Police Organization The United States has a complex law enforcement system due to the fact that there are various levels of policing agencies. In this paper I will be discussing the different types of police agencies at the local, state, and federal level. I will be emphasizing on how each one is structured and organized. I will also identify and elaborate on the principal roles, and functions of police organizations, and how they relate to the law.
Local Police
In most states throughout the country there are many different police agencies that are in cities, counties, and towns. Local law enforcement officers have different responsibilities compared to their state and federal counterparts. They mainly do their patrols within local areas, and areas that are in their jurisdiction. Local police are typically the first ones to arrive at a crime scene or an emergency call. Local officers provide more of a community service to the public. One of many duties they perform can consist from traffic control to maintaining court safety. Local police serve as the first line of law within these cities and towns, and work hand in hand with the community.
State Police
The duties that the state police provide are very different then federal and local police. Their organization structure is formed under different guidelines from the population of the state. Also the types of available resources they have depend on the geography of the state and funding. Their man power can also be determined by the types of crimes the state is used to seeing. None the less, all state police have highway patrols and can have certain responsibilities. States that have wild life can have a gaming commission that state police are involved in. State police help local and federal agencies in many

...Police Organization 2 There are many different types of law enforcement agencies and they are organized in different levels. You have officers beginning at your local small town police department all the way up to the large federal agencies. Within your state and local agencies, you have officers who make up your local police, your state and highway patrol, special jurisdiction police, and your deputy sheriff. Your local police would include municipal, county, tribal, and regional police that derive authority from the local governing body. Your state police and highway patrol almost go hand in hand. State police often perform police duties which could include highway patrol and statewide investigations. State police also assist local police with investigations and emergencies that go beyond the resources and jurisdictional boundaries of the local agency. Special jurisdiction police are officers who provide police services for special entities or areas within another jurisdiction. Special jurisdiction police are generally full-service departments, offering the same services as local police. Lastly, you have the Deputy Sheriff’s office. Deputy Sheriffs are normally granted authority by the state to enforce the state law at the local county level. They also generally work in jails; serve warrants and court summons (www.discoverpolicing.org) The principal roles and functions of our police organizations would include them having to fulfill the duty imposed...

Police Organization

...Police Organization CJS/210 Police Organization Police agencies are all organized very similar to each other, but the main difference is in their jurisdiction. Local police agencies make up the largest number of law enforcement officers in the United States. Local agencies are responsible for patrolling, and doing investigations of crimes committed within their own jurisdiction. Local police departments are broken down into levels which are patrolled by separate organizations. City level - Full jurisdiction within respectful city, Sherriff's Offices- County Level - which is full jurisdiction within their respectful county, and these organizations have limited jurisdiction outside of their areas (Grant & Terry, 2008). State agencies are given the ability to make arrests, and execute search warrants if an offense is committed in the presence of an officer. One level of the state agency policing is the State Patrol or better known as Highway Patrol (Grant & Terry, 2008). These patrols have jurisdiction to enforce traffic laws, and investigate accidents on any highway or interstate in the respective state that they work for. State Troopers are given full jurisdiction throughout the entire state weather they are in a township, county, interstate, or highway. State police officers are frequently called upon to assist other law enforcement agencies, usually agencies that are in small towns or rural areas (Grant & Terry, 2008). Federal level agencies are made up of...

The different levels would be local, state and federal. I will also explain how they are organized and how their roles relate to the law. In the United States we have one of the most complex law enforcement systems because of the various levels of their policing agencies. In the United States each ton, county, state, city, and small village has its own policing agency. Even though there are various levels of policing agencies the way they organize them are all very similar. This is because law enforcement agencies have the same objective. The organization of the police agencies are hierarchical. These organizations are designs with rank structure, separate departments and units. These components work together to form a fully functioning law enforcement agency. Some examples of local agencies are city, county, town, and incorporated village police. These agencies work together in order to ensure safety at a local level. There are many different functions and roles of the local police agencies. Police Organization Paper

...Wk 2 cjs/210 There are many different types of police agencies within the local, state, and federal level of police agencies. The local agencies consist of municipal police which, are controlled by the local government, paid from the city budget, have less rights than state paid police, and they are limited to what kind of equipment they can use. There are also county police, county sheriffs, tribal, and regional police. Police agencies are organized into geographic districts since many counties are too big for just one police department they spread them out throughout the city. As stated in our text our police agencies are organized somewhat resembling the military, they wear uniforms, carry weapons, are ranked, and get punished for not following orders. The state agencies consist of state police which are also known as state troopers that spend most of their time enforcing traffic laws, they are able to work anywhere in the state they work for and are called upon from other agencies when needed. The Bureaus of criminal investigations work with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies which deal with investigations, sex offenders, training other law enforcement officials, and put on presentations that are similar to D.A.R.E and G.R.E.A.T to teach the public about the safety of not using drugs. The federal agencies consist of men and women doing the same duties as our local and state agencies but they have jurisdiction over the whole county they are in, and...

Organization Behavior of a Police Setting

...Organizational Behavior Taking a Detailed Look Inside Police Settings Organizational Behavior Taking a Detailed Look Inside Police Settings Project Introduction Our group consisted of four members – Danielle Clark, Jessica Grupposo, Davida Muldrow, and Jennifer Zajac. Together we took a detailed look into organizational behaviors as they pertain to a police setting. Using concepts from our course, the movie Training Day, and other resources we analyzed a variety of theories as they apply to police officers and their organizations. Our project was accomplished by dividing the main ideas in our text among our four group members who then used individual judgment to apply the concepts. We remained focused on key organizational behavioral theories such as individual attitudes and behaviors, teamwork, communication, power & politics, and organizational culture. We did learn the principles of organizational behavior overlap a great deal. Although each of us was discussing entirely different theories they all tied into one another in some way. For the purpose of this paper, the movie Training Day is about an LAPD narcotics officer, Detective Alonzo Harris, played by Denzel Washington. Harris is the head of a street unit and is responsible for training an honest and ethical rookie cop named Jake Hoyt, played by Ethan Hawke. The entire film takes place on their first day out together as Detective Harris shows Jake how to run the streets the way he thinks is best. Detective...

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant awarded $1,000,000 for salaries, new equipment, along with USDA's Community Facilities Grant in combination with Rural Responders Grant awarded, $ 500,000 (United States Department of Justice, 2012). Junction City Proposal The Junction City Mayor and Council hired a new police chief to work with the task force to incorporate the new change of using the COPP organization strategies (Peak, 2010). This innovative mayor, commissioner, along with the police chief applied and received three different grants $1.5 million dollars (United States Department of Justice, 2012). Organization of Police Department and Collaboration Activity

...Organization of Police Department Personnel and Collaboration Activity One of the main differences I spotted right off was the size between the two. Portsmouth Police Department has several Division of Labor. This is probably so due to Portsmouth Police Department probably serves several thousand people, having a lot officer and or have several precincts geographically placed throughout the city or county. Portsmouth Police Department Organizational chart clearly shows that from the three main bureaus. Under Operation Bureau, They are two divisions and a crime analysis unit. With the Goldsboro Police Department, They have one main Precinct which serves as the administrative headquarters for the entire Department. Goldsboro Police Department doesn’t have division, I guess because of their size. Goldsboro police Department operates from Police Operations and Police Services, with maybe 70 to 100 Police Officers. The second main difference I notice is within the Portsmouth Police Department. This department uses a span of control that couldn’t be typical of the natural average for a Police Department. This Department has several Divisions, Units, and services. The chain of command has to work perfectly in a unit this size. First this Department has to have a organizational chart, This will show supervisors to whom they are accountable for and whom they are accounted for. To give an example, a Sergeant at the Portsmouth Police Department has to have at a minimum 10...

Cja/394 Local, State and Federal Police Organization Management Issue Trends

...Local, State and Federal Police Organization Management Issue Trends CJA/394 Local, State and Federal Police Organization Management Issue Trends As Robinson (2009) reveals, policing has dramatically changed within the last three decades. While the majority of departments and officers (Robinson, 2009), reportedly 75% serve local towns and cities and thereby comprise a tier of the local government, these departments have been increasingly challenged to meet the changing needs of the community, the political directives and do so in ways that serve all the stakeholders. Understandably, differences exist among departments relative to their size, their organizational structures, communication methods, levels of community interaction and technology use (Shevory, 2003; Roberg et.al., 2003). Balancing budgets, attracting, hiring and retaining qualified personnel, maintaining organizational culture and assuring the organization upholds honesty and integrity also inform managerial responsibilities (Roberg et.al., 2003). Within a changing landscape, one in which the media, the public, economic and political demands shift considerably, police management fulfills both intermediary and leadership roles (Roberg et.al., 2003). As it does, it struggles to achieve legitimacy in the eyes of the public, the eyes of the department, the eyes of the legal sector and the governmental one (Mastrofski, 2007). Charged with public safety, community policing, and crime-control, the...

...enhance a peaceful and progressive society. To be able to run such a program, communal groups are supposed to oversee and execute the relevant policies that promote the idea. This has seen community policing units formed to run the administration and operations of law and order enforcement in a society. They played a great role in developing the social and economic wellbeing of the communities they serve. One of the community policing programs that has been formed in the past, is the Virtual County Police Department. Virtual County Police Department The agency was started by Virtual County community 55 years ago where it was headed by a Chief with an assistant leading small numbers of police officers who relied on farming as their economic activity. Over the last two decades, the initiative has been able to become the primary policing agent in the County (Virtual County Police Department, 2009). This has been a major achievement since it has ended the problems it had with the State Police in carrying out its operations. In addition, the personnel have grown from the initial small figure of officers to more than 400 officers and 170 assisting civilian staff members in its operation. This is a milestone step towards maintaining law and order in this area. In executing its operations, the department is run by two commands which comprise of operation command and administration command. The two commands are assisted to execute and implement the rules and policies of the agency by several...

San Marcos Pd

...SAN MARCOS POLICE DEPARTMENT The San Marcos Police Department is the primary general service law enforcement agency of San Marcos, Texas. The department is currently comprised of 95 sworn officers and 35 full time administrative staff members. On the law enforcement front, it is here at the local level that the major advances against the problems of crime and order maintenance goes on. This paper will serve to explain several key administrative concepts related to the operations of the San Marcos Police Department. In particular, this paper will examine the organizational structure within the department, in addition to, motivation and leadership components. STRUCTURE The accepted patterns of police organizations follow closely those to be found in military service (Leonard, 1969). This appears to be a very logical development since a police organization is semi-military in character. Police departments tend to be organized with rank structures, utilize the usage of uniforms and incorporate many of the various artillery of the armed forces, designed in large measure to set cops apart from civilians and signal obvious membership in an organization that exerts the immediate force of the government (Crowper, 2000). Furthermore, within an organizational dimension, police departments fall under the classification of mechanistic organizations (Stojkovic, Kalinch & Klofas, 2008). This type of organization is commonly regarded by its traditional bureaucratic foundation, characterized...

Police History

...Police History Jason Turley CJA 214 January 17, 2013 Jess Gutierrez Police History The efforts of policing have been around for centuries. In 2200 BC Babylon used the code of Hammurabi for standardized laws and punishments; in 27 BC Augustus created the Roman system of Vigiles; in 1285 the watch-and-word system was created by the Statute of Winchester in England; in 1748 London formed the Bow Street Runners. Despite London possessing more than 400 police officers in the early 1800s they still had no centrally organized system for law enforcement. One man set out to change this flaw in the system, Sir Robert Peel. He devoted his life to developing a police force, which would provide services and safety for communities and their citizens throughout the world. Through his dedication and hard work of creating the London Metropolitan Police, he was dubbed the “father” of Modern policing. Sir Robert Peel accomplished all this while serving as the Home Secretary of England. Parliament was hesitant at first, but later passed the Metropolitan Police Act in 1829. This ACT provided funds for a 1,000 police officer force to be controlled by strict rules of conduct and discipline. Sir Robert Peel believed that “the police are people and the people are the police,” and in order for crime prevention to be successful it must keep crime from becoming intrusive to the people and their communities. Sir Robert Peel created this list of principles for policing. 1. The...
