Salmonella is one of the most common causes of food-borne illness in the United States. Salmonella is a bacterium that infects the stomach and digestive tract. It can also infect the eye. It is not known to get into the eye, but eye infections can be one of the symptoms. Salmonella can cause other types of intestinal infections. Salmonella is a bacterium that can spread through human or animal feces. It has been said that some rodents and retile feces are strong and popular sources of salmonella. Salmonella can also live in eggs, soil, and water.
Salmonella is typically pronounced /sælməˈnɛlə/, not /sæməˈnɛlə/, since it is named for pathologist Daniel Elmer Salmon who, like most bearers of his surname, pronounced it with an [l].[citation needed] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salmonella

The most common way salmonella can be transferred is through raw or undercooked meat. Salmonella can also be transferred to humans through unwashed fruits, nuts & vegetables. Some athletes drink raw eggs. That could be a source of contamination for salmonella. Touching human or animal feces can cause salmonella poisoning. Not washing your hands before handling food, can transfer the poison. While cooking, it can be transferred by using the same cutting board or cooking utensils for raw and cooked meats. Not washing your hands while handling different types of food can transfer the bacteria as well. Contamination can come from animal or human feces during processing or harvesting. The soil in which some crops grow can be contaminated as well. Milk that hasn’t been pasteurized can contain salmonella.

There are news reports all the time of things being recalled because of contamination. The majority of the time it’s either meat, dairy or vegetables such as lettuce or cabbage.
In July of 2012, there was a recall on almost 30,000 pounds of ground beef. About 33 people in 7 states got sick. The outbreak was discovered by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. I think there should be more of a system put together to be able to detect these problems before people are infected and get sick. I understand that our country is in recession and times are hard, but the need for good health is important. I understand that there are cuts that need to be made. I don’t agree with them cutting the funding to make sure we are not eating or consuming contaminated meat or products. http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/07/23/565091/salmonella-outbreak-food-safety-cuts/?mobile=nc The symptoms for salmonella poisoning include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, diarrhea and sometimes blood may be present in the feces. These symptoms may be present within 8-48 hours of ingestion. Salmonella poisoning usually last 4-7 days. In some cases you can become dehydrated. That is when you need to see a doctor. If the patient has AIDS, is receiving cancer chemotherapy, elderly or an infant the doctor may prescribe an antibiotic. It is recommended that you try to eat a normal balanced meal. Drink lots of fluids to try and stay hydrated. Avoid sodas. It has too much sugar and not enough electrolytes. Stay away from spicy foods as well as coffee and alcoholic beverages for at least 2-3 days after all symptoms have gone away.
