For centuries i've been killing people, for my own personal satisfaction, most of my own kind were killing only to feed themselves...i was using it as a sport, loved to hunt living beings,to feel their last warm breath,to gaze in their watery eyes, begging me for mercy, the heart pounding filled with fear... i was feeding on their sorrow,on their pain...their pain was my pleasure... i was hated and that gave me strenght.I was the most fearful predator of the night,i was a vampire...don't know how long ago it happened,i forgot to count the years,i remember i was 25,returning from a club situated near Boca Do Inferno(Hell's mouth),Portugal,i was pretty much trashed, not carring that the streets were empty and i was walking by my self at 3 AM...when something attacked me,sucked my blood and left me there to die...next day i wasn't the same,my skin was cold as ice, couldn't feel my pulse, but had this inhumane strenght which was exciting for me at first...now is a part of me,of who I am. I'm walking on the empty streets of Chicago, hiding from the light, the shadows being my camouflage looking for a victim, not hungry, just bored.Don't know for how long i walked, deep lost in my thoughts, when the warm breeze of the Lake Michigan hit my face waking me up from my reverie.Long before i heard steps, I sniffed the presence of a hot blooded prey. The thought of being close to my next victim put a devilish smile on my face, i let my self carried away by my senses, floating like the wind.It was a man, waking in front of me,not worrying of what's about to come upon him,i have to say,i was respecting his bravery,it reminded me of my self...how i was long time ago...but that got me killed...well at leastmy human life ended... I was following him,not making a sound, walking carefully like a panther chasing its prey, smelling his perfume, hearing his heart beat,i could taste his blood already, sweet and warm filling my mouth with it,small warm drips trickling down my neck...he vanished! I was left stuned in the middle of the street, never happened something like this to me,to loose a human,i was in shock when something grabbed me from behind, lifted me up,turned me,holding my neck with a strong grip.It was the man i was chasing not even a minute ago, looking deep into my eyes, piercing my soul with his dark sight. "Who are you and what do you want from me?" his voice thundered "Apparently i'm someone who shouldn't mess with you" i heard my voice hissing thorugh my exposed fangs. He smiled at the sight of my weakness, his grip lost in strenght and unexpectedly he kissed me. A deep, passionate kiss,i felt lost in his warm embrace, his heat piercing my cold soul, making my heart beat once again, feeling my dead blood rushing trough my veins one more time... i was under his spell completely, powerless, feeling weak inside for the first time in centuries...I have met my match...i was thinking whyle he dissapeared in the darkness of the night...I watched amazed how he spread his long black wings and flew away... "We will meet again,my love...soon"the wind blew softly in my ears, the promise of a new begining... Ramona H

Tawny Owls

...brown, gray and darkish red. They have big black eyes. The Tawny Owl also has a small pointy nose and small curved claws. The claws are blackish with dirty white bases. The owl’s habitat usually varies. They like to live in mostly wooded and forest-like areas like cemeteries and parks. The Tawny Owls almost always breed in woodlands and forests. They like to inhabit coniferous forest. The Tawny Owls are always hunting at night. They are usually quiet listening, waiting and watching for their prey. When the owls spot the animal, it swoops down, covers the prey and instantly kills it. The animals they eat are rabbits, mice, voles, earthworms, insects, beetles, birds, frogs, fish, lizards and molluses. Since the Tawny Owl is relatively a small bird, it has a number of predators. Those predators are usually dogs, cats, and foxes. But it also includes hawks, eagles, and other large birds. As far as the Tawny Owl eggs, the main predators are squirrels and rats. In conclusion, the Tawny Owl can be known as a small owl. It hunts at night. They have predators but also a long list of prey. They are very meticulous while hunting. In fact they rely on their sight and hearing to kill their prey. Bibliography Lewis, Deane. The Owl Pages. 22 July 2013. <http://www.owlpages.com/>. Loss of Top Predators Is Humankind’s Most Pervasive Influence on Nature

...Loss of Top Predators is Humankind’s Most Pervasive Influence on Nature Thesis: For thousands of years, nature and humans have coexisted in equilibrium. As human population increases and expands, it cases severe effects in every ecosystem. Evidence of human growth and urbanization can be seen through the impacts on virtually every ecosystem in planet earth, marine and terrestrial. Effects of, such as species decline, endangerment and extinction of enormous proportions. In most cases, driving some species to the edge of extinction. Possibly no species are more affected than the world’s large top predators. These animals are extremely important to the overall health and function of an ecosystem, but conservation and restoration of them and their habitat is a remote thought on humans. The absence of predators in certain areas has led to an explosion of their natural prey, which leads to a damaging impact on their habitat. Ecosystems need to be healthy in order to maintain the health of all living things within and around them, including humans. It seems logical then to restore the natural balance by reintroducing the animal’s natural predator, conserving the population, and protecting the wild environment. Humans can no longer wait to address this growing environmental and ethical issue, and by establishing clear goals they can ensure the future of these species and ecosystems along with the continuing growth and success of their own. Small Creastures of the Night

...Small Creatures of the Night Imagine for a minute, you’re walking through the forest at night on the eastern fronts of Australia. As you’re walking you catch a glimpse of something that seems to be flying overhead. Naturally, your first thought would be, it must be a bird or maybe even a bat. Just as you think this you catch another glimpse, but this time you can see that it doesn’t appear to be flapping any wings, and looks almost square in shape. What is this thing? Where did it come from? Is it going to hurt me? These creatures of the night resemble flying squirrels and are better known as Sugar Gliders. These creatures of the night are also becoming more noticeable in homes across the United States as cute pets. Most people have never heard of a Sugar Glider before and didn’t even know you can keep them as pets. So, what is a Sugar Glider? And how do you take care of one? The scientific name of a Sugar Glider is Petaurus breviceps; which, if broken down into it Latin roots, means Short-headed Rope-Dancer. They get their name Sugar Glider from two different aspects of their life. They love to eat sweet foods, such as: fruits, nectars, and saps, which hint at the first part of their name Sugar. The second part is probably even easier to see and understand, Glider because they’re very agile and acrobatic in the air. The can spread they’re arms and legs to produce a very thin skin membrane called Patagia. Their patagium, when fully spread, allows them to glide upwards of...

Light Pollution

...country. The major world cities are densely populated, and also contain towering skyscrapers. People living in these cities who venture outdoors in the evening can almost feel blinded by the intrusive outdoor lighting. One of the major cities in the world that has been affected the most by light pollution is Hong Kong, where the night skies are more than 1000 times brighter than the acceptable global levels. In order to fight the rising problem of light pollution, there is need for governments, businesses and individuals to join hands to ensure that the effects are mitigated. This paper discusses the effect of light pollution on wildlife and human beings, and provides solutions to the problem. Background Light pollution can be defined as any light that shines outdoors and has an effect on natural landscapes and/or living things (Jacobson, 2012). In modern cities, for example, lights from buildings and streets illuminate the night skies causing most stars to seem invisible. These effects can be noticed both in the urban center, as well as for several miles outside of that center. Mizon (2012) points out that when you view satellites at night, you may be able to see this kind of pollution as a glowing region around urban centres. When light creates a glow that can in any way interfere with the natural environment, we can also refer to it as light pollution. Light pollution is comprised of four components that may be overlapping, but in...

...media. Since the internet is filled with computer hackers, scams, and sexual predators the disadvantages of social media can outweigh the advantages of social media at times. However the disadvantages of social media have not stopped social media networks from taking over the internet. Having the ability to do anything you can imagine from a social network for your business use or personal life has come to life. Using social media to find lost, old friends or family members was the main idea of social media networks when it first hit the internet scene. Then the genius behind the scenes explored different options to open up the door for more benefits of social media, like advertising a business, internet dating, job searching, night life, or even to receive news before it airs live on television networks. The internet has always been a dangerous thing to use even in the early 90’s some websites posted messages to use their website with caution, but with the evolution of social media it makes it hard for any website to protect their users. From computer hackers, sexual predators, and con artist make hard to trust anything on the internet or social media. Computer hackers love social media users who like to pay bills online, or benefit from using any type of online banking because they hack into their bank accounts and steal their identity to order credit cards, cars, or even houses. This can provide benefits to farmers, ranchers and urban dwellers because they usually have a big rodent problem in their fields. It contributes to the economy by the legal and regulated trapping and trafficking its fur in some areas of Australia. Thankfully, this has lessened in the past few years. (Jean Bartels, 2002) Also, as I stated before in the biology section, we need foxes to help balance the ecosystem. Without them the energy flow will be thrown out of order and the ecosystem will become disordered. As well as that, we need them to increase the biodiversity. Arguments...

Sex Offender

...have been something he has witness or even went through as a child. One thing for sure is we know he has a problem with society A sex offender (also sexual offender, sex abuser, or sexual abuser) is a person who committed a sex crime, although what constitutes a sex crime differs by culture and by legal jurisdiction. In most jurisdictions, offenses include child sexual abuse, downloading child pornography, rape, and statutory rape. In much of the United States, public urination, mooning, streaking, and the failure to prevent one's own teenage children from engaging in otherwise consensual sexual activity also, result being designated as a sex offender, requiring registration as such in publicly available, online lists. The term sexual predator is often used to describe severe or repeat sex offenders. Rape is a crime of violence in which sex is the weapon. Among violent sexual offenders, often the only logic to their crimes is internal to the criminal; they alone know why they committed their crimes. The sexual component of a crime is not always self-evident. The behavior may be blatant, or it may be so subtle that it escapes detection. Then again,...

Nature Observation ~ Pond and Surrounding Woods, West Pointe, Ca

...Lisa C. Litz Ramona Brockman Environmental Science February 18, 2014 Benchmark Part 1 Nature Observation ~ Pond and Surrounding Woods, West Pointe, CA Our favorite place for taking nature walks is in the woods surrounding my parent’s cabin in West Pointe, Ca. My daughter and I have been taking walks in the woods up there for over six years. We have seen a variety of different animals up there on our various outings depending on the time of year we’re up there and the time of day we take our walks. All of the plants and animals we’ve seen up there make up the biotic factors for this environment. There are a number of different species of trees and flowering plants around my parent’s cabin and the outlying trails we go exploring on. Even though there are a number of cabins up here, they haven’t really disturbed the environment to the point that it’s affected the number of different creatures that still wander through the woods. Besides all of the wonderful biotic factors we so enjoy up here there are also a few abiotic factors that interact with the wildlife. There is a slow running stream that runs between a few of the cabins, and then a couple of miles down the road there’s a large standing pond just off to the side of the road. The main abiotic factor is the sun, which is where all the living organisms derive their energy from. Energy is another abiotic factor. The plants derive energy directly from the sun, whereas the animals get their energy indirectly from the sun by...

...small bear than other mustelids. The wolverine, a solitary animal, has a reputation for ferocity and strength out of proportion to its size, with the documented ability to kill prey many times larger than itself. The wolverine is a powerful and versatile predator and scavenger. Prey mainly consists of small to medium-sized mammals, but the wolverine has been recorded killing prey such as adult deer. Wolverine meaning as a spiritual animal consists of power. These are incredibly muscular creatures, and all that power is stored in their small bodies. These mammals can spring into ferocious action in an instant. Every single wolverine is different from one another, but each wolverine allows us to see power in a new form. Most other small carnivores will not attack larger prey that is bigger than themselves, but not the wolverine. The wolverine spirit pushes us humans to reach a higher and fuller potential. When things get tough the wolverine tells us to rise above and to overcome it with power. Wolverines have a keen sense of smell; they can smell prey twenty feet under the snow. They will dig down into burrows and kill hibernating animals. Wolverines are sneaky when finding food, too. They are sneaky because they hunt at night and do not make a lot of noise when they move through the snow. Wolverines have strong jaws and teeth, and can crush a carcass and munch right through the bone....

Parrot In The Poisonwood Bible

...The Poisonwood Bible contained several symbols, but perhaps the biggest symbol is a parrot left to the Price family by Brother Fowles, Kilanga's previous missionary. This parrot, Methuselah, who seemed to just be a pet in the story, ends up being a major symbol for the Republic of Congo, both of whom had been kept "caged" and had little control over themselves. In the book, the parrot causes some trouble amongst the Price family by mimicking profanity expressed by Orleanna. After Methuselah repeated some more profane language, Nathan decided it would be best to set the parrot free. This troublesome behavior can be compared to the actions of the citizens of the Congo trying to gain freedom from their owners, the Belgians. When the Price family...
