Book Review

The Postmortal starts off by explaining that a collection of material was found in rubble after the Great Correction took place. The material that was found were just pages written by lawyer, John Ferrell. The pages consisted of what life was like during 2029 to 2079. To get further into The Postmortal, the story focuses on a man by the name of John Ferrell who before it was legal went and got a cure that made his body freeze from aging. This cure did not stop him from dying, he just wouldn’t die of old age.
The cure was created by Graham Otto. Because the cure had not fully been tested and Otto found out it had been offered to the black market he immediately back the presidents ban on this cure. Well doing that made it more popular to have and many people found a way to get it done. John Ferrell was referred to this Dr. who goes by Dr. X. John went to meet him and receive the cure. Once he reached the apartment the Dr. explained exactly how the cure worked and what do expect when receiving it. After hearing it all John made the decision to get the cure and two weeks later he fully had the cure. John was reluctant to tell anyone but his roommate Katy always has a way to get stuff out of him. Him and Katy were roommates and great friends, so he shared with her that he got the cure for $7000. After he explained all that he knows about the cure, Katy decided that she wanted the cure. John took her to get the cure once arriving there he got distracted by a woman with blonde hair and told Katy he would meet her after. Katy was on her way up to the Dr. but the building blew up and she died. The building had been targeted by terrorist who opposed the cure. John then decided to tell his dad and sister that he received the cure and neither of them were too thrilled by it. As the story goes on John is told by his boss that he needed to re-specialize in divorce law because people were living a lot longer, so they came up with cycle marriages. In the midst of the book John was involved with a women name Sonia they dated for a while and she became pregnant. After finding out John wasn’t ready to marry her she left him and the two agreed to raise the child separate. After that John runs into Allison, a girl he went to school with, they were together for a little bit but unfortunately she was hit by a care and died instantly. It is also learned that the blonde women from earlier was spotted at other buildings that had been targeted. Which leads to John really wanting to find her. As the story goes on the president lifts the ban the cure and everybody was going out and getting it. Lifting the ban lead to major problems. Shortage of living space, food began to be more expensive and those that had the cure were not eligible for social security or health benefits. Other countries then started to conserve their resources. Russia had become more aggressive and China made everyone get their birthdays branded onto their arms. Later, Sonia we learned has remarried and gives birth to her and Johns son David. At first John was there to take care of him but decided he was ready to see the world so for many, many years he never had face to face contact with his son. John reconnected with his son again and found out David is a part of Church oh Man group and that he is well respected. Further in the book we find out that David, his mother, and stepfather later die after getting bombed in a church. We learn that Johns father took the cure but only a few months later he got cancer and died. Johns sister Polly, got the cure and has a bunch of kids and has been married numerous times and regrets the cure. Meanwhile there were shortages of water, gas, and food in many of the countries, Homelessness was increasing. Coming back John decided he didn’t want to be a lawyer, so a friend presented a job called an end specialist. This job meant people who had taken the cure and no longer wanted to live and could literally purchase their death. It wasn’t an ideal job but after a while John was okay and viewed as a way to help people. John was promoted to the same rank as Ernie, which allows him to end someone’s life. He then later could no longer do his job after he found out his special extended to elderly. After years had gone by john finally spotted the woman with the blonde hair again and found that she was the lookout for those targeted buildings because she was afraid for her life, her name was Solara Beck. John had fell for her and the two moved in together and then eventually moved and left town. John confessed his feelings for her and wanted to marry her cure or no cure and with her being pregnant. In the world, the world was going down. China was nuking its people just to stop overcrowding. Diseases arose, and Some new medical called the Skeleton Key which people went out and got even though it still needs work. As John and Solara were trying to get out they were about to be attacked by soldiers until a nuke went off. Some time goes by and john and Solara are taking cover and seek help from the Church of Man. Because John’s son David was well respected there, the pastor took John and Solara in. Unfortunately, on their way John was stabbed and Solara was shot. They both still managed to make it to the place they were supposed to go. Once making it inside a doctor came to assist with them but before that happened John had the reverend marry him and Solara. The doctor then took her away and helped her, while there was no hope for John because of his crimes against humanity. He didn’t care as long as Solara and her child would be okay. John laid there with one shot of SoFlo ready for himself and realized his immortality was over.
Human service related issues would have to be that there was homeless people, there was starvation from the lack of food, there was poverty, there was no longer benefits for people to obtain, there was no public safety. Throughout the book the Church of Men were helping people except when it came time to help John at the end. They didn’t help him because they felt he didn’t deserve the help. John was not affect much by the homelessness or any of that. In some not ideal way John helped people. He helped by even though it was essentially killing people, but It’s what they wanted and he helped them get that.
I think if I were to be introduce in the story, I think I would enter right after his son was born. Once John started deciding he wanted to see the world I would remind him that he had a child and that was more important. That missing out on your child grow up and knowing you is not worth it. Having the cure give him more time to live so why not enjoy your child and then go on to what it is you want. I would tell him to speak to professional help just to have an unbiased person. I think with all that has happened I think if he stayed with his family. I think his life would have been a lot different had it worked out that way. I don’t think he would have ended up being an end specialist. I think he would have had a different view on life had it spent it with his child.

An Examination of Conscience

...He who blushes to discover his sins to a man, and who will not confess, shall be covered with shame on the Day of Judgment in the presence of the whole universe." (St. John Chrysostom, Treatise on Priests, Bk. 3)         Prayer before Confession: O Lord, grant me light to see myself as Thou dost see me, and the grace to be truly and effectively sorry for my sins. O Mary, help me to make a good confession.         How to Confess: First examine your conscience well, then tell the priest the specific kind of sins you have committed and, to the best of your ability, how many times you have committed them since your last good confession. You are obliged to confess only mortal sins, since you can obtain forgiveness for your venial sins by sacrifices and acts of charity. If you are in doubt about whether a sin is mortal or venial, mention your doubt to the confessor....

Tourism

...Arevalo, Alonica Michelle M. Assignment: 1.) Explain sin and its kinds especially social/structural. * Sin was like a crime, a transgression of the law. It was akin to breaking the speed limit on the highway. The law is what made an action sinful. Where there was no clear-cut law (no speed limit), there was no question of sin (go as fast as you want). Another face of sin is personal sin. Our traditional way of distinguishing the degrees of gravity of personal sins is to call them mortal and venial sins Mortal sin. Mortal sin is a serious break in a relationship of love with God, neighbor, world and self.  We can think of it as a radical No to God and to others. It happens when we refuse to live in a positive, life-giving way.  Mortal sin involves a moral evil done by a person who is supremely selfish and committed to making evil and not goodness the characteristic mark of his or her life. Venial sin. Venial sins can weigh us down with the anchor of bad habits. Venial sin often enters our lives when we fail to show care for others. People can easily become submerged in self-interest. Perhaps we speak sharply to another, revel in our piece of gossip or exercise a power play over another that keeps us secure and in control.  2.) Discuss the social dimensions of sin. Social sin has been around as long as civilization, but it is a relatively new concept for Catholics. We have tended to focus exclusively on personal (actual) sin: lying, cheating, missing Mass. Lady Macbeth

...Macbeth: Lady MacBeth Lady MacBeth is one of Shakespeare's greatest and most intriguing female characters. She is evil, seductive, and witch-like all at the same time. However, during the play we see her in two different ways. At the time when we first meet her, she is a brutally violent, power wanting witch, and later on she turns to a shameful suicidal grieving woman. At the beginning of the MacBeth, Lady MacBeth is very savage and vicious. She thinks nothing of killing King Duncan. She has no sense of what is wrong and right, and believes that it is perfectly moral to do the deed of murder. She states that to not go through with the deed would be horrible to yourself, and that you would be a coward in your own eyes. "Wouldst thou have that which thou esteem'st the ornament of life, and live a coward in thine own esteem," She states that if she was MacBeth and did not jump at this perfect opportunity, that if a child, being fed at her breast, where as Duncan is, king, she would tear it from her and "dash'd the brains out" to have the opportunity MacBeth does. This shows how mad and sadistic she was. She had absolutely no self- conscience, and thought nothing about the wrong they were soon to commit. Later on, after the murders, she, unlike MacBeth, still shows no signs of a conscience. She is very cool and collected, while MacBeth hallucinates...

The Mortal Instruments Trilogy Review

...THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS TRILOGY BOOK REVIEW SHADOWHUNTERS. The word that really caught my attention while walking down the hall of our local bookstore. The Mortal Instruments Trilogy is a young adult paranormal romance/urban fantasy, set in a colorful version of our reality where humans walk unaware of not just the vampires, werewolves, fey and warlocks, but also demons and their part-human enemies – the Shadowhunters. The author Judith Rumelt better known by her penname Cassandra Clare is a bestselling American author of young adult fiction. The books are inspired by the urban landscape of Manhattan, Cassandra’s favorite city. As I progress through, I found that the books are fast flowing with vivid characters, a lot of action, and interesting twists. The City of Bones, the first book of the trilogy, tells us about a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray, who live in New York City, discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a race of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother, Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures. As I read through the book I found each and every character such charming personalities, as if they where real. I become aware of there presence and starts to worry. The words used by Cassandra...

Theology

...REFLECTION PAPER IN THEOLOGY 12: MAN AND MORALITY SUBMITTED BY: CALIMAG, MARRIELL B. AAT-2A SUBMITTED TO: SIR ANTHONY MERENCIANO Moral theology is a term used by the Roman Catholic Church to describe the study of God from a perspective of how man must live in order to attain the presence or favour of God. While dogmatic theology deals with the teaching or official doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church, moral theology deals with the goal of life and how it is achieved. So, the goal or purpose of moral theology is, simply stated, to determine how man should live. Moral theology examines such things as freedom, conscience, love, responsibility, and law. Moral theology seeks to set forth general principles to help individuals make the right decisions and deal with the details of everyday living in a way that is in accordance with the Church’s dogmatic theology. Moral theology is essentially the Roman Catholic equivalent to what Protestants usually refer to as Christian Ethics. Moral theology deals with the broad questions in life and attempts to define what it means to live as a Roman Catholic Christian. Moral theology addresses the different methods of moral discernment, the definitions of right and wrong, good and evil, sin and virtue, etc. Morality is the differentiation of intentions, decisions, and actions between those that are "good" (or right) and those that are "bad" (or wrong). It is based on human existence that refers to human experience. Human existence...

Imagery and Symbolism in Brighton Rock

...AO1: Articulate creative, informed and relevant responses to literary texts, using appropriate terminology and concepts and coherent, accurate written expression. AO2: Demonstrate detailed critical understanding in analysing the ways in which structure, form and language shape meanings in literary texts. ‘The effective use of imagery and symbolism is at the heart of the novel’s success’ Greene uses an extensive amount of imagery and symbolism to conjure an intricate understanding of the characters and plots within the novel. Imagery and symbolism is used throughout the novel to create contrast between characters or settings. For example Greene uses it to demonstrate Pinkie’s superiority in comparison to Rose’s meek inferiority, to highlight the class difference between Pinkie and Colleoni and to define characters as good or evil. Pinkie’s dominance and control over Rose stems from the first night on which they meet up. The vitriol bottle is a symbol of fear and destruction as Pinkie shows it to Rose in an attempt to scare her to stay quiet. Although he then lies that it isn’t really vitriol, she still becomes obedient towards him as she is in awe of his knowledge ‘”you know an awful lot about things, Pinkie,” she said with horror and admiration’. Her wonderment with Pinkie foreshadows the lengths she will go for him. Pinkie is brutal, venomous and destructive much like the bottle of vitriol. Pinkie is presented as emotionless however he feels ‘sensual pleasure’ whilst...

Ethics & Credibility in Business Communication

...Ethics of Facebook Study Questioned COM/295 July 16, 2015 Ethics of Facebook Study Questioned I have chosen a recent newsworthy that talks about a study being questioned on ethics of Facebook in San Francisco. The company conducted an experiment using users’ posts in a manipulated way. They gathered news feed posts from users and reposted them as a positive post to one group and a negative post to another group. The purpose of doing that was to see how it affect others responses. The company posted a blog stating how sorry they were on how the paper was described and may have caused any anxiety to others. According to Abc7 News (2015), "I don't think there's any way to overstate this -- you just simply do not play with people's emotions without asking their permission first," said consumer psychologist Kit Yarrow (6). I believe there should have been a better way of doing this research for the sake of all people and their feelings. Facebook’s ethical obligation in their communications to the general public is to be truthful, respect privacy, deception and the right to be informed. Facebook gives individuals the power to share as part of their mission to make connections with others. However, Facebook has not yet responded to the general public nor the researchers due to allegations being made. There is a policy that states how information is collected and how it is used and shared. Due to the way ethics of Facebook...
