UNICEF EGYPT
“CHILD PROTECTION”

Child labor has recently become an unfortunate phenomenon in Egypt. It is worldwide phenomenon that denies the children from their childhood. The children are subjected to hard work and labor which is considered unsuitable for their age. The only stakeholders for this problem are the children themselves . Child labor is a complex problem in Egypt. The Egyptian Government statistics showed that around 1.6 million of the workers are underage workers aging between 5 and 17 years old. This is due to that some employees preferred to recruit these underaged children, because they are easily controled and take fewer wages. Sometimes they even receive no payment, only shelter. One could ask himself why these children accepted doing such work. The answer for this question is in three words : “not enough income” .The decresed income made families are not able to afford schools, so the parents decide the children must work in order to pay family debts, suplement family income, and help in household enterprise. Moreover, the parents think that schooling is not considered useful for their children’s future and that learning handcrafts would be much more benefitial. This problem has a huge effect on our world because the child labor does not only affect the child physically and psychologically, but also it affects the entire society directly and indirectlty. There are no various non governmental organization that aim to decrease the child labor in Egypt and UNICEF is one of the very few that deal with this problem. The united nation’s children’s fund (UNICEF) is an organization that helps improving the children’s lives and rights that was found in 1999 and now it happens to be in 191 countries. It is mainly depending on the volunteerism of governments and people willing to help the children live a better life. Just as it is supporting children in wideworld countries whom are risking child labor , It is supporting the same type of children here in Egypt in partnership with local egyptian non governmental organizations mainly in cairo and alexandria. And now the question is how this organization can aid the major problem of child labor in Egypt? Though the child labor can be handled by various methods. The UNICEF is considered to be one of the most (if not the most) effective organizations aiding children and practically improving their circustances due to many considerations such as its functionality, operational feasibility, geaographical issues, in addition to social and cultural acceptance. Child labor problem must be linked with its functionality and kept in consideration, as it is a major factor in the process of positively influencing the problem. Functionality mainly shows the ability of fixing the problem and how it can be fixed. The UNICEF aims to support the children by every possible means knowing that child labor is every child’s worst nightmare. Children facing poverty in Egypt usually end up working to improve their families conditions. Most of the cases work in different and dangerous work environments for long hours approximately ranging from 9-11 hours. Since the UNICEF knows that most of these children cannot quit working due to their masive need for earning money and helping their families, “It provides them with basic education and health care, meals, as well as cultural and recreonational activities”, works on developing their abilities, mentalities, personalities, and talents. One of the projects done by the UNICEF in West Alexandria state that “ it reached more than 2,500 working boys and that the project in 2004 is being extended to surve working girls as well”. The UNICEF provides the families aid as well by giving the working children’s mothers loans to start home based businesses thus be motivated to educate their children rather than making them work. Statistics proved how functional the UNICEF is in Egypt for its fruitful effects on people’s lives . It is guaranteed that no act of kindness is ever wasted . Since this organization is mainly based on volunteerism as mentioned before, there is no fear from the operational feasibilty. It will keep going for the people will surely be glad to participate in aiding such worthy projects. They will keep donating, volunteering, and participating, thus donations received will be spent on aiding the most needy. These projects are not only to influence the children’s lives , but also to influence the entire society as these projects aims to prevent children from working which encourages them to seek education. Every educated person has a good chance to make a better living, live a better life, develop the country by decreasing the poverty rate, improve the country’s economy, make stable family environment, and raise children in better circumstances. So it is quite obvious that organization has a sparkled future in Egypt and that it is gaining consideration and financial aid. Moreover, In order for this project to influence effeciently in Egypt, geographical issues such as picking the poorest places to establish in them the projects- must be well considered. There is no doubt that child labor is found all over Egypt, but there are places that child labor is found more often in with higher ratios. For instance the slum places in Egypt that are known to be the poorest of places are the most important to be put in consideration and to make projects in. Geographic consideration is to be put in consideration as it is a major effective factor. In addition to the elements mentioned above, social and cultural consideration must be in favor of forming the projects that support invading child labor or decreasing it by every possible way. Since in Egypt people usually love helping eachothers, the social and cultural consideration here will not be a problem, versing that thankfully it is from the supporting factors for the continuation of these projects. Child labor which is one of the major problems in Egypt is proved to be solved if certain criterion is followed. “The process of fighting the child labor has been a participatory one involving all those concerned with the issue in the egyptian cotext including the UNICEF ”. Outer factors such as awarness campaigns can be a supporting factor for increasing the organizations and projects effects. Thus awareness must be shared in every single region in Egypt about the importance of education and its impact on the society , and how the child labor affects the child physically and psychologically causing instability within that causes the entire society’s instability.

...denying the immense popularity of Facebook and Twitter. In July, many websites reported that basketball player Lebron James began a Twitter account just days before he announced his free agency destination. He drew 150,000 followers in 7 hours. Not to be outdone, pop sensation Lady Gaga became the first person on Facebook to reach 10 million fans. Cultural Analysis

...Cultural Analysis Within the past decade, social media has gained worldwide popularity and has become a platform for every day communication. Users are beginning to use social media to fulfil many basic psychological needs in terms of making connections with others and finding a personal identity. The question is: How is social media affecting the way we communicate? How have critics and academics in our culture responded to the upsurge in social media? As social media continues to grow, so does the amount of research on the topic. A study on communication in social networks was conducted in 2013 by Megan Sponcil and Priscilla Gitimu in which 96 Midwestern university students answered a questionnaire inquiring about their social media usage. Questions in the “survey included the following areas: demographics, extent of usage of social media, effect on communication, and attitudes of self” (Journal of Technology 13). Studies show that those who use social media communicate with family and friends more often than those who do not (Journal of Technology 13). Social networking sites provide a channel for easy communication with all networks of friends within one medium. The authors make an unstated claim that although the communication may not be meaningful, social media allows users to stay connected to those they care about. Users of these sites have also been discovered to have a stronger sense of self concept with a .651 Pearson correlation between media use and sense of...

Trust and Social Networks

...Is it feasible to be able to trust everyone in a network of millions of people that you may be associated with? Many are evidently signing up to social networking sites and, as such, revealing much information about themselves. Does trust play a role in the use of social networking sites? Discuss and contrast. It could be said that online social privacy is harder to guarantee, so should one consider a higher level of concern for internet privacy and do you believe a lack of trust affects the popularity of social networking sites? According to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s dictionary, trust is defined as [1]: “the belief that somebody or something is good, sincere, honest, etc. and will not try to harm or trick you.” If this definition is adopted - as this essay will clearly show - it is clearly not feasible to trust everyone in a network of millions of people one might have contact with. Trust has always played a crucial role in determining the depth of human relationships. This is valid even more now that social networking tools enable people to connect with others in ways that were not possible before their invention. As a consequence, the essay will show that a lack of trust can seriously affect the popularity of such tools. A social network based on the Internet technology can be conceived as a social structure composed of individuals connected by some type of mutual interests. Technology developments brought major breakthroughs like the elimination of barriers of space...

The popularity of using online social networks as a mean of communication has spread very quickly among the online users. It has almost become a daily activity in many people’s life. This phenomenon sparks much debate about the adverse effects of social networking. Facebook has good things and bad thing about it that need to be heard. The first and perhaps most disturbing problem would be a rapid growth in radical and hate groups. Cyber criminals love the popularity they receive on Facebook. In support of the above fact, a researcher claims that the number of hate groups on social networks rose by 20 percent last year (Reuters, 2010). Examples of anti-social groups on Facebook include “National Kick a Ginger Day” and “I Love Curry Bashing” (Reuters, 2010). In the case of the first group, the idea of establishing a National Kick a Ginger Day group was derived from a group of people who do not favor children with fair skin and red hair (National Kick a Ginger Day, 2008). The other site, I Love Curry Bashing, was formed by a racist group who are against Indians. Clearly, both social groups create a problem of discrimination. This causes conflicts...

Potential for Musical Social Media

...The Psychological Magnetism of the Social Network Chelsea Fries Psychology of Social Media Stanford University The success of a business such as MySpace is dependent upon how effectively it is able to bring pleasure to people. One of the best ways to do this is to present people with a community which they would like to belong to. In order to build a successful community, each individual must be given the tools necessary to find people with whom they share common interests. When one has successfully found or created a community, one will choose to devote a great deal of time to wherever their community is, especially if spending time with that community brings them popularity. People enjoy spending time in a place where they feel liked and like the people they are with, and in such a setting are willing to use resources to maintain their status. When people have a sense of acceptance within their community they will feel free to express themselves and show others who they are and what they like. One’s sense of community is largely dependent upon how freely one feels able to be themselves, but people are often forced to censor themselves in order to gain the acceptance of a group of people. For example, if an individual already belongs to the “popular group” at school but deviates from the group’s norm concerning their taste in music, that individual’s reputation could utterly deteriorate if others came to know the type of music that they truly enjoyed listening to. People...

Affirmation from Social Networks

...Affirmation from Social Networks How many of us have had a meal with someone you haven’t seen in forever and, as you are talking, your friend keeps checking their phone? I am going to say that many of us have been in this scenario and that, for most of us, it was pretty frustrating. On the other hand, what if you have been that friend? What are your motivations for constantly posting a selfie or refreshing your news feed or letting the world know where you are by checking in? I think that part of your reasoning might be that you are looking for affirmation. I propose that we have an addiction to affirmation and that society has a problem with getting their affirmation from social networks. People have been receiving affirmation for years. It can be and is what makes some people feel special. What is affirmation? Google defines it as emotional support or encouragement. Merriam Webster defines it as a positive assertion which is to say something that is true in a confident way. I think everyone in some form or fashion is looking for affirmation. Individuals in society have been seeking and receiving affirmation for years. If you are feeling depressed or just down your spirit can be lifted by words of affirmation that others have sent you. Many use social networks to receive their words of affirmation. The term social networks covers a lot. It includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and so many more. Facebook was founded on February 4, 2004 and was first...
