction of...

Outsourcing America Essay

...Answer this question for me is anything near you made in America? Check your phone, shirt, shoes, anything. Now the reluctant expected answer should be, no. Now you probably did find China, Vietnam,Mexico,Bangladesh, or Thailand. The reason for all this is to make a point on how much Americans lives are outsourced. Outsourced is defined as to obtain a good or service from an outside source.Outsourcing has benefited individuals, businesses, and the world for centuries, however, through its brutalized international evolution, the country could suffer. The first type of individual outsourcing that everyone has been aware of for centuries is obtaining domestic help. The world has outsourced in this way for a very long time. Everyone has done this for similar reasons as to why anything is outsources because it saves time and efficiency while wanted tasks improve. Healthcare Information Systems

...out in the Health Partners reading? One example that I noticed while reading this chapter was the use of the electronic medical record. Health Partners moved beyond the data entry aspects of the EMR and made a wizard. This wizard “helped guide clinicians in their decision making about what treatments might be best for patients.” The wizard is a perfect way to standardize and customized care based on individual’s needs. With the EMR, pathways can be established to fit the workflows you want to establish, instead of performing the current workflows in digital form. This is currently what I see in our EMR. Our EMR was set up just like our paper forms. Easy for nurses, however is retitled with extra steps, redundant information, and not way to interface into a decision support to guide us to position our patients any different, be on the lookout for potential needs while our patient is under anesthesia, or how to promote standardization among our patient population-surgical patients. The other example I see that will be a great improvement in the health care system is Employee Health. The idea of self-assessment in the work place to improve the health of the work force could be integrated into a yearly bonus or break on their health care insurance. What a concept, those that log self-assessments, see a primary care doctor, and then follow up pays less for insurance. The HIT that could be involved in this aspect would be adding “fit bit” technology which was mentioned in class...

Bullying: Ethical or Unethical

...bullying was a precipitating factor (Dake, Price, and Telljohann, 2003). The US Secret Service investigated characteristics of students involved in school shootings in the United States. During the Secret Service’s research, they found 37 different school shootings, two-thirds involved attackers who "felt persecuted, bullied, threatened, attacked, or injured by others prior to the incident". While two-thirds of the cases did not directly involve school bullying, "a number of the attackers had experienced bullying and harassment that was longstanding and severe. In those cases, the experience of bullying appeared to play a major role in motivating the attack at the school (US Secret Service, 2000)”. Ethics is another factor to consider when thinking about bullying and its effects on the victims. Burke and Richer break down behavior into two groups. Clearly wrong and conditionally wrong, of the two clearly wrong would be the proper fit for the topic that I am discussing. Clearly wrong includes behaviors which are so widely viewed as unethical that few people would attempt to justify them on moral grounds ( Burke and Richer, 2007). Researchers have found several different factors which contribute to a person becoming a bully and the victims of bullying. In this paper I will discuss the suggested causes of bullying. The causes are family/home environment, academic/school, and physical characteristics. In...

Corruption Schemes

...improved chances of re-election and helping friends or members of their social or ethnic networks obtain public resources. The usual interpretation of misuse is the use of office for illegal purposes, impairment of integrity, virtue, or moral principle, inducement to wrong or improper or unlawful means, but it is occasionally construed more broadly as the mis-allocation of public resources in ways that enhance the official's private returns. Recent years have also seen an explosion of empirical research on corruption measurement. The research conducted for this paper, which has developed and used both subjective guides which are based on perceptions of corruption and objective measures of illegal activity. The following topics will be discussed throughout this paper: Corruption Schemes Today; Corruption Schemes Tomorrow; Investigations of Corruption Schemes; and Detection and Prevention of Corruption Schemes. The research conducted throughout this paper focuses on the topics above. Corruption Schemes Today Corruption Schemes today are heavily engulfed in politics. “CHICAGO — Corruption has tainted politics here since Al Capone's heyday, but the arrest Tuesday of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich revealed alleged conspiracy and bribery schemes so brazen that veteran investigators and prosecutors could barely contain their revulsion. "The conduct would make Lincoln roll over in his grave," said U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald. In breathtaking detail...
