2. How are the babies similar in their development? How are they different? Give specific examples. (Refer to growth and development principles discussed in class). One similarity in the development of the babies would be their response anytime they were upset - crying. Some examples would be Mari starting to cry because other kids were crying, or Baryarjargal being whipped in the face by his older brother. Another similarity is the sequential process in which they developed. For example, each baby didn’t start walking until capable of standing, and each baby didn’t start standing until capable of crawling. However, what is different in their development is the rate at which each baby progressed in the five areas of development. While one baby may learn to walk sooner, another may learn to read at a higher level than babies their age. Another difference is the language they learn growing up. I was most surprised to see how content Ponijao of Namibia was with his surroundings. Originally I thought a baby needed food, water, shelter, medicine, toys, books, and a hospitable environment to thrive. Ponijao had almost none of that and he was happy. Hattie from San Francisco would go to the park, read books, and end the day wrapped up in a blanket in a cozy, warm, bed. Instead, Ponijao would play with jagged rocks and sleep on a dirt floor in the middle of the desert. Yet he was still happy. There are two things I learned from the film (from Ponijao). First I learned that all a person truly needs to be happy is another who deeply cares about them. The second thing I learned is to take time every once in awhile to stop and ponder all the things that revolve around my life, and pick out the parts that really matter to
