Princess Victoria was only 18 years old when she became Queen of England in 1837. She succeeded her uncle, William the 4th. to the throne of England. All ready as a young girl she had to give up on living a normal life and instead become the queen and even an empress. Her husband, Prince Albert, whom she married in 1840, gave her fine support in her troubled work.
Albert was German and in the beginning of their marriage, he had to fight against the English prejudices towards everything German. It might be said that the English population did not properly appreciate him until his death in an age of only 42 years. He was an excellent teacher for the young queen, a talented politician and a great art lover. Victoria admired him, trusted him and loved him very much, and after his death she mourned the loss of >>her Albert<< for the rest of her life. From then on she could only trust herself, and she was to rule for another 40 years until her death in 1901.
Her long reign, also called The Victorian era, is known for its view on the behaviour of women and children. Women were not allowed into pubs. Women were not allowed on the street without a hat on. Legs and ankles must not be shown. Women were presumed not to have legs. Even pianos had their legs hidden by draperies. Children were to be seen, not heard. They weren’t allowed to talk at the table, unless they were asked. Victorian “educative” books gave examples of horrible punishments for children, who, like little John, was hung on a meat hook, when he was stealing jam from the larder.

Weir Allison

...A STUDY OF FULVIA by Allison Jean Weir A thesis submitted to the Department of Classics In conformity with the requirements for The degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada December 2007 copyright © Allison Jean Weir 2007 Abstract Who was Fulvia? Was she the politically aggressive and dominating wife of Mark Antony as Cicero and Plutarch describe her? Or was she a loyal mother and wife, as Asconius and Appian suggest? These contrasting accounts in the ancient sources warrant further investigation. This thesis seeks to explore the nature of Fulvia’s role in history to the extent that the evidence permits. Fulvia is most famous for her activities during Antony’s consulship (44 BC) and his brother Lucius Antonius’ struggle against C. Octavian in the Perusine War (41-40 BC). But there is a discrepancy among the authors as to what extent she was actually involved. Cicero, Octavian and Antony, who were all key players in events, provide their own particular versions of what occurred. Later authors, such as Appian and Dio, may have been influenced by these earlier, hostile accounts of Fulvia. This is the first study in English to make use of all the available evidence, both literary and material, pertaining to Fulvia. Modern scholarship has a tendency to concentrate almost exclusively on events towards the end of Fulvia’s life, in particular the Perusine War, about which the evidence is much more abundant in later sources such as Appian and...

...Praise for The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down “Fadiman describes with extraordinary skill the colliding worlds of Western medicine and Hmong culture.” —The New Yorker “This fine book recounts a poignant tragedy…It has no heroes or villains, but it has an abundance of innocent suffering, and it most certainly does have a moral…[A] sad, excellent book.” —Melvin Konner, The New York Times Book Review “An intriguing, spirit-lifting, extraordinary exploration of two cultures in uneasy coexistence…A wonderful aspect of Fadiman’s book is her even-handed, detailed presentation of these disparate cultures and divergent views—not with cool, dispassionate fairness but rather with a warm, involved interest that sees and embraces both sides of each issue…Superb, informal cultural anthropology—eye-opening, readable, utterly engaging.” —Carole Horn, The Washington Post Book World “This is a book that should be deeply disturbing to anyone who has given so much as a moment’s thought to the state of American medicine. But it is much more…People are presented as [Fadiman] saw them, in their humility and their frailty—and their nobility.” —Sherwin B. Nuland, The New Republic 3/462 “Anne Fadiman’s phenomenal first book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, brings to life the enduring power of parental love in an impoverished refugee family struggling to protect their seriously ill infant daughter and ancient spiritual traditions from the tyranny of welfare bureaucrats and intolerant...
