Video 1.07 Ports and Connectors

In this chapter, I learned about serial, parallel, SCSI, USB, sound, and FireWire ports and some of their corresponding devices. I also learned that USB has become the dominate port replacing the PS/2 mouse and keyboard, serial and parallel ports on recent systems. Below are some of the topics presented.

Serial, Parallel, Game Ports

* Serial ports are male with 9 or 25-pins * Parallel ports are female and have 25-pins * Game ports are also female and have 15pins with two rows

Older mice used serial connectors and older keyboards used 5-pin DIN connectors. The more modern connectors is the PS/2 pin or the USB or wireless.

Network Interface Card

* Is responsible for converting parallel communications to serial * It uses the RJ-45 connector

Modem

* This is the slowest connection to the Internet which uses the phone line * Transfers 56 Kbps * V.92 is a faster technology but still slower that NIC * They convert analog into digital and then converts from digital into analog * Uses RJ-11 connectors

Video

* VGA- analog interface D-type, 15-pins, 3 rows * DVI- Digital Visual Interface * S-Video round with 4 or 7 pins, used to connect to the TV

USB

* Universal Serial Bus that is hot swappable * USB1 transmits at 12 Mbps 3 meters in length * USB2 transmits at 480 Mbps 5 meters in length

USB come with two sizes of connectors A and B. The A connector is the larger and the B is the smaller connector which connects to a device.

SCSI

Comes in a variety of sizes but the most common is the Narrow 50-pin Type A and the Wide SCSI 68-pin Type P

IEEE 1394

Is also known as FireWire, uses serial connection and is hot swappable. For its fast transition it is used for streaming media and is expected to replace SCSI.

* Microphones * Earphones * Speaker

Video: 1.09 Video

This video is explaining the two types of video monitors for a computer which is the CRT and the LCD monitor. They explain how each monitor projects colors and resolution types. Video cards are used to show an imagine and resolution using the AGP or PCI slots on the motherboard. They demonstrate how to go to your setting from the desktop and modify the setting for the CRT or LCD. Finally, the video explains some of the trouble shooting you may encounter.

CRT and LCD

* CRT, cathode ray tube, are analog display devices that can display an unlimited range of colors and uses the 15-pin VGA connector. * LCD, liquid crystal display use liquid crystal cells to polarize light passing through the display to create the image shown on the monitor. An LCD has only one native resolution and must scale lower resolutions to fit the panel depending on the configuration in the video card driver.

DVI or VGA

Video Cards

* Buy reputable brand even though maybe expensive but better quality and performance. * Check bus speeds, faster is better

Dot Matrix-

Inkjet-

* Thermal bubble (Type1) uses heat to force ink through nozzle * Piezoelectric technology (Type 2) uses electrical charge to force ink through nozzle * Requires special paper with wax coating * CYMB- four color coding Cyan Yellow, Magenta, and Black Laser-

* Electro photographic * Six steps in the laser printer process * Cleaning- cleans toner from drum and leaves drum with neutral charge * Conditioning- applies 600 volts to drum * Writing- laser “writes” image to drum image is 100 volts * Developing- toner is transferred to the image * Transferring- toner is transferred to positively charged paper * Fusing- rollers apply heat and pressure to melt toner onto page * Expensive to replace toner cartridges

Problems with laser Printers

* Totally white page- paper is not retaining a strong positive charge * Totally black page- drum is not retaining a strong negative charge * Streaking on the page- probably low toner * Flakey or brittle print on page- fuser is not hot enough or fuser is not applying enough pressure * Garbled text- incorrect driver

NIC (Network Interface Card) converts parallel communication to serial and uses an RJ-45 connector. A Modem connects to the phone line but is the slowest way to connect to the internet. It has a transfer speed of 56kbps but V.92 is quicker and it converts analog into digital. The Modem uses a RJ-11 connector.
