Review of Related Literature This chapter contains foreign and local literatures that are related to this research paper. The purpose of these written works is to give more knowledge and information to the readers of this research paper related to poor academic performance.
Foreign Related Literature
College education is a stepping stone for someone’s future. A person’s academic performance reflects to his grades and it is a big factor that employers look for in finding for their employees. Employees are the core element of a business organization because the productivity of a business depends on the employee’s performance that is why employers are strict when it comes to employment. Not all college students are performing well academically and it is caused by different factors and these factors vary from what the students are experiencing while they are in college. One factor that we can consider is the media consumption like TV viewing and surfing of the internet but video game playing may have replace TV viewing as the most frequent form of media usage most likely for the male students according to Burgess (2012). Frequent players of video game usually ends up forgetting their home works or not reviewing for their exams but they may be using this as a reason to avoid doing these things and that causes their poor performance academically.
Romantic breakup of a student can also be a cause of academic performance being poor. According to Field (2013) students with high breakup distress have high negative emotions like depression, anxiety, and anger which results to negative behavior like poor academic performance.
Teachers or professors can also affect students’ academic performance through effective teaching or be the way they present their selves in front of the students. According to Foster (2010) teachers vary widely in their influence on attrition and performance of the students.
College students have different status in life they vary in marital status which they could be single or married, they could be employed full-time or part-time they may also have caretaker responsibilities for children or elderly. These reasons can affect the schedule that they chose for their class activities and their hours of sleep. Having not enough sleep or no sleep at all can have a huge effect on someone’s academic performance. According to Miles (2014) poor sleep quality is correlating to lower test grade. Lower test grade means poor academic performance according to Ratner (2008) educators should consider sleep patterns in academic advisements.
Approximately 10-30% of college students meets criteria for test anxiety and is at greater risk for poor academic performance compared to students without test anxiety, this is according to Szafranski (2010). When someone has test anxiety they tend to have low exam grades because they are having trouble focusing on their tests and they focus more on the tension, worry, and fear of failing their test. The test anxiety can happen during or before taking tests.
Family support has a great effect on the performance of a student. Even if a family has some problems with economic aspect family’s social support is a good cause of a better academic performance so if a student lack social support from his family it can affect the student’s academic performance according to Cheng (2012) the level of perceived family social support was important not only as a "main effect" predictor of the magnitude and stability of the students' GPA scores across three successive semesters, but also as a factor that helped female students to succeed regardless of their level of family economic support. According to the study that social support is more important for female students than to male. Social support usually comes from an intact family so if a student’s parents are separated it can also affect negatively to the student. College students whose parents had divorced were more likely, than students from intact families, to fail a college course this is according to Arbor (2008). This case may also result to students dropping out of college.
Most of the factors that students encounter are resulting to stress which is the main reason why students experience poor academic performance according to Finn (2009), Arbor (2011), Kadapatti (2012). If stress becomes excessive it can affect health, academic performance, and many more. Academic stress is mainly experienced by the college students, high aspiration, poor study habits, more study problems, change in medium of instruction and low socio- economic conditions are the usual factors that students consider. Stress can also be from somewhere else other than school which is sleep, relationship difficulties, etc.
Local
This part of the chapter focuses on the local literary texts that are related to academic performances. College students usually choose their courses depending on what profession they want to have in the future but some students’ courses were chosen by their parents. They think that they should obey their parents because what they want is for the best. But since the students interests are not related to the course that they are taking they usually not perform well academically according to Buenaflor (2007)

Its main objective is to identify mitigation policies and measures designed to reduce negative effects of poor nutrition on children’s academic performance. Malnutrition remains one of the major obstacles to human well-being affecting all areas of a child's growth and development, including performance in the classroom. The study is grounded in Maslow’s motivational and needs theory. In this study, a qualitative phenomenological case study design was used with focus group discussions, interviews and observations as data collection instruments to twelve (12) grade seven learners, three (3) headmasters and four (4) teachers, purposively sampled in Masvingo province. Findings revealed that malnutrition affected physical growth, cognitive development and it consequently impacts on academic performance, health and survival of learners. Malnutrition also deepens poverty due to increased health care costs.
