It was a misty and foggy mundane day in the bright city of Manhattan where I awoke to the sound of whistles christening the air, signaling the matrix of commuters riding to work. As I gently moved my fingers across my rugged face, I could feel the wrinkles, as deep as trenches. I live across the scenic Empire State building where my guitar and I rejoice by playing euphonic tunes. I busked for a living and was in need of money. On the odd day, I would save up to play poker, contemplating and hoping one day that it would lead me to immeasurable riches and fortune. The game of poker is a fascinating game, because despite the silence across table I could sense the players’ feelings of frustration, suspicion and anxiety, exacerbated by the stuttering of poker chips. Although I could sense the inner cry of the players, the game itself is quite calm and serene, a place of tranquility, yet there are murmurs. As I strolled towards the opulent casinos, my mind was a blank canvas, apart from the few momentary mental images of my loose game plan and repertoire of poker faces. I walked through mezzanine of the building only to engulf by the surrounding piercing stares of dilettantes. I could feel them conjuring cynical thoughts of an old grimy man, but this did not deter me from goal. As I pulled the lavish gold embossed chair from behind and took my seat, I called nearby waiter and ordered my poisonous liquor of choice. The awkward silence of the room became palpable, like a thick mystic fog on a casual Sunday morning. He returned with my absinthe, a lime green concoction that intoxicated my senses with its fresh fumes. The dealer rapidly sifted through the deck as if he was an illusionist. A glare beamed into my eye from an enriched gold plated Rolex Poljot chronograph. The man’s face was familiar, covered by a charming pair of matte black aviators. The name from the top my head Vivo Scarletto blurted out in my mind, and he was the man on top of the hierarchy, a man with such prosperity no one could come close. He owns every single piece of real estate in New York, take a punt on how much he makes? Typically, a poker game is a picture of peace. There is no drama, just low voiced whispers, evoking a serene and monotonous. The dealer began dealing, releasing a stream of cards from his mercurial hands. The pot started at five hundred thousand. Scaletto drew his card. Looking over his shoulder, I tried catching a quick glimpse of his hand, and noticed a seven, eight, nine, and ten of hearts; the foundation of a straight flush. I drew a Cuban cigar from my pristine shirt. Engulfed in its Smokey hallucinogenic fumes, I forgot its existence. There were plenty of emotions amalgamating in the air, but fortunately I was able to contain mine. I finished my tobacco, heaved it from my yellow stained teeth and launched it toward the silver plated grate, and without a blink I followed its flight. A complete quietness began crystallizing amongst the company at the green clothed tabletop, like a tranquil sky. I was learning my hand with a slight contemptuous grin. But in my eyes, I was conveying something sinister and macabre. Scaletto grasped for a blue chip. “Well, my own are valued about that much," Scaletto murmured, flippantly tossing it into the pot. Thereupon he leaned back perfectly in his seat and restored his focus at possibility of a straight flush. The attorney seated to my left, shuffled through his chips and glared ponderingly at his hand. The quiet dilemma poisoned the room, like the smoke from a conflagration. The clocked ticked relentlessly, reaching the finals stages of 1am. Players had now disappeared, overcome by the intricacies and complexities of the game, and now it was between the four of us. The pot was raised to an exceptional amount of thirteen million! I didn’t know if I was fantasizing or if it was my Absinthe kicking in, but the mood was euphoric. I didn’t order any more drinks that night, instead choosing to focus on the final stages of my game plan. I couldn’t tell if the other players had dozed off, as their heads were as still as Michelangelo’s David. The lights dimly flared across the room. A new dealer entered the room and quoted in his voluptuous, deep voice, “With this chip exchange we enter the final stages of the game, which means no more buying. The big blind was now worth one million US. A tingle flowed through my body, as I knew my life is going to change after the final phase of this marathon. The European dealer drew the cards. It was an Ace, four, six and eight of spades followed by an Ace of hearts. The dealer tossed out my two, my heart stopped as I revealed the cards. Ace and two of hearts, and my heart kicked back to life as my inner turmoil rendered itself into happiness. With this hand, I could be living in a mansion I contemplated, not on a rough piece of concrete, which I had called home for the last thirty years. The black man went all in for six million, with a malicious grin, and the attorney raised his hand signaling he is raising five million. My anxious stay turned obnoxious as the distinctive ascent of the coffee punctured the dull atmosphere. Scaletto called in forty four point five million as my cynical grin faced him. It was between my foe and I. I revealed my Ace and two of hearts. I couldn’t tell the emotions behind those shades of his. I sipped the final amounts of coffee as Scaletto plucked of his glasses and revealed a full house. My heart stopped it wsas like a bullet in the chest as the contemptuous grin come back on his sickening face of Scalleto. I scurried out of the colossal glass doors, in despair, knowing that my life was never going to change. I strolled back to my shack of a house, only to see hoards of men younger than me enter the same casino, not knowing that they would inevitably need to lick their wounds.

A Conflict as a Poker Game

...Mélanie Urvoy English 102-005 13 February 2012 Research paper A Conflict as a Poker Game In the early twentieth century, women were still dependent on men. It was difficult for a woman to have a job and be financially independent. In addition, at this time, women had to keep their virginity to have a chance to get married. A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams is placed in the picturesque French Quarter in New Orleans. The play starts when Blanche DuBois comes in New Orleans to visit her sister Stella after she lost the family plantation Belle-Reve because of money problems. She then meets her brother-in-law Stanley Kowalski, a World War II veteran. As soon as they meet each other, a mistrustful rivalry starts between them. A Streetcar Named Desire depicts the conflict between two opposing views as a poker game between Blanche and Stanley for control. From the beginning of the play, Williams starts distinguishing Stanley and Blanche by their mentalities. In fact, Blanche has the Old South mentality. She grew up in a plantation where she learnt how to behave as an aristocrat whereas her brother-in-law is an industrial and a Polish immigrant representing the New South. Blanche is described as delicate and fragile whereas Stanley is rude and violent. Blanche lives in a world of illusion. She acts as a queen and wants the men to treat her like it. Unlike Blanche, Stanley lives in a rude world, a world where if a person are strong enough physically and mentally, he...

Commerce Casino Research Paper

...Ask a poker player where to go to play poker, and you might get a ton of different answers. Some enjoy playing locally, while others will recommend making a trip to a place like Las Vegas, Atlantic City or Niagara Falls because there are more tourists and the games are juicier. An increasing number of players are getting serious about poker and may recommend a spot based on how much action there is and how big the games are. It's a safe bet that if you ask any serious cash-game player what the single best cardroom in the world is, they will answer the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, California. While you may find a soft game in some small corner of the world, you'll never find the shear magnitude of action that is present at the commerce every single day. They have $5-10 no-limit...

Demonstrative Communication

...Demonstrative Communication Demonstrative communication is exactly what it sounds like. One is demonstrating while they are trying to communicate. It can be verbal and/or non-verbal. Verbal demonstrative communication can be inflection, tone, or volume. Non-verbal demonstrative communication can include facial expressions, body movements/language, appearance, or something else that another can take in with their senses. In order to convey a message or persuade a particular point to one or more people, demonstrative communication is usually always used in one form or another. Just talking to someone in a monotone, robotic voice will usually always lose your audience. Any time you communicate, you are trying to send a message to the receiver and you want that message to be received and understood in such a way that the receiver gets the correct message. If you want to send someone the message that you have lots of money, you will dress and act accordingly. You will buy extravagant items and try to flaunt these things. A heated argument includes loud voices and wild gestures. A loving relationship can include softer tones and touching. A real good example of this type of communication would be a pastor/preacher in a church. During counseling or church events, the pastor is usually calm and his mannerisms will be comforting. His voice is soft, but can also be authoritative or sympathetic in tone. He can use an arm on or over the shoulder with varying degrees...

Gambling

...You bet. Attempts to ban online gaming are doomed to fail. Better to legalise, tax and regulate the habit Jul 8th 2010 PROHIBITION destroyed America’s once-robust brewing industry, made smugglers rich and did nothing to curb drinking. Outlawing drugs has been a similarly spectacular failure. There is little reason to suppose that the latest line in American prohibition—an effort to ban online gambling—will fare any better. In 2006 Congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act, which made it illegal for financial institutions to transfer funds between punters and online-gambling sites. Some companies promptly pulled out of the American market. But others stepped in, and the opportunities to bet online have expanded elsewhere in the world. So, after a brief dip, Americans are now betting online about as much as they did four years ago. The Justice Department still maintains that online gambling is illegal, yet large numbers of Americans carry on regardless. The reason is simple: anyone who wants to gamble and has an internet connection can do so. And plainly many people do want to gamble. In 2009 the legal gambling market totalled $335 billion globally. Nearly two-thirds of that came from lotteries and casinos. Gambling in casinos is growing fast in East Asia, particularly Macau, the world’s biggest market. As our special report explains, online gambling remains relatively small (just over $25 billion in 2009), but, as with so many online industries, it...

...Gambling: Reality versus Game Gambling. An activity that involves risk and risk taking. In Don Delillo’s Falling Man novel, Keith is a broken man who gets over the haunting, shocking, and nerve numbing events he experienced on the day of the 9/11 attack. He recounts these events vaguely and distantly, thinking about them in his head as if they weren’t especially important or relevant to him. He acts as a bystander to his own experience and looks onto his experience as if he was a third party observer. Keith’s nature to do this extends to his obsessively strong inclination and urge to play poker. In order to avoid the events of reality, Keith numbs himself by separating his conscious in the real world and teleporting it into the gambling world in which he can concentrate on the virtual world of gambling. Gambling plays a crucial role in Delillo’s novel by separating Keith’s identity in the real world and replacing it with an alternate identity in the game of poker. The first instance of the audience being introduced to Keith’s obsession with gambling is when Keith revisits his apartment building that is in danger of collapsing. The audience wonders why Keith is so desperate to get to the building, as he had to go through multiple layers of security guards and policemen, showing his ID and a fabricated story to gain sympathy, “there were cats he had to feed, three of them, and if they died his children would be devastated and he showed the splint on his arm.” (Delillo 24) As...

Poker Theory by David Sklansky

...The Theory of Poker By David Sklansky A product of Two Plus Two Publishing SIXTH PRINTING October 2004 1 About David Sklansky David Sklansky is generally considered the number one authority on gambling in the world today. Besides his nine books on the subject, David also has produced two videos and numerous writings for various gaming publications. His occasional poker seminars always receive an enthusiastic reception including those given at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City and the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. More recently David has been doing consulting work for casinos, Internet gaming sites, and gaming device companies. He has recently invented a new game called Poker Challenge, soon to appear in casinos. David attributes his standing in the gambling community to three things: 1. The fact that he presents his ideas as simply as possible (sometimes with Mason Malmuth) even though these ideas frequently involve concepts that are deep, subtle, and not to be found elsewhere. 2. The fact that what he says and writes can be counted on to be accurate. 3. The fact that to this day a large portion of his income is still derived from gambling (usually poker but occasionally blackjack, sports betting, horses, video games, casino promotions, or casino tournaments). Compulsive Gambling

...COMPULSIVE GAMBLING: WIN, LOSE OR DRAW Submitted by Jennifer Pelto Dr. Champion May 7, 2007 COMPULSIVE GAMBLING; WIN, LOSE OR DRAW? "Just like a chemically addicted person, a compulsive gambler will do anything in order to get the money for a fix. To satisfy their habit, teens have been known to borrow tens of thousands of dollars from loan sharks, sell drugs, and even steal money from parents, boyfriends or girlfriends."(Howey : 1999) At fourteen, an eighth-grader from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida became hooked on gambling. It all started with one bet on a jai alai match. Within a few years he was cutting class and spending 2500 dollars a week on jai alai. He even began stealing money from his parents and the theme park where he worked. By sixteen, Michael G. was an addict.(Nesbit : 1998) Compulsive gambling is an issue that is affecting millions of teenagers nationwide. The thrill of winning money and the attention gained from doing so is enough to cause an addiction. And since gambling is illegal for people under the age of eighteen, it seems more alluring to those who are not of legal age to play. Teens seem to think that gambling is harmless fun, but they have no idea of the problems that can come from it. "As more teens are being drawn into the culture of chance, gambling is influencing American society in deep and unexpected ways."(Morgan : 1996) In teens, at least five percent are problem gamblers and at least nine percent...

...speaking in front of people so having to present in another language is just awful. On another note, I’m still not sure if college is the right decision for me, sometimes I feel that I could be spending my time elsewhere finding out what it is that I truly want to do with my life. But as for now I figured it can’t hurt to at least get started and have the college experience until I either graduate or figure out what I want to do. As for my life outside the university you will find me mostly hanging with friends, having cookouts, four wheeling in the warm months and snowboarding in the cold months. I also enjoy getting a bunch of friends together and playing poker and pretty much any other card game for that matter. One of my goals for college is to start a business and gain experience so that when I get out I will be ahead of the game and have that business as a backup plan. As for life after college, I have a couple plans; plan A is to be an entrepreneur doing things like: starting and growing small businesses, buying, renting, and investing in apartment complexes, houses, restaurants and other things of that nature. If I go this route, ten years down the road I hope to be married and own a hotel and residing in the penthouse living a stress free life only worrying about what my next venture in life will be. Plan B is to go into the Navy after I graduate college and become a...

The Battle of Banning Laptops

...grades in your classes, other than studying. However, students mistreat their privileges of having laptops in class. In both Andrew Goldstein's "Keep Online Poker Out of the Classroom: Why Professors should Ban Laptops" and Elena Choy's "Laptops in the Classroom? No Problem", they both explain how laptops can be a nuisance or an advantage for college students. While they both have proficient arguments, they differ with what they feel is right; as one argument is coming from a college student, the other is coming from a professor in college. Surprisingly, while the battle of the student and teacher began, will be surprise with who wants to ban laptops. Andrew Goldstein, a student from Tufts University, is one of the students that use his laptop in some of his class. Although he does use his laptop for some of his class, he thinks that using laptops in some lager classes are a burden. Laptops are open as the professor talks, but are the students really paying attention? Some students use their laptops for other purposes, like playing online games or online shopping. Goldstein stated that he see "screens that show students are playing poker or shopping online" Also, while others are doing everything except what they are supposed to be doing, their colleagues are distracted by what they are doing on their laptops, especially with games; Goldstein thought the "tapping noise" of the typing is, also, very distracting. More than ever, students, with their laptops, use stenography, writing...

Poker Column

...as any to really start playing seriously. Not just for fun, but I had rent to pay. Up to this point I’d probably logged somewhere in the neighborhood of 2000 hours at the card table in various casinos across the country and even online before black Friday. I’d played every type of game, most working class limits (Up to $5-$10 No limit games) and had some success but also my taste of major failures. I was never able to get the consistent results that the pros seem to get year after year, but I also wasn’t losing my car payment every month at the card table. It really changed a couple of years ago, when I felt myself stop playing the cards and make calls and raises based on the player I was playing. I’m not sure where the change occurred, but it did. I guess it’s a lot like any other sport. Practice and playing makes you better. I remember the hand that made me start thinking maybe I could really do it. Maybe I could play not just for the fun, which it is sooo much fun, but to make a little cash on the side. My buddy and I were playing a $1-$2 No Limit game with a $100 to $300 buy in. As a general rule, I always buy in for at least 100 times the big blinds in No Limit games or else I invariably feel I’m in an all in situation every time I get in a hand. So I bought for the max. And was hovering right around my buy in for several rounds winning a few losing a few. But hey, my buddy and I were having a few beers and a lot of fun. Something changed though; I...
