“Good artists copy, great artists steal.” (13) This quote from Picasso elaborated on the theory that not all ideas or pieces of any art are original. All art comes from a previous idea. Artists recreate work from the past by stealing ideas and strategies others have used in art. Many artists use ideas previously used by others. For instance, take Vincent Van Gogh. Vincent, in his early years, painted dark pictures. But after, meeting earlier impressionists, he took away the way they did things in their paintings and lightened his dark pallet and started painting with short brush strokes. After that, he proceeded to use those strategies in his own paintings. Vincent was a painter, but painting wasn’t the only thing that could be recreated. The White House and the Parthenon is an example of an architectural recreation. The White House replicated the Parthenon structure. Columns and a triangle pediment are what architectural elements are taken. The columns help support the buildings frame on the White House and Parthenon. The musical industry also takes a hard hit on the replicating of the past. Jean Ritchie, born in 1950, was a singer/song writer in American Folk music. A song he wrote ‘Nottoruan Town’ was recreated by Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan took Ritchie’s song, and instead of changing the melody, he just changed the lyrics. Therefore, he stole the song. Although most artists just recreate past artists, some artists have unique techniques relevant to their time periods. For example, Andy Warhol. Warhol invented a new type of art called pop art. This type of art takes figures or objects and makes them colorful and abstract. No other artists before him has ever done that art style like Pop Art. Another example of unique art is Leonardo DaVinci. “Leonardo tried to create faithful rendissions of life.” (3) “Leonardo’s desire to paint things realistically was bold
