The primary characters in both films are disconnected from themselves and therefore have trouble functioning in their own lives. These characters also have differing beliefs on the nature of their own realities and are disconnected from them. Similarly, David Fincher and Quinton Tarantino use thematic and stylistic devices to disconnect the viewer from the reality of the films’ narratives. In Reservoir Dogs, the characters are disconnected from themselves; they do not even have names. Instead, they are each assigned a color and are referred to by their colleagues as Mr. Orange, Mr. Pink, Mr. White, Mr. Brown, etc. The men are selected to do a job for a criminal organization that involves stealing precious jewels. What makes this organization so odd, however, is the fact that none of the men selected are allowed to use their real names. The head of the organization, Joe, assigns these color names to the criminals, creating an air of disconnect, as neither the characters in the film nor the viewers know their true identities. This removal of identity not only creates disconnection among the characters, but also causes disconnection in the characters’ own selves, negatively effecting their ability to be the “professionals” that they so often pride themselves on being. Havana Bay exceeds the reader’s expectations in all of these criteria confirming that it is a great novel. Does the novel have a surprising hook? Shelly Thacker defines a surprising hook as the “first five pages…hook the reader with an opening line that surprises, intrigues, startles and makes (the Reader) want to know more.” In Havana Bay, the first five pages represent an extremely graphic and suspenseful hook. The novel begins by introducing us to five characters Arkady, Rufo, Captain Arcos, Sergeant Luna and Osorio leaving the reader curious as to what their role will be in the story. The description of a dead body being recovered out of the water will startle the reader with vivid lines such as “grabbed onto first the inner tube and then a foot hanging from it. The foot came off….as the foot turned into jelly”(4). Despite the great hook, Cruz Smith is careful not to overload the reader with background. He moves the reader right into the story from the very first line, “A police boat directed a light …”(1). ...Stolpestad Many people today are caught up in their everyday life and routines. They get up in the morning, go to their jobs and come back in the evening to eat with their families. This is a typically day routine, which many of us can not escape from. Because it can be very difficult to break these habits, and make new and more challenging and self-realization, many people are stuck with the life they have. In the short-story “Stolpestad” by William Lychack, you hear about a certain police officer’s daily life. You get the feeling that he is a very normal middle-aged man, who lives with his wife and two children. His daily routine is always the same, and he just drives around town all day long without any specific happenings. It sounds very boring indeed, but it also seems like he has settled down with it and accepted that that's the way the cookie crumbles. The first thing you notice, as a reader is the very special way the story is told. The story is told in third person, seen from the outside in present tense. The way he is referring to himself as “you” seems very powerful, because it gives the reader the impression of how life is in his exact position. “Maybe you’ll take that glass of water after all, you say…”. Sentences like this are very common in the story. It feels like the narrator is creating a de ja vu in your head. He can forecast what will happen next, and knows how “you” will react next. A train station can be viewed as an anonymous place where people like Hugo can live without being noticed.
